Transverse phase-locking in fully frustrated Josephson junction arrays: a new type of fractional giant steps
We study, analytically and numerically, phase locking of driven vortex
lattices in fully-frustrated Josephson junction arrays at zero temperature. We
consider the case when an ac current is applied {\it perpendicular} to a dc
current. We observe phase locking, steps in the current-voltage
characteristics, with a dependence on external ac-drive amplitude and frequency
qualitatively different from the Shapiro steps, observed when the ac and dc
currents are applied in parallel. Further, the critical current increases with
increasing transverse ac-drive amplitude, while it decreases for longitudinal
ac-drive. The critical current and the phase-locked current step width,
increase quadratically with (small) amplitudes of the ac-drive. For larger
amplitudes of the transverse ac-signal, we find windows where the critical
current is hysteretic, and windows where phase locking is suppressed due to
dynamical instabilities. We characterize the dynamical states around the
phase-locking interference condition in the curve with voltage noise,
Lyapunov exponents and Poincar\'e sections. We find that zero temperature
phase-locking behavior in large fully frustrated arrays is well described by an

Endocrinology application of molecular imaging: current role of PET/CT
Background: In recent years, nuclear medicine imaging methods have proven to be of paramount importance in a wide variety of diseases, particularly in oncology, where they are crucial for assessing the extent of disease when conventional methods fall short. Moreover, nuclear imaging modalities are able to better characterize lesions using target agents related to specific pathways (e.g. glucose metabolism, cellular proliferation, amino acid transport, lipid metabolism, specific receptor ligands). The clinical presentation of endocrine diseases encompasses a broad spectrum of sign and symptoms. Moreover, endocrine tumors show varying degrees of aggressiveness from well differentiated and indolent to highly aggressive cancers, respectively. Rationale: With the application of new medicinal radio-compounds and increasingly advanced tomographic imaging technology, the utility of Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) in the field of endocrine diseases is expanding. Aim: This review aims to analyze and summarize the primary indications of PET/CT, providing a practical approach for clinicians. A comprehensive literature search on PubMed was conducted to provide an updated overview of the available evidence regarding the use of PET/CT in endocrinology. Within this review, we will discuss the applications of PET/CT, compare different radiopharmaceuticals and highlight the uptake mechanism, excluding neuroendocrine carcinomas from discussion. Conclusions: PET/CT is a valuable tool in diagnosing and managing endocrine disorders due to its capacity to furnish both functional and anatomical information, facilitate early lesion detection, guide treatment decisions, and monitor treatment response. Its non-invasive nature and precision make it an integral component of modern endocrine healthcare. This review aims to provide physicians with a clear perspective on the role of PET/CT imaging, discussing its emerging opportunities and appropriateness of use in endocrinological diseases
High transverse momentum eta meson production in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of eta mesons in the range p_T~2-12
GeV/c have been measured at mid-rapidity (|\eta| < 0,35) by the PHENIX
experiment at RHIC in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV.
