An Alternative Method to Obtain the Quark Polarization of the Nucleon

    Get PDF
An alternate method is described to extract the quark contribution to the spin of the nucleon directly from the first moment of the deuteron structure function, g1dg^d_1. It is obtained without recourse to the use of input on the nucleon wave function from hyperon decays involving the flavor symmetry parameters, F and D. The result for the quark polarization of the nucleon, ΔΣN,\Delta\Sigma_ N, is in good agreement with the values of the singlet axial current matrix element, a0a_0, obtained from recent next-to-leading order analyses of current proton, neutron and deuteron data.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

Quasi-Elastic Scattering in the Inclusive (3^3He, t) Reaction

    Get PDF
The triton energy spectra of the charge-exchange 12^{12}C(3^3He,t) reaction at 2 GeV beam energy are analyzed in the quasi-elastic nucleon knock-out region. Considering that this region is mainly populated by the charge-exchange of a proton in 3^3He with a neutron in the target nucleus and the final proton going in the continuum, the cross-sections are written in the distorted-wave impulse approximation. The t-matrix for the elementary exchange process is constructed in the DWBA, using one pion- plus rho-exchange potential for the spin-isospin nucleon- nucleon potential. This t-matrix reproduces the experimental data on the elementary pn \rightarrow np process. The calculated cross-sections for the 12^{12}C(3^3He,t) reaction at 2o2^o to 7o7^o triton emission angle are compared with the corresponding experimental data, and are found in reasonable overall accord.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 11 postscript figures available at [email protected], submitted to Phy.Rev.

Precision Determination of the Neutron Spin Structure Function g1n

We report on a precision measurement of the neutron spin structure function g1ng^n_1 using deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by polarized ^3He. For the kinematic range 0.014<x<0.7 and 1 (GeV/c)^2< Q^2< 17 (GeV/c)^2, we obtain 0.0140.7g1n(x)dx=0.036±0.004(stat)±0.005(syst)\int^{0.7}_{0.014} g^n_1(x)dx = -0.036 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.005 (syst) at an average Q2=5(GeV/c)2Q^2=5 (GeV/c)^2. We find relatively large negative values for g1ng^n_1 at low xx. The results call into question the usual Regge theory method for extrapolating to x=0 to find the full neutron integral 01g1n(x)dx\int^1_0 g^n_1(x)dx, needed for testing quark-parton model and QCD sum rules.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures To be published in Phys. Nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering as a tool to probe properties of three-nucleon forces

    Get PDF
Faddeev equations for elastic Nd scattering have been solved using modern NN forces combined with the Tucson-Melbourne two-pion exchange three-nucleon force, with a modification thereof closer to chiral symmetry and the Urbana IX three-nucleon force. Theoretical predictions for the differential cross section and several spin observables using NN forces only and NN forces combined with three-nucleon force models are compared to each other and to the existing data. A wide range of energies from 3 to 200 MeV is covered. Especially at the higher energies striking three-nucleon force effects are found, some of which are supported by the still rare set of data, some are in conflict with data and thus very likely point to defects in those three-nucleon force models.Comment: 30 pages, 14 Postscript figures; now minor changes in figures and reference

W+W- production and triple gauge boson couplings at LEP energies up to 183 GeV

    Get PDF
A study of W-pair production in e+e- annihilations at Lep2 is presented, based on 877 W+W- candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 57 pb-1 at sqrt(s) = 183 GeV. Assuming that the angular distributions of the W-pair production and decay, as well as their branching fractions, are described by the Standard Model, the W-pair production cross-section is measured to be 15.43 +- 0.61 (stat.) +- 0.26 (syst.) pb. Assuming lepton universality and combining with our results from lower centre-of-mass energies, the W branching fraction to hadrons is determined to be 67.9 +- 1.2 (stat.) +- 0.5 (syst.)%. The number of W-pair candidates and the angular distributions for each final state (qqlnu, qqqq, lnulnu) are used to determine the triple gauge boson couplings. After combining these values with our results from lower centre-of-mass energies we obtain D(kappa_g)=0.11+0.52-0.37, D(g^z_1)=0.01+0.13-0.12 and lambda=-0.10+0.13-0.12, where the errors include both statistical and systematic uncertainties and each coupling is determined setting the other two couplings to the Standard Model value. The fraction of W bosons produced with a longitudinal polarisation is measured to be 0.242+-0.091(stat.)+-0.023(syst.). All these measurements are consistent with the Standard Model expectations.Comment: 48 pages, LaTeX, including 13 eps or ps figures, submitted to European Physical Journal

