The Demographic Transition and the Sexual Division of Labor
This paper presents a theory where increases in female labor force participation and reductions in the gender wage-gap are generated as part of a single process of demographic transition, characterized by reductions in mortality and fertility. The paper suggests a link between changes in mortality and transformations in the role of women in society that has not been identified before in the literature. Mortality reductions affect the incentives of individuals to invest in human capital and to have children. Particularly, gains in adult longevity reduce fertility, increase investments in market human capital, increase female labor force participation, and reduce the wage differential between men and women. Child mortality reductions, though reducing fertility, do not generate this same pattern of changes. The model reconciles the increase in female labor market participation with the timing of age-specific mortality reductions observed during the demographic transition. It generates changes in fertility, labor market attachment, and the gender wage-gap as part of a single process of social transformation, triggered by reductions in mortality.
Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics of Anharmonic Crystals with Self-consistent Stochastic Reservoirs
We consider a d-dimensional crystal with an arbitrary harmonic interaction
and an anharmonic on-site potential, with stochastic Langevin heat bath at each
site. We develop an integral formalism for the correlation functions that is
suitable for the study of their relaxation (time decay) as well as their
behavior in space. Furthermore, in a perturbative analysis, for the
one-dimensional system with weak coupling between the sites and small quartic
anharmonicity, we investigate the steady state and show that the Fourier's law
holds. We also obtain an expression for the thermal conductivity (for arbitrary
next-neighbor interactions) and give the temperature profile in the steady
state
Use of fluent for the development of a di-si engine
The recent surge of electric vehicles has put pressure on the development and manufacture of batteries. However, batteries are still expensive, bulky and heavy, creating the need for inboard electricity generation using an internal combustion engine, usually referred as “range extender”. This paper presents the initial development of a DI-SI engine to work as range extender, focusing on the interaction between fuel spray
and airflow inside the combustion chamber.
To enable efficient combustion of lean and extra lean mixtures, a technique called stratified charge, is used. With direct injection spark ignition (DI-SI) engines it is important, under part load, to direct the fuel spray to the vicinities of the spark plug, enabling a fast and stable combustion of a lean mixture. A rich mixture region is created near the spark plug allowing an easy kernel formation and development.
There are three types of systems for “directing” the fuel spray towards the spark plug: wall guided, air guided and spray guided. The developed design is a mixture of wall and air guided systems and the idea is to inject the spray towards the piston crown and to divert it to the spark plug location by the barrel swirl existent within the combustion chamber at this time. The system development was carried out using CFD FLUENT code.
The study comprises three parts, the design of the components and its location (combustion chamber, piston crown, intake passage and injector location and aim), the air flow modeling and finally, the two phase modelling. A simple engine geometry and mesh were created in the Ansys CFD software. The air flow was considered to be transient, incompressible, Newtonian and viscous turbulent. The turbulence model used was the standard k-ε model, since it is the most common, simple and well-known model of turbulence. The spray has been simulated using the Discrete Phase Model. The Lagrangian discrete phase model in Fluent™ follows the Euler-Lagrange approach, where the fluid phase is treated as a continuum by solving the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, while the dispersed phase is solved by tracking a large number of particles through the calculated flow field. Characterizing Width Uniformity by Wave Propagation
This work describes a novel image analysis approach to characterize the
uniformity of objects in agglomerates by using the propagation of normal
wavefronts. The problem of width uniformity is discussed and its importance for
the characterization of composite structures normally found in physics and
biology highlighted. The methodology involves identifying each cluster (i.e.
connected component) of interest, which can correspond to objects or voids, and
estimating the respective medial axes by using a recently proposed wavefront
propagation approach, which is briefly reviewed. The distance values along such
axes are identified and their mean and standard deviation values obtained. As
illustrated with respect to synthetic and real objects (in vitro cultures of
neuronal cells), the combined use of these two features provide a powerful
description of the uniformity of the separation between the objects, presenting

Identificação e análise de genes expressos em semente e polpa de cupuaçuzeiro.
O cupuaçuzeiro, Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex Spreng.) Schumm., é a segunda espécie mais importante para a fruticultura da região amazônica, com cerca de 10% do mercado de todas as frutas amazônicas. Apesar de sua importância econômica, pouco se conhece sobre a base genética desta planta, em particular, as bases moleculares. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar genes expressos em frutos de cupuaçuzeiro, para disponibilizar uma nova ferramenta de apoio aos trabalhos de melhoramento genético. RNA dos frutos foram obtidos e, após processamento, as sequências foram determinadas por pirosequenciamento, utilizando-se a plataforma 454 (Roche Applied Science). Para os processos de limpeza das sequências e obtenção dos contigs, foram utilizados os programas est2assembly e mira assembly. A busca por similaridade foi realizada utilizando o programa BLASTX contra o banco de dados de proteínas NR (não-redundante). Cerca de 6.200 contigs apresentaram similaridade com proteínas previamente descritas. Em seguida, foram selecionados alguns contigs com potencial para utilização nos programas de melhoramento vegetal. Dentre eles, 20 foram similares a proteínas descritas para o gênero Theobroma e 6 para outros gêneros. As sequências selecionadas são relacionadas a genes codificadores de proteínas de reserva, de resposta a estresse, da via de síntese de ácidos graxos, etc. Análises mais aprofundadas das sequências permitirão a construção de uma importante base de dados moleculares para esta cultura
Análise e caracterização do gene de osmotina em cupuaçuzeiro.
O cupuaçuzeiro, Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex Spreng.) Schum., pertence à família Malvaceae e é nativo da região Amazônica. A cultura do cupuaçuzeiro é afetada pela doença vassoura-de-bruxa, causada pelo fungo Moniliophthora perniciosa, provocando uma grande redução na produção de frutos. O conhecimento molecular da interação planta-patógeno é essencial para o desenvolvimento de ferramentas para o controle da doença, como por exemplo, a identificação de genótipos resistentes. Genes expressos em resposta ao ataque de patógenos são alvos de estudos desta interação. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi caracterizar um deles, o gene de osmotina, em cupuaçuzeiro. Sequências anotadas do transcriptoma de frutos de cupuaçuzeiro foram avaliadas quanto à presença deste gene. Os genes identificados foram comparados ao de osmotina de cacau pelo programa BLAST. Além disso, a organização do gene foi analisada por Southern blot, utilizando DNA genômico de cupuaçu. Identificaram-se duas sequências tipo osmotina: uma de 381 pb e outra de 477 pb, que correspondem a aproximadamente 63% e 79%, respectivamente, da região codificadora da proteína madura de cacau (607 pb). A comparação destas duas sequências com o gene de osmotina de cacau revelou identidade de cerca de 70%. Quanto à organização genômica em cupuaçu, foi observado que o gene está presente em múltiplas cópias. Estudos posteriores são necessários para investigar o envolvimento deste gene com os fenótipos de resistência à vassoura-de-bruxa
