Shuttle/spacelab MMAP/electromagnetic environment experiment phase B definition study

    Get PDF
Progress made during the first five months of the Phase B definition study for the MMAP/Electromagnetic Environment Experiment (EEE) was described. An antenna/receiver assembly has been defined and sized for stowing in a three pallet bay area in the shuttle. Six scanning modes for the assembly are analyzed and footprints for various antenna sizes are plotted. Mission profiles have been outlined for a 400 km height, 57 deg inclination angle, circular orbit. Viewing time over 7 geographical areas are listed. Shuttle interfaces have been studied to determine what configuration the antenna assembly must have to be shared with other experiments of the Microwave Multi-Applications Payload (MMAP) and to be stowed in the shuttle bay. Other results reported include a frequency plan, a proposed antenna subsystem design, a proposed receiver design, preliminary outlines of the experiment controls and an analysis of on-board and ground data processing schemes

Urinary profiling datasets, previously acquired by capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass-spectrometry were investigated to identify a general urinary marker pattern for detection of solid tumors by targeting common systemic events associated with tumor-related inflammation. A total of 2,055 urinary profiles were analyzed, derived from a) a cancer group of patients (n = 969) with bladder, prostate, and pancreatic cancers, renal cell carcinoma, and cholangiocarcinoma and b) a control group of patients with benign diseases (n = 556), inflammatory diseases (n = 199) and healthy individuals (n = 331). Statistical analysis was conducted in a discovery set of 676 cancer cases and 744 controls. 193 peptides differing at statistically significant levels between cases and controls were selected and combined to a multi-dimensional marker pattern using support vector machine algorithms. Independent validation in a set of 635 patients (293 cancer cases and 342 controls) showed an AUC of 0.82. Inclusion of age as independent variable, significantly increased the AUC value to 0.85. Among the identified peptides were mucins, fibrinogen and collagen fragments. Further studies are planned to assess the pattern value to monitor patients for tumor recurrence. In this proof-of-concept study, a general tumor marker pattern was developed to detect cancer based on shared biomarkers, likely indicative of cancer-related features

Self Assembled Clusters of Spheres Related to Spherical Codes

We consider the thermodynamically driven self-assembly of spheres onto the surface of a central sphere. This assembly process forms self-limiting, or terminal, anisotropic clusters (N-clusters) with well defined structures. We use Brownian dynamics to model the assembly of N-clusters varying in size from two to twelve outer spheres, and free energy calculations to predict the expected cluster sizes and shapes as a function of temperature and inner particle diameter. We show that the arrangements of outer spheres at finite temperatures are related to spherical codes, an ideal mathematical sequence of points corresponding to densest possible sphere packings. We demonstrate that temperature and the ratio of the diameters of the inner and outer spheres dictate cluster morphology and dynamics. We find that some N-clusters exhibit collective particle rearrangements, and these collective modes are unique to a given cluster size N. We present a surprising result for the equilibrium structure of a 5-cluster, which prefers an asymmetric square pyramid arrangement over a more symmetric arrangement. Our results suggest a promising way to assemble anisotropic building blocks from constituent colloidal spheres.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figure

Light except Lupita: The representation of Black women in magazines

    Get PDF
Psychology is dominated by White Westerners. Subsequently researchers have minimised or ignored Black women’s body dissatisfaction. This study sought to account for the intersection of racism and body dissatisfaction by coding the representation of Black women, the number of appearance adverts and articles across 8 issues of mainstream women’s magazines (Elle, Vogue) and Black women’s magazines (Essence and Ebony) from 2015/16. The majority of Black women featured in the magazines (N = 539) were young (83 per cent) slim (62 per cent), had light skin (66 per cent) and straight hair (60 per cent). Compared to the Black women’s magazines, Black women were rarely represented in the mainstream women’s magazines (N = 64, 11 per cent) and when they were represented generally had straighter hair, narrow noses and lighter skin tones. This study underscores the need for psychology, including body dissatisfaction researchers, to recognise (and challenge) the intersections of racism with other impacts to wellbeing including body dissatisfaction

