Exploring hidden narratives: Conscript graffiti at the former military base of Kummersdorf
This article explores the cultural significance and interpretative potential of graffiti left by Soviet conscripts at Kummersdorf, a former military base in the German federal state of Brandenburg. The graffiti is framed as war art and its typology, distribution and content is studied in detail. In this way opportunities for further research are highlighted, as well as the potential for the graffiti to contribute to interpretative and conservation strategies. We demonstrate how the graffiti embodies multi-level interpretative narratives which can help to reveal hidden aspects of Soviet conscript life and cultural practices whilst alluding to global events and Soviet and Russian military policy. More generally, the article aims to promote the potential of graffiti and other forms of what is traditionally considered vandalism to contribute to the cultural significance and interpretation of heritage sites
The eclipse of Epsilon Aurigae visible spectroscopy and ultraviolet activity
The preliminary results of the study of several high resolution spectrograms (lambda 3500 - lambda 7000 A), obtained at the Haute Provence Observatory (OHP) in France, at different epochs before, during and after the eclipse are reported. Some of these spectrograms are compared with corresponding IUE high resolution observations, in order to study the effects of the intrinsic UV activity, towards the longer wavelengths
Solar electric propulsion for Mars transport vehicles
Solar electric propulsion (SEP) is an alternative to chemical and nuclear powered propulsion systems for both piloted and unpiloted Mars transport vehicles. Photovoltaic solar cell and array technologies were evaluated as components of SEP power systems. Of the systems considered, the SEP power system composed of multijunction solar cells in an ENTECH domed fresnel concentrator array had the least array mass and area. Trip times to Mars optimized for minimum propellant mass were calculated. Additionally, a preliminary vehicle concept was designed
The Intrinsic Absorber in QSO 2359-1241: Keck and HST Observations
We present detailed analyses of the absorption spectrum seen in QSO 2359-1241
(NVSS J235953-124148). Keck HIRES data reveal absorption from twenty
transitions arising from: He I, Mg I, Mg II, Ca II, and Fe II. HST data show
broad absorption lines (BALs) from Al III 1857, C IV 1549, Si IV 1397, and N V
1240. Absorption from excited Fe II states constrains the temperature of the
absorber to 2000K < T < 10,000K and puts a lower limit of 10^5 cm^{-3} on the
electron number density. Saturation diagnostics show that the real column
densities of He I and Fe II can be determined, allowing to derive meaningful
constraints on the ionization equilibrium and abundances in the flow. The
ionization parameter is constrained by the iron, helium and magnesium data to
-3.0 < log(U) < -2.5 and the observed column densities can be reproduced
without assuming departure from solar abundances. From comparison of the He I
and Fe II absorption features we infer that the outflow seen in QSO 2359-1241
is not shielded by a hydrogen ionization front and therefore that the existence
of low-ionization species in the outflow (e.g., Mg II, Al III, Fe II) does not
necessitate the existence of such a front. We find that the velocity width of
the absorption systematically increases as a function of ionization and to a
lesser extent with abundance. Complementary analyses of the radio and
polarization properties of the object are discussed in a companion paper

Taming the Invisible Monster: System Parameter Constraints for Epsilon Aurigae from the Far-Ultraviolet to the Mid-Infrared
We have assembled new Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera
observations of the mysterious binary star Epsilon Aurigae, along with archival
far-ultraviolet to mid-infrared data, to form an unprecedented spectral energy
distribution spanning three orders of magnitude in wavelength from 0.1 microns
to 100 microns. The observed spectral energy distribution can be reproduced
using a three component model consisting of a 2.2+0.9/-0.8 Msun F type
post-asymptotic giant branch star, and a 5.9+/-0.8 Msun B5+/-1 type main
sequence star that is surrounded by a geometrically thick, but partially
transparent, disk of gas and dust. At the nominal HIPPARCOS parallax distance
of 625 pc, the model normalization yields a radius of 135+/-5 Rsun for the F
star, consistent with published interferometric observations. The dusty disk is
constrained to be viewed at an inclination of i > 87 deg, and has effective
temperature of 550+/-50 K with an outer radius of 3.8 AU and a thickness of
0.95 AU. The dust content of the disk must be largely confined to grains larger
than ~10 microns in order to produce the observed gray optical-infrared
eclipses and the lack of broad dust emission features in the archival Spitzer
mid-infrared spectra. The total mass of the disk, even considering a potential
gaseous contribution in addition to the dust that produces the observed
infrared excess, is << 1 Msun. We discuss evolutionary scenarios for this
system that could lead to the current status of the stellar components and
suggests possibilities for its future evolution, as well as potential

