Meta-Learning for Phonemic Annotation of Corpora
We apply rule induction, classifier combination and meta-learning (stacked
classifiers) to the problem of bootstrapping high accuracy automatic annotation
of corpora with pronunciation information. The task we address in this paper
consists of generating phonemic representations reflecting the Flemish and
Dutch pronunciations of a word on the basis of its orthographic representation
(which in turn is based on the actual speech recordings). We compare several
possible approaches to achieve the text-to-pronunciation mapping task:
memory-based learning, transformation-based learning, rule induction, maximum
entropy modeling, combination of classifiers in stacked learning, and stacking
of meta-learners. We are interested both in optimal accuracy and in obtaining
insight into the linguistic regularities involved. As far as accuracy is
concerned, an already high accuracy level (93% for Celex and 86% for Fonilex at
word level) for single classifiers is boosted significantly with additional
error reductions of 31% and 38% respectively using combination of classifiers,
and a further 5% using combination of meta-learners, bringing overall word
level accuracy to 96% for the Dutch variant and 92% for the Flemish variant. We
also show that the application of machine learning methods indeed leads to
increased insight into the linguistic regularities determining the variation
between the two pronunciation variants studied.Comment: 8 page
Theoretical and experimental study of AC loss in HTS single pancake coils
The electromagnetic properties of a pancake coil in AC regime as a function
of the number of turns is studied theoretically and experimentally.
Specifically, the AC loss, the coil critical current and the voltage signal are
discussed. The coils are made of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10/Ag (BiSCCO) tape, although the
main qualitative results are also applicable to other kinds of superconducting
tapes, such as coated conductors. The AC loss and the voltage signal are
electrically measured using different pick up coils with the help of a
transformer. One of them avoids dealing with the huge coil inductance. Besides,
the critical current of the coils is experimentally determined by conventional
DC measurements. Furthermore, the critical current, the AC loss and the voltage
signal are simulated, showing a good agreement with the experiments. For all
simulations, the field dependent critical current density inferred from DC

On the Kauffman bracket skein module of the quaternionic manifold
We use recoupling theory to study the Kauffman bracket skein module of the
quaternionic manifold over Z[A,A^{-1}] localized by inverting all the
cyclotomic polynomials. We prove that the skein module is spanned by five
elements. Using the quantum invariants of these skein elements and the Z_2

An SIS-based sideband-separating heterodyne mixer optimized for the 600 to 720 GHz band
The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is the largest radio astronomical enterprise ever proposed. When completed, each of its 64 constituting radio-telescopes will be able to hold 10 heterodyne receivers covering the spectroscopic windows allowed by the atmospheric transmission at the construction site, the altiplanos of the northern Chilean Andes. In contrast to the sideband-separating (2SB) receivers being developed at low frequencies, double-side-band (DSB) receivers are being developed for the highest two spectroscopic windows (bands 9 and 10). Despite of the well known advantages of 2SB mixers over their DSB counterparts, they have not been implemented at the highest-frequency bands as the involved dimensions for some of the radio frequency components are prohibitory small. However, the current state-of-the-art micromachining technology has proved that the structures necessary for this development are attainable. Here we report the design, modeling, realization, and characterization of a 2SB mixer for band 9 of ALMA (600 to 720 GHz). At the heart of the mixer, two superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junctions are used as mixing elements. The constructed instrument presents an excellent performance as shown by two important figures of merit: noise temperature of the system and side band ratio, both of them within ALMA specifications
Relationship between nematode parasitism of the digestive tract and the characteristics of dairy goat farms in two French regions
East of France for nematode infection. The intensity of infection was assessed by means of individual faecal egg counts performed four times per year. The possible occurrence of resistance to benzimidazoles on the farms was evaluated by a faecal egg count reduction test. In parallel, information on the typological characteristics of the farms have been collected through a questionnaire on the general structure, the flock and the mode of management of parasitism. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was performed in order to examine the associations or oppositions between variables defining the farm and the level of parasitism. On the other hand, a Discriminant Analysis was applied to examine the factors explaining the mean annual number of anthelmintic treatments. Results from the PCA showed that the high level of infection was associated with the size of the flock, the total surface of farm and with the presence of other host species. On the other hand, nematode parasitism was inversely related to the milk production and to the stocking rate. The Discriminant Analysis indicated that farms with a low number of annual treatments (less than 2) were characterised either by a low stocking rate or by a large distribution of concentrates indoors despite the use of pastures. On the other hand, the group of farms with the highest number of antiparasitic treatments (more than 4) corresponded to farms where anthelmintic resistance to benzimidazoles has been identified during the survey. Ook is nagegaan of varkensbedrijven alternatieve vormen van huisvesting toe kunnen passen die minder vergaande investeringen vergen. Het beleid waarvoor de overgangstermijn per 2013 verstrijkt heeft vergaande gevolgen voor de gehele varkenssector
Knot invariants in lens spaces
In this survey we summarize results regarding the Kauffman bracket, HOMFLYPT,
Kauffman 2-variable and Dubrovnik skein modules, and the Alexander polynomial
of links in lens spaces, which we represent as mixed link diagrams. These
invariants generalize the corresponding knot polynomials in the classical case.
We compare the invariants by means of the ability to distinguish between some
difficult cases of knots with certain symmetries