Bose-Einstein Correlations of Three Charged Pions in Hadronic Z^0 Decays

    Get PDF
Bose-Einstein Correlations (BEC) of three identical charged pions were studied in 4 x 10^6 hadronic Z^0 decays recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP. The genuine three-pion correlations, corrected for the Coulomb effect, were separated from the known two-pion correlations by a new subtraction procedure. A significant genuine three-pion BEC enhancement near threshold was observed having an emitter source radius of r_3 = 0.580 +/- 0.004 (stat.) +/- 0.029 (syst.) fm and a strength of \lambda_3 = 0.504 +/- 0.010 (stat.) +/- 0.041 (syst.). The Coulomb correction was found to increase the \lambda_3 value by \~9% and to reduce r_3 by ~6%. The measured \lambda_3 corresponds to a value of 0.707 +/- 0.014 (stat.) +/- 0.078 (syst.) when one takes into account the three-pion sample purity. A relation between the two-pion and the three-pion source parameters is discussed.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures included, accepted by Eur. Phys. J.

Experimental Study of the Shortest Reset Word of Random Automata

    Get PDF
In this paper we describe an approach to finding the shortest reset word of a finite synchronizing automaton by using a SAT solver. We use this approach to perform an experimental study of the length of the shortest reset word of a finite synchronizing automaton. The largest automata we considered had 100 states. The results of the experiments allow us to formulate a hypothesis that the length of the shortest reset word of a random finite automaton with nn states and 2 input letters with high probability is sublinear with respect to nn and can be estimated as $1.95 n^{0.55}.

Self-Concept Clarity, Learned Helplessness and Fatigue Severity as Predictors of Psychoactive Drug Use and Abuse among Undergraduates

    Get PDF
This research investigated self-concept clarity, learned helplessness and fatigue severity on psychoactive drug use and abuse among undergraduates of Benue State University, Makurdi. A cross-sectional survey design was used for the study. A total number of 400 participants consisted of 240 (60.0%) males and 160 (40.0%) females were used. A battery of standardized tests such as learned helplessness scale self-concept scale, fatigue severity scale and substance scale were used for data collection. Findings from the first hypothesis indicated that that self-concept clarity did not significantly predict psychoactive drug use and abuse among undergraduates of Benue State University, Makurdi. On the other hand, there was a significant relationship between learned helplessness and psychoactive drug use and abuse among undergraduates of Benue State University, Makurdi. In the same vein, there was a significant relationship between fatigue severity and psychoactive drug use and abuse among undergraduates of Benue State University, Makurdi. The result also indicated that there was significant joint relationship among self-concept clarity, learned helplessness, fatigue severity and psychoactive drug use and abuse among undergraduates of Benue State University, Makurdi. It was concluded that self-concept clarity, learned helplessness and fatigue severity have significant relationship with psychoactive drug use and abuse. It was recommended that students should not be pushed into situation that could lead them to learn to be helpless and as the same time too much stress should be avoided among students in order not to make them engage into drug use as a result of fatigue

Azimuthal anisotropy of K0s and Lambda prduction at mid-rapidity from Au+Au collisions at root s = 130 GeV

We report STAR results on the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v2 for strange particles K0S, L and Lbar at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 130 GeV at RHIC. The value of v2 as a function of transverse momentum of the produced particles pt and collision centrality is presented for both particles up to pt 3.0 GeV/c. A strong pt dependence in v2 is observed up to 2.0 GeV/c. The v2 measurement is compared with hydrodynamic model calculations. The physics implications of the pt integrated v2 magnitude as a function of particle mass are also discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, by the STAR collaboratio