Emission of gamma rays shifted from resonant absorption by electron-nuclear double transitions in ^{151}Eu^{2+}:CaF_2
We show that the emission of a gamma-ray photon by a nucleus can be
influenced by a microwave magnetic field acting on the atomic electrons. We
study theoretically these electron-nuclear double transitions (ENDTs) for
^{151}Eu nuclei in a CaF_2 lattice at low temperature, in the presence of a
static magnetic field and of a microwave magnetic field. The ENDTs acquire a
significant intensity for certain resonance frequencies. The ENDTs are of
interest for the identification of the position of the lines in complex

The O I] 1641A line as a probe of symbiotic star winds
The neutral oxygen resonance 1302A line can, if the optical depth is
sufficiently high, de-excite by an intercombination transition at 1641A to a
metastable state. This has been noted in a number of previous studies but never
systematically investigated as a diagnostic of the neutral red giant wind in
symbiotic stars and symbiotic-like recurrent novae. We used archival high
resolution, and GHRS and STIS medium and high resolution, spectra to study a
sample of symbiotic stars. The integrated fluxes were measured, where possible,
for the O I 1302A and O I] 1641A lines. The intercombination 1641A line is
detected in a substantial number of symbiotic stars with optical depths that
give column densities comparable with direct eclipse measures (EG And) and the
evolution of the recurrent nova RS Oph 1985 in outburst. In four systems (EG
And, Z And, V1016 Cyg, and RR Tel), we find that the O I] variations are
strongly correlated with the optical light curve and outburst activity. This
transition can also be important for the study of a wide variety of sources in
which an ionization-bounded H II region is imbedded in an extensive neutral
medium, including active galactic nuclei, and not only for evaluations of

O ACOLHIMENTO INSTITUCIONAL DE CRIANÇAS E ADOLESCENTES: a excepcionalidade e o direito à convivência familiar e comunitária
RESUMO: O artigo tem como objetivo apresentar os resultados do estudo realizado em 2016, em instituição de acolhimento institucional, localizado no município de Florianópolis. O Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente e mais recentemente a Lei nº 12.010/2009, reforçam o principio da brevidade e excepcionalidade da medida protetiva de acolhimento institucional de crianças e adolescentes com direitos violados. Nesse sentido, procuramos discutir as motivações para a institucionalização, além do principio da excepcionalidade dessa medida judicial. Para tanto, analisamos 279 prontuários de crianças e adolescentes com medida protetiva de acolhimento institucional, entre 1994 e 2015. Os resultados evidenciam que as principais motivações são violência sexual, negligência e dependência química dos pais. Assim, os dados sugerem que as crianças e adolescentes submetidas ao acolhimento institucional tiveram seus direitos humanos fundamentais cassados em razão da violação de direitos na qual foram submetidos, sendo a sua institucionalização um processo de revitimização
Geometry of River Networks II: Distributions of Component Size and Number
The structure of a river network may be seen as a discrete set of nested
sub-networks built out of individual stream segments. These network components
are assigned an integral stream order via a hierarchical and discrete ordering
method. Exponential relationships, known as Horton's laws, between stream order
and ensemble-averaged quantities pertaining to network components are observed.
We extend these observations to incorporate fluctuations and all higher moments
by developing functional relationships between distributions. The relationships
determined are drawn from a combination of theoretical analysis, analysis of
real river networks including the Mississippi, Amazon and Nile, and numerical
simulations on a model of directed, random networks. Underlying distributions
of stream segment lengths are identified as exponential. Combinations of these
distributions form single-humped distributions with exponential tails, the sums
of which are in turn shown to give power law distributions of stream lengths.
Distributions of basin area and stream segment frequency are also addressed.
The calculations identify a single length-scale as a measure of size
fluctuations in network components. This article is the second in a series of

Effective quantum gravity observables and locally covariant QFT
Perturbative algebraic quantum field theory (pAQFT) is a mathematically
rigorous framework that allows to construct models of quantum field theories on
a general class of Lorentzian manifolds. Recently this idea has been applied
also to perturbative quantum gravity, treated as an effective theory. The
difficulty was to find the right notion of observables that would in an
appropriate sense be diffeomorphism invariant. In this article I will outline a
general framework that allows to quantize theories with local symmetries (this
includes infinitesimal diffeomorphism transformations) with the use of the BV
(Batalin-Vilkovisky) formalism. This approach has been successfully applied to
effective quantum gravity in a recent paper by R. Brunetti, K. Fredenhagen and
myself. In the same paper we also proved perturbative background independence
of the quantized theory, which is going to be discussed in the present work as
