A compactness theorem for scalar-flat metrics on manifolds with boundary

Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. This paper is concerned with the set of scalar-flat metrics which are in the conformal class of g and have the boundary as a constant mean curvature hypersurface. We prove that this set is compact for dimensions greater than or equal to 7 under the generic condition that the trace-free 2nd fundamental form of the boundary is nonzero everywhere.Comment: 49 pages. Inelastic and elastic collision rates for triplet states of ultracold strontium

    Get PDF
We report measurement of the inelastic and elastic collision rates for ^{88}Sr atoms in the (5s5p)^3P_0 state in a crossed-beam optical dipole trap. This is the first measurement of ultracold collision properties of a ^3P_0 level in an alkaline-earth atom or atom with similar electronic structure. Since the (5s5p)^3P_0 state is the lowest level of the triplet manifold, large loss rates indicate the importance of principle-quantum-number-changing collisions at short range. We also provide an estimate of the collisional loss rates for the (5s5p){^3P_2} state.Comment: 4 pages 5 figure

Increase of cold tolerance in cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum L.) by mepiquat chloride

Three mepiquat chloride (MC) concentrations - 40, 70, and 100 g a.i./ha - were used to spray cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., cultival McNair 220) plants to determine whether or not MC would increase their cold tolerance. Seven to ten days after the spray, the plants were exposed to three different cold treatments. No important difference in cold damage was noticed between the control and the MC-treated plants when they were exposed repeatedly to 4.5 C. No plants died when exposed to 0.5 C for 12 h; however, 90% of the 1st and 2nd leaves of the control plants were damaged. This was three times more damage than those leaves of plants treated with 70 and 100 g a.i./ha MC concentrations; 60% f the control and 10-20% of the MC-treated plants died when the plants were subjected to a cold hardening process with 15.5 C day (12 h) and 1.7 C night (12 h) for 10 days, and then, held at -2.2 C for 24 hours. The electrolyte leakage and reflectance measurement data showed that the cell membranes of the MC-treated plants sustained much less damage than those of the control. Freezing injury was easily assessed by reflectance measurements at the 1.65 micrometer wavelength

A simple mechanism to reproduce the neural solution of the aperture problem in monkey area MT

ISBN : 978-2-9532965-0-1We propose a simple mechanism to reproduce the neural solution of the aperture problem in monkey area MT. More precisely, our goal is to propose a model able to reproduce the dynamical change of the preferred direction (PD) of a MT cell depending on the motion information contained in the input stimulus. The PD of a MT cell measured through drifting gratings differs of the one measured using a barberpole, which is highly related with its aspect ratio. For a barberpole, the PD evolves from the perpendicular direction of the drifting grating to a PD shifted according to the aspect ratio of the barberpole. The mechanisms underlying this dynamic are unknown (lateral connections, surround suppression, feed-backs from higher layers). Here, we show that a simple mechanism such as surround-inhibition in V1 neurons can produce a significant shift in the PD of MT neurons as observed with barberpoles of different aspect ratios

Non-collaborative Attackers and How and Where to Defend Flawed Security Protocols (Extended Version)

Security protocols are often found to be flawed after their deployment. We present an approach that aims at the neutralization or mitigation of the attacks to flawed protocols: it avoids the complete dismissal of the interested protocol and allows honest agents to continue to use it until a corrected version is released. Our approach is based on the knowledge of the network topology, which we model as a graph, and on the consequent possibility of creating an interference to an ongoing attack of a Dolev-Yao attacker, by means of non-collaboration actuated by ad-hoc benign attackers that play the role of network guardians. Such guardians, positioned in strategical points of the network, have the task of monitoring the messages in transit and discovering at runtime, through particular types of inference, whether an attack is ongoing, interrupting the run of the protocol in the positive case. We study not only how but also where we can attempt to defend flawed security protocols: we investigate the different network topologies that make security protocol defense feasible and illustrate our approach by means of concrete examples.Comment: 29 page

This publication evidences the results of a study that determined and interpreted perceptions and conceptions about institutional culture of school administrators, teachers and students of Institucion Educativa Fundadores Ram?n Bueno y Jos? Triana of Girardot in 2012, within a mixed type study sought to identify all cultural features generated by the institution as a social entity providing theoretical and methodological elements to the study of organizational culture. To this purpose, three categories were considered responding to five axes: the conception of values, the values perceived in reality, the correspondence of the mission and vision, the rituals in the Institution, and traditions, myths and legends in the Institution. To this end, two moments were considered: first, a study of natural semantic networks that used the five axes as stimuli generators, on the other hand, the interview was used to corroborate the quantitative study taking as its starting point the three categories proposed. It was found that respect is the value that best develops the way of being of the people according to the conception of the actors of the educational institution, but in reality it is the most widely violated so the precept and reality have meaning opposite. On the other hand, it was made evident heterogeneity in the perception of teachers, school administrators and students against the impact that generates the mission and vision of the institution. Finally, it was interpreted the rituals, traditions, myths and legends that offered a campus identity in order to strengthen those who contribute to its best cultural operation and transforming conception of the actions considered as negatives.1.