The eta mesons are reconstructed through their eta--> \gamma\gamma channel for
the three colliding systems as well as through the eta-->pi^0 pi+ pi- decay
mode in p+p and d+Au collisions. The nuclear modification factor in d+Au
collisions, R_dAu(p_T~1.0-1.1, suggests at most only modest p_T broadening
("Cronin enhancement"). In central Au+Au reactions, the eta yields are
significantly suppressed, with R_AuAu(pT)~0.2. The ratio of eta to pi^0 yields
is approximately constant as a function of p_T for the three colliding systems
in agreement with the high-p_T world average of R_eta/pi^0 \approx 0.5 in
hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions for a wide range
of center-of-mass energies [sqrt(s_NN)~3-1800 GeV] as well as, for high scaled
momentum x_p, in e+e- annihilations at sqrt(s)=91.2 GeV. These results are
consistent with a scenario where high-p_T eta production in nuclear collisions
at RHIC is largely unaffected by initial-state effects, but where light-quark
mesons (pi^0;eta) are equally suppressed due to final-state interactions of the

"Liberalizing" the English National Health Service: background and risks to healthcare entitlement
Resumo: A recente reforma do Serviço Nacional de Saúde (NHS) inglês por meio do Health and Social Care Act de 2012 introduziu mudanças importantes na organização, gestão e prestação de serviços públicos de saúde na Inglaterra. O objetivo deste estudo é analisar as reformas do NHS no contexto histórico de predomínio de teorias neoliberais desde 1980 e discutir o processo de "liberalização" do NHS. São identificados e analisados três momentos: (i) gradativa substituição ideológica e teórica (1979-1990) - transição da lógica profissional e sanitária para uma lógica gerencial/comercial; (ii) burocracia e mercado incipiente (1991-2004) - estruturação de burocracia voltada à administração do mercado interno e expansão de medidas pró-mercado; e (iii) abertura ao mercado, fragmentação e descontinuidade de serviços (2005-2012) - fragilização do modelo de saúde territorial e consolidação da saúde como um mercado aberto a prestadores públicos e privados. Esse processo gradual e constante de liberalização vem levando ao fechamento de serviços e à restrição do acesso, comprometendo a integralidade, a equidade e o direito universal à saúde no NHS
Chromogranin-A as a Serum Marker for Neuroendocrine Tumors: Comparison with Neuron-Specific Enolase and Correlation with Immunohistochemical Findings
Background Chromogranin-A (Cg-A) is a 439-amino-acid protein contained in secretory granules of neuroendocrine cells, in addition to specific hormone peptides or neuropeptides. Since Cg-A is co-released with peptide hormones its serum concentration can be used as a marker of neuroendocrine tumors. Aim Evaluation of the analytical performance of a new IRMA method for Cg-A assay and of the clinical value of serum Cg-A and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in neuroendocrine tumors. In addition, we compared the diagnostic usefulness of both Cg-A and NSE serum levels and their relationship to tissue expression. Patients and methods Initially we evaluated the analytical performance (intra- and interassay imprecision, dilution test and detection limit) of the Cg-A RIACT method (CIS Bio-International, Gifsur-Yvette, France). We selected 50 patients affected by various histologically confirmed neuroendocrine tumors (NETs): 111In-pentetreotide scan and helical computed tomography were employed to assess tumor extent. Cg-A and NSE were measured before surgery in serum samples of patients and 50 age-matched controls by IRMA methods. After surgery immunohistochemical stains for Cg-A and NSE were performed on surgical specimens of tumor tissue. Results Cg-A levels were significantly higher (p<0.0001) in patients with NETs than in healthy controls and we found a positive correlation between serum and tissue expression (p<0.05). Serum levels of Cg-A were also related to tumor extent (p<0.05) but in some cases we observed significant elevation of serum Cg-A in small, intensely immunoreactive NETs. ROC curve analysis showed better accuracy for serum Cg-A compared to NSE in the diagnosis of NETs, while no significant relationship was found between serum expression and immunostaining for NSE. Discussion Our results confirmed the biological and clinical significance of circulating Cg-A as an expression of granular content in neuroendocrine tissues and supported the complementary usefulness of serum Cg-A in the diagnosis and evaluation of NETs together with imaging modalities. </jats:sec
Molecular imaging of thyroid and parathyroid diseases
