The progression of EU law: Accommodating change and upholding valuesGlobal Challenges (FGGA

Ukraine – resolve, resilience and prospects for the future

This advisory letter begins by taking stock of the past two years of war. The AIV then notes that the Western consensus is growing more fragile, that there are turning points in sight and that there is a danger of a protracted stalemate. This gives rise to the question of what position the Netherlands should take, especially given that a new government will be taking office in due course. The letter then discusses six subjects in greater detail: 1) the European security architecture; 2) the European defence industry; 3) the prospect of EU membership for Ukraine; 4) Ukraine’s reconstruction;5) the consequences of the war for the Global South; and6) resilience and public support.Security and Global Affair

Integration of auto-steering with adaptive cruise control for improved cornering behaviour

Several works have proposed longitudinal control strategies enabling a vehicle to operate adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance functions. However, no integration with lateral control has been proposed in the current state of the art, which motivates the developments of this work. This study presents an integrated control strategy for adaptive cruise control with auto-steering for highway driving. An appropriate logic-based control strategy is used to create synergies and safe interaction between longitudinal and lateral controllers to obtain both lateral stability and advanced adaptive cruise control functionalities. In particular, an index is proposed to evaluate lateral motion of the vehicle based on previously published experimental studies on human driving. In order to handle unstable lateral motion of the vehicle, the desired acceleration isdetermined based on physical limitation in braking with cornering situations. Simulation results show that the proposed integrated controller satisfies the performance in terms of autonomous driving, path tracking and collision avoidance for various driving situations.Accepted Author ManuscriptTeam DeSchutte

Real-time performance and safety validation of an integrated vehicle dynamic control strategy

The state of the art in automotive control has proposed several analytical, simulation and experimental studies of longitudinal adaptive cruise control strategies, and of lateral control strategies. However, methodical integration of these two strategies is to a large extent missing, as well as validation in real-time computing environment of the safety and performance of longitudinal and lateral integrated solutions. This work proposes a real-time validation of an integrated vehicle dynamic control strategy, designed to create safe interaction between longitudinal and lateral controllers: the integrated system is designed, implemented and tested through Dynacar, a real-time simulation environment for the development and validation of vehicle embedded functionalities. The results show that the proposed integrated controller satisfies the performance in terms of real-time computation, path tracking and collision avoidance for various driving situations.Team DeSchutte