Tannin containing legumes as a model for nutraceuticals against digestive parasites in livestock
Parasitic infections with gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) still represent a worldwide major pathological threat associated with the outdoor production of various livestock species. Because of the widespread resistance to synthetic chemical anthelmintics, there is a strong impetus to explore novel approaches for a more integrated management of the infections. The use of nutraceuticals in the control of GINs is one of the alternatives which has been widely studied for since 20 years. The objectives of this review are: i) to define and illustrate the concept of ‘nutraceutical’ in the
context of veterinary parasitology based on data obtained on the most studied GIN models in small ruminants, the tannin-containing legumes (Fabaceae); ii) to illustrate how the ‘nutraceutical concept’ could be expanded to other plants, other livestock production systems and other GI parasitic diseases, and iii) to explain how this concept is opening up new research fields for better

Do acute elevations of serum creatinine in primary care engender an increased mortality risk?
Background: The significant impact Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) has on patient morbidity and mortality emphasizes the need for early recognition and effective treatment. AKI presenting to or occurring during hospitalisation has been widely studied but little is known about the incidence and outcomes of patients experiencing acute elevations in serum creatinine in the primary care setting where people are not subsequently admitted to hospital. The aim of this study was to define this incidence and explore its impact on mortality. Methods: The study cohort was identified by using hospital data bases over a six month period. Inclusion criteria: People with a serum creatinine request during the study period, 18 or over and not on renal replacement therapy. The patients were stratified by a rise in serum creatinine corresponding to the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN) criteria for comparison purposes. Descriptive and survival data were then analysed. Ethical approval was granted from National Research Ethics Service (NRES) Committee South East Coast and from the National Information Governance Board. Results: The total study population was 61,432. 57,300 subjects with ‘no AKI’, mean age 64.The number (mean age) of acute serum creatinine rises overall were, ‘AKI 1’ 3,798 (72), ‘AKI 2’ 232 (73), and ‘AKI 3’ 102 (68) which equates to an overall incidence of 14,192 pmp/year (adult). Unadjusted 30 day survival was 99.9% in subjects with ‘no AKI’, compared to 98.6%, 90.1% and 82.3% in those with ‘AKI 1’, ‘AKI 2’ and ‘AKI 3’ respectively. After multivariable analysis adjusting for age, gender, baseline kidney function and co-morbidity the odds ratio of 30 day mortality was 5.3 (95% CI 3.6, 7.7), 36.8 (95% CI 21.6, 62.7) and 123 (95% CI 64.8, 235) respectively, compared to those without acute serum creatinine rises as defined. Conclusions: People who develop acute elevations of serum creatinine in primary care without being admitted to hospital have significantly worse outcomes than those with stable kidney function