Electronic excitations stabilized by a degenerate electron gas in semiconductors

    Get PDF
Excitons in semiconductors and insulators consist of fermionic subsystems, electrons and holes, whose attractive interaction facilitates bound quasiparticles with quasi-bosonic character. In the presence of a degenerate electron gas, such excitons dissociate due to free carrier screening. Despite their absence, we found pronounced emission traces in the below-band-edge region of bulk, germanium-doped GaN up to a temperature of 100 K, mimicking sharp spectral features at high free electron concentrations (3.4E19–8.9E19 cm−3). Our interpretation of the data suggests that a degenerate, three-dimensional electron gas stabilizes a novel class of quasiparticles, which we name collexons. These many-particle complexes are formed by exchange of electrons with the Fermi gas. The potential observation of collexons and their stabilization with rising doping concentration is enabled by high crystal quality due to the almost ideal substitution of host atoms with dopants.DFG, 43659573, SFB 787: Semiconductor Nanophotonics: Materials, Models, Device

Integrative analysis of extracellular and intracellular bladder cancer cell line proteome with transcriptome: improving coverage and validity of -omics findings

    Get PDF
Characterization of disease-associated proteins improves our understanding of disease pathophysiology. Obtaining a comprehensive coverage of the proteome is challenging, mainly due to limited statistical power and an inability to verify hundreds of putative biomarkers. In an effort to address these issues, we investigated the value of parallel analysis of compartment-specific proteomes with an assessment of findings by cross-strategy and cross-omics (proteomics-transcriptomics) agreement. The validity of the individual datasets and of a “verified” dataset based on crossstrategy/omics agreement was defined following their comparison with published literature. The proteomic analysis of the cell extract, Endoplasmic Reticulum/Golgi apparatus and conditioned medium of T24 vs. its metastatic subclone T24M bladder cancer cells allowed the identification of 253, 217 and 256 significant changes, respectively. Integration of these findings with transcriptomics resulted in 253 “verified” proteins based on the agreement of at least 2 strategies. This approach revealed findings of higher validity, as supported by a higher level of agreement in the literature data than those of individual datasets. As an example, the coverage and shortlisting of targets in the IL-8 signalling pathway are discussed. Collectively, an integrative analysis appears a safer way to evaluate -omics datasets and ultimately generate models from valid observations

The complex and irrational problem of historical experience negative influence sets the trend for sociocultural researches. The solution of this problem facilitates the support of pluralism values in cultural and social fields. Ukraine belongs to the diversified community of the contemporary world. The diversity of the Ukrainian society can be a reason for decomposition and defragmentation of the Ukrainian society and a basis for social prosperity as well. The task of this sociocultural is the analysis of the inclusive vision designing in the modern Ukrainian society. The international institutional experience is the important part of pluralism standard introduction by means of the dialogical social strategy. The conclusion of this article confirms the following thesis: in modern societies clarification of global advantages of sociocultural diversity is based on the transcendental identity. The object of this research is clarification of principal questions of the inclusive vision. The analysis of the inclusive vision designing in contemporary Ukraine promotes social and cultural advantages of pluralism. The peculiar trait of pluralism in a community is a result of self-determination which is not a synonym of the cultural, political and ethnic diversity. The pluralism is a challenge of the global diversity. The content of this article represents a correlation between the myth of origin and the inclusive vision. The globalization fear and the social resentment are based on precritical thinking. In the global world the space of civic culture is not territorial or ethnic. The symbolic production of cultural and social fields in the civic culture is based on the transcendental identity which is not formed by presumption of common origins and collectivity but by mutual respect and security for everyone.

Limits on the Mass, Velocity and Orbit of PSR J1933-6211

We present a high-precision timing analysis of PSR J1933-6211, a millisecond pulsar (MSP) with a 3.5-ms spin period and a white dwarf (WD) companion, using data from the Parkes radio telescope. Since we have accurately measured the polarization properties of this pulsar we have applied the matrix template matching approach in which the times of arrival are measured using full polarimetric information. We achieved a weighted root-mean-square timing residuals (rms) of the timing residuals of 1.23 μs\rm \mu s, 15.5%\% improvement compared to the total intensity timing analysis. After studying the scintillation properties of this pulsar we put constraints on the inclination angle of the system. Based on these measurements and on χ2\chi^2 mapping we put a 2-σ\sigma upper limit on the companion mass (0.44 M_\odot). Since this mass limit cannot reveal the nature of the companion we further investigate the possibility of the companion to be a He WD. Applying the orbital period-mass relation for such WDs, we conclude that the mass of a He WD companion would be about 0.26±\pm0.01 M_\odot which, combined with the measured mass function and orbital inclination limits, would lead to a light pulsar mass \leqslant 1.0 M_\odot. This result seems unlikely based on current neutron star formation models and we therefore conclude that PSR J1933-6211 most likely has a CO WD companion, which allows for a solution with a more massive pulsar
