Rhodium Doped Manganites : Ferromagnetism and Metallicity
The possibility to induce ferromagnetism and insulator to metal transitions
in small A site cation manganites Ln_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 by rhodium doping is shown
for the first time. Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties are evidenced
for a large compositional range (0.35 \leq x < 0.60). The ability of rhodium to
induce such properties is compared to the results obtained by chromium and
ruthenium doping. Models are proposed to explain this behavior.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Adatom incorporation and step crossing at the edges of 2D nanoislands
Adatom incorporation into the ``faceted'' steps bordering the 2D nanoislands
is analyzed. The step permeability and incorporation coefficients are derived
for some typical growth situations. It is shown that the step consisting of
equivalent straight segments can be permeable even in the case of fast egde
migration if there exist factors delaying creation of new kinks. The step
consisting of alternating rough and straight segments may be permeable if there
is no adatom transport between neighboring segments through the corner

Competition between ferromagnetism and spin glass: the key for large magnetoresistance in oxygen deficient perovskites SrCo1-xMxO3-d (M = Nb, Ru)
The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of the oxygen deficient
perovskites, SrCo1-xMxO3-d with M = Nb and Ru, were investigated. Both Nb- and
Ru-substituted cobaltites are weak ferromagnets, with transition temperatures
Tm of 130-150 K and 130-180 K, respectively, and both exhibit a spin glass
behavior at temperatures below Tf = 80-90 K. It is demonstrated that there
exists a strong competition between ferromagnetism and spin glass state, where
Co4+ induces ferromagnetism, whereas Nb or Ru substitution at the cobalt sites
induces magnetic disorder, and this particular magnetic behavior is the origin
of large negative magnetoresistance of these oxides, reaching up to 30% at 5 K
in 7 T. The differences between Nb- and Ru-substituted cobaltites are discussed
on the basis of the different electronic configuration of niobium and ruthenium

High magnetic field transport measurement of charge-ordered PrCaMnO strained thin films
We have investigated the magnetic-field-induced phase transition of
charge-ordered (CO) PrCaMnO thin films, deposited onto
(100)-oriented LaAlO and (100)-oriented SrTiO substrates using the
pulsed laser deposition technique, by measuring the transport properties with
magnetic fields up to 22T. The transition to a metallic state is observed on
both substrates by application of a critical magnetic field ( at 60K).
The value of the field required to destroy the charge-ordered insulating state,
lower than the bulk compound, depends on both the substrate and the thickness
of the film. The difference of the critical magnetic field between the films
and the bulk material is explained by the difference of in-plane parameters at
low temperature (below the CO transition). Finally, these results confirm that
the robustness of the CO state, depends mainly on the stress induced by the
difference in the thermal dilatations between the film and the substrate.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. To be published in Phys. Rev.
The blind spots of secularization
According to several international surveys Spain is among the western countries with the most negative views of Jews. While quantitative data on the topic accumulates, there is a significant lack of interpretative approaches that might explain the particular Spanish case. This paper presents the background, methodology and major results of a discussion group-based study on antisemitism, which was conducted in Spain in the autumn of 2009. The study identifies and locates in different socio-economic and ideological milieus the range of stereotypical discourses on Jews, Judaism and the Arab–Israeli conflict in Spain. Analysis of the group meetings shows that, despite growing secularization in Spanish society, the central explanatory variable for persisting and resurging antisemitism in this country is still religion in a broad cultural sense.Peer reviewe
Field-Induced Magnetization Steps in Intermetallic Compounds and Manganese Oxides: The Martensitic Scenario
Field-induced magnetization jumps with similar characteristics are observed
at low temperature for the intermetallic germanide Gd5Ge4and the mixed-valent
manganite Pr0.6Ca0.4Mn0.96Ga0.04O3. We report that the field location -and even
the existence- of these jumps depends critically on the magnetic field sweep
rate used to record the data. It is proposed that, for both compounds, the
martensitic character of their antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transitions
is at the origin of the magnetization steps.Comment: 4 pages,4 figure
Structural, magnetic and electrical properties of single crystalline La_(1-x)Sr_xMnO_3 for 0.4 < x < 0.85
We report on structural, magnetic and electrical properties of Sr-doped
LaMnO_3 single crystals for doping levels 0.4 < x < 0.85. The complex
structural and magnetic phase diagram can only be explained assuming
significant contributions from the orbital degrees of freedom. Close to x = 0.6
a ferromagnetic metal is followed by an antiferromagnetic metallic phase below
200 K. This antiferromagnetic metallic phase exists in a monoclinic
crystallographic structure. Following theoretical predictions this metallic
antiferromagnet is expected to reveal an (x^2-y^2)-type orbital order. For
higher Sr concentrations an antiferromagnetic insulator is established below

p.Ala541Thr variant of MEN1 gene: A non deleterious polymorphism or a pathogenic mutation?
Context
Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant inherited syndrome, related to mutations in the MEN1 gene. Controversial data suggest that the nonsynonymous p.Ala541Thr variant, usually considered as a non-pathogenic polymorphism, may be associated with an increased risk of MEN1-related lesions in carriers.
Objective
The aim of this study was to evaluate the pathogenic influence of the p.Ala541Thr variant on clinical and functional outcomes.
Patients and methods
We analysed a series of 55 index patients carrying the p.Ala541Thr variant. Their clinical profile was compared to that of 117 MEN1 patients. The biological impact of the p.Ala541Thr variant on cell growth was additionally investigated on menin-deficient Leydig cell tumour (LCT)10 cells generated from Men1+/Men1− heterozygous knock-out mice, and compared with wild type (WT).
Results
The mean age at first appearance of endocrine lesions was similar in both p.Ala541Thr carriers and MEN1 patients, but no p.Ala541Thr patient had more than one cardinal MEN1 lesion at initial diagnosis. A second MEN1 lesion was diagnosed in 13% of MEN1 patients and in 7% of p.Ala541Thr carriers in the year following preliminary diagnosis. Functional studies on LCT10 cells showed that overexpression of the p.Ala541Thr variant did not inhibit cell growth, which is in direct contrast to results obtained from investigation of WT menin protein.
Conclusion
Taken together, these data raise the question of a potential pathogenicity of the p.Ala541Thr missense variant of menin that commonly occurs within the general population. Additional studies are required to investigate whether it may be involved in a low-penetrance MEN1 phenotype
Non-linear electrical response in a charge/orbital ordered CaMnO crystal : the charge density wave analogy
Non-linear conduction in a charge-ordered manganese oxide
PrCaMnO is reported. To interpret such a feature, it is
usually proposed that a breakdown of the charge or orbitally ordered state is
induced by the current. The system behaves in such a way that the bias current
may generate metallic paths giving rise to resistivity drop. One can describe
this feature by considering the coexistence of localized and delocalized
electron states with independent paths of conduction. This situation is
reminiscent of what occurs in charge density wave systems where a similar
non-linear conduction is also observed. In the light of recent experimental
results suggesting the development of charge density waves in charge and
orbitally ordered manganese oxides, a phenomenological model for charge density
waves motion is used to describe the non-linear conduction in
PrCaMnO. In such a framework, the non-linear conduction
arises from the motion of the charge density waves condensate which carries a