Introduction: Molecular imaging of thyroid and parathyroid diseases has changed in recent years due to the introduction of new radiopharmaceuticals and new imaging techniques. Accordingly, we provided an clinicians-oriented overview of such techniques and their indications. Areas covered: A review of the literature was performed in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus without time or language restrictions through the use of one or more fitting search criteria and terms as well as through screening of references in relevant selected papers. Literature up to and including December 2023 was included. Screening of titles/abstracts and removal of duplicates was performed and the full texts of the remaining potentially relevant articles were retrieved and reviewed. Expert opinion: Thyroid and parathyroid scintigraphy remains integral in patients with thyrotoxicosis, thyroid nodules, differentiated thyroid cancer and, respectively, hyperparathyroidism. In the last years positron-emission tomography with different tracers emerged as a more accurate alternative in evaluating indeterminate thyroid nodules [18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)], differentiated thyroid cancer [124I-iodide, 18F-tetrafluoroborate, 18F-FDG] and hyperparathyroidism [18F-fluorocholine]. Other PET tracers are useful in evaluating relapsing/advanced forms of medullary thyroid cancer (18F-FDOPA) and selecting patients with advanced follicular and medullary thyroid cancers for theranostic treatments (68Ga/177Ga-somatostatin analogues)
Phosphorescent Energy Downshifting for Diminishing Surface Recombination in Silicon Nanowire Solar Cells
Molecularly engineered Ir(III) complexes can transfer energy from short-wavelength photons (lambda < 450 nm) to photons of longer wavelength (lambda > 500 nm), which can enhance the otherwise low internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of crystalline Si (c-Si) nanowire solar cells (NWSCs) in the shortwavelength region. Herein, we demonstrate a phosphorescent energy downshifting system using Ir(III) complexes at short wavelengths (300-450 nm) to diminish the severe surface recombination that occurs in c-Si NWSCs. The developed Ir(III) complexes can be considered promising energy converters because they exhibit superior intrinsic properties such as a high quantum yield, a large Stokes shift, a long exciton diffusion length in crystalline film, and a reproducible synthetic procedure. Using the developed 1011) complexes, highly crystalline energy downshifting layers were fabricated by ultrasonic spray deposition to enhance the photoluminescence efficiency by increasing the radiative decay. With the optimized energy downshifting layer, our 1cm(2) c-Si NWSCs with Ir(III) complexes exhibited a higher IQE value for short-wavelength light (300-450 nm) compared with that of bare Si NWSCs without Ir(III) complexes, resulting in a notable increase in the short-circuit current density (from 34.4 mA.cm(-2) to 36.5 mA.cm(-2) )
The Influence of Food Regimes on Oxidative Stress: A Permutation-Based Approach Using the NPC Test
(1) Background: This paper aims to assess the existence of significant differences between two dietary regimes (omnivorous vs. semi-vegetarian) with reference to some oxidative stress markers (SOD, GPx, TRxR, GR, AGEs, and AOPPs) using non-parametric combination methodology based on a permutation test. (2) Methods: At the endocrinology unit of Messina University Hospital, two hundred subjects were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their dietary habits. None were under any pharmacological treatment. Using the NPC test, all comparisons were performed stratifying patients according to gender, age (≤40 or >40 years), BMI (normal weight vs. overweight), physical activity (sedentary vs. active lifestyle), TSH, FT4 levels in quartiles, and diagnosis of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. We evaluated differences in oxidative stress parameters in relation to two examined dietary regimes (omnivorous vs. semi-vegetarian). (3) Results: The antioxidant parameters GPx and TRxR were significantly lower in subjects with an omnivorous diet than in semi-vegetarians, particularly in females, both age groups, subjects with normal weight, those not affected by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and both the sedentary and active lifestyle groups. Finally, the AGE and AOPP markers were significantly lower in semi-vegetarians. (4) Conclusion: Thanks to the NPC methodology, we can state that dietary patterns exert a significant influence on some oxidative stress parameters
Genetic and environmental influence on thyroid gland volume and thickness of thyroid isthmus: a twin study.
Objectives Decreased thyroid volume has been related to increased prevalence of thyroid cancer.Subjects and methods One hundred and fourteen Hungarian adult twin pairs (69 monozygotic, 45 dizygotic) with or without known thyroid disorders underwent thyroid ultrasound. Thickness of the thyroid isthmus was measured at the thickest portion of the gland in the midline using electronic calipers at the time of scanning. Volume of the thyroid lobe was computed according to the following formula: thyroid height*width*depth*correction factor (0.63).Results Age-, sex-, body mass index- and smoking-adjusted heritability of the thickness of thyroid isthmus was 50% (95% confidence interval [CI], 35 to 66%). Neither left nor right thyroid volume showed additive genetic effects, but shared environments were 68% (95% CI, 48 to 80%) and 79% (95% CI, 72 to 87%), respectively. Magnitudes of monozygotic and dizygotic co-twin correlations were not substantially impacted by the correction of covariates of body mass index and smoking. Unshared environmental effects showed a moderate influence on dependent parameters (24-50%).Conclusions Our analysis support that familial factors are important for thyroid measures in a general twin population. A larger sample size is needed to show whether this is because of common environmental (e.g. intrauterine effects, regional nutrition habits, iodine supply) or genetic effects
