Gender discrimination and institutional frameworks: Evidence from four european union countries

This paper reviews important aspects of gender labour market inequalities in four European Union countries. It shows that individual countries differ in many aspects of gender discrimination. It seems that contributing factors to these differences are the national social and economic structures, the level of economic development, the legislative framework and the effectiveness of anti-discriminatory policies. It also shows that there are notable improvements in many gender gap indicators during the recent years and, at least part of the improvement should be attributed to the European commission's legislative and policy initiatives

CURRENT ACTIVITY IN THE THERMAIKOS GULF CONTINENTAL MARGIN , IN RELAÏJON TO MODERN SEDIMENTATION PROCESSES

The area under investigation represents the NW continental margin of the Aegean Sea i.e. the Thermaikos Gulf and the associated NW Sporades Basin. Surficial seabed sediments are of terrigenous origin whilst in terms of grain size, offshore sediments maybe distinguished into silty sediments that cover the northern and western part of the Gulf; clayey that cover the floor of the Sporades basin and relict sands that cover mainly the central and eastern part of the self. Current meter measurements from different water depths were obtained from 10 stations on the shelf, shelf/break, within canyons and in the Sporades Basin. Surface currents over the period of the investigation are dominated by inertial currents generated by wind events. Inertial period currents also dominate the near-bed currents on the continental shelf and in Sporades Basin. On the canyon slope, however, tidal currents are the dominant ones; these relate to the amplification of the internal tide, within the submarine canyon. Measured near-bed currents are below the threshold for sediment movement in the case of flat seabeds, although they are capable to inhibit deposition of the settling clayey particles. This contributes also to a further offshore dispersal of riverine sediments. Moreover, increased bed roughness due to benthic activity can cause resuspension for lower current speeds

X-ray imaging of complex flow patterns during tungsten inert gas welding

Fusion welding techniques such as tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process have been widely used in industrial and construction applications. The molten metal flow in the weld pool has a major impact on the microstructure evolution, chemical element distribution and defects formation during solidification, which subsequently determines the performance of the welds. However, limited real-time experimental data availability of internal flow behavior has been considered as a major barrier to achieve a thorough understanding and development of accurate weld pool prediction models. In situ x-ray imaging with the tracking particles facilitated us to visualize the flow evolution during the solid–liquid–solid transformation. Experimental results indicated the flow patterns are progressively becoming complicated with the expansion of the melt pool. The shape of the melt pool also changed according to this flow evolution. Our analysis of flow patterns concerning the underlying variation of the driving forces suggests that gravity-derived buoyancy has a considerable effect on determining fluid flow at the melt pool periphery compared to other regions

Should We Continue to Measure Endometrial Thickness in Modern-Day Medicine? The Effect on Live Birth Rates and Birth Weight

    Get PDF
The evaluation of endometrial thickness (EMT) is still part of standard cycle monitoring during IVF, despite the lack of robust evidence of any value of this measurement to predict little revalidation in contemporary medical practice; other tools, however, such as endocrine profile monitoring, have become increasingly popular. The aim of this study was to reassess whether EMT affects the outcome of a fresh embryo transfer in modern-day medicine, using a retrospective, single-centre cohort of 3350 IVF cycles (2827 women) carried out between 2010 and 2014. In the multivariate regression analysis, EMT was non-linearly associated with live birth, with live birth rates being the lowest with an EMT less than 7.0 mm (21.6%; P < 0.001) and then between 7.0 mm and 9.0 mm (30.2%; P = 0.008). An EMT less than 7.0 mm was also associated with a decrease in neonatal birthweight z-scores (-0.40; 95% CI -0.69 to -0.12). In conclusion, these results reaffirm the use of EMT as a potential prognostic tool for live birth rates and neonatal birthweight in contemporary IVF, namely when considered together with other ovarian stimulation monitoring methods, such as the late-follicular endocrine profile.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Generalised Pustular Psoriasis (von Zumbusch type) following renal Transplantation. Report of a case and review of the literature

Generalized pustular psoriasis appears as an uncommon variant form of psoriasis consisting of widespread pustules on an erythematous background (von Zumbusch). A 39-year old male patient with a history of plaque psoriasis since the age of 9 who had an acute onset of generalized pustular psoriasis 12 days after he underwent renal transplantation is presented. Despite administered immunosuppression for transplantation the addition of cyclosporine A and methotrexate did not reverse the ongoing process of disease and the patient died on the 57th post-transplant day due to multiorgan failure following severe bone marrow suppression
