Towards a Graphene-Based Quantum Impedance Standard
Precision measurements of the quantum Hall resistance with alternating
current (ac) in the kHz range were performed on epitaxial graphene in order to
assess its suitability as a quantum standard of impedance. The quantum Hall
plateaus measured with alternating current were found to be flat within one
part in 10^7. This is much better than for plain GaAs quantum Hall devices and
shows that the magnetic-flux-dependent capacitive ac losses of the graphene
device are less critical. The observed frequency dependence of about
-8x10^-8/kHz is comparable in absolute value to the positive frequency
dependence of plain GaAs devices, but the negative sign is attributed to stray
capacitances which we believe can be minimized by a careful design of the
graphene device. Further improvements thus may lead to a simpler and more
user-friendly quantum standard for both resistance and impedance
Many worlds and modality in the interpretation of quantum mechanics: an algebraic approach
Many worlds interpretations (MWI) of quantum mechanics avoid the measurement
problem by considering every term in the quantum superposition as actual. A
seemingly opposed solution is proposed by modal interpretations (MI) which
state that quantum mechanics does not provide an account of what `actually is
the case', but rather deals with what `might be the case', i.e. with
possibilities. In this paper we provide an algebraic framework which allows us
to analyze in depth the modal aspects of MWI. Within our general formal scheme
we also provide a formal comparison between MWI and MI, in particular, we
provide a formal understanding of why --even though both interpretations share
the same formal structure-- MI fall pray of Kochen-Specker (KS) type
contradictions while MWI escape them.Comment: submitted to the Journal of Mathematical Physic
Involutive Categories and Monoids, with a GNS-correspondence
This paper develops the basics of the theory of involutive categories and
shows that such categories provide the natural setting in which to describe
involutive monoids. It is shown how categories of Eilenberg-Moore algebras of
involutive monads are involutive, with conjugation for modules and vector
spaces as special case. The core of the so-called Gelfand-Naimark-Segal (GNS)
construction is identified as a bijective correspondence between states on
involutive monoids and inner products. This correspondence exists in arbritrary
involutive categories

Design/methodology/approach – Banking and finance professionals (n=70) were shown 35 financial abuse case scenarios and were asked to judge how certain they were that the older person was being abused and the likelihood of taking action.
Findings – Three case features significantly influenced certainty of financial abuse: the nature of the financial problem presented, the older person's level of mental capacity and who was in charge of the client's money. In cases where the older person was more confused and forgetful, there was increased suspicion that financial abuse was taking place. Finance professionals were less certain that financial abuse was occurring if the older person was in charge of his or her own finances.
Originality/value – The research findings have been used to develop freely available online training resources to promote professionals' decision making capacity (www.elderfinancialabuse.co.uk). The resources have been advocated for use by Building Societies Association as well as CIFAS, the UK's Fraud Prevention Service. The research reported here was funded by the UK cross council New Dynamicsof Ageing Programme, ESRC Reference No. RES-352-25-0026, with Mary L.M. A quantum logical and geometrical approach to the study of improper mixtures
We study improper mixtures from a quantum logical and geometrical point of
view. Taking into account the fact that improper mixtures do not admit an
ignorance interpretation and must be considered as states in their own right,
we do not follow the standard approach which considers improper mixtures as
measures over the algebra of projections. Instead of it, we use the convex set
of states in order to construct a new lattice whose atoms are all physical
states: pure states and improper mixtures. This is done in order to overcome
one of the problems which appear in the standard quantum logical formalism,
namely, that for a subsystem of a larger system in an entangled state, the
conjunction of all actual properties of the subsystem does not yield its actual
state. In fact, its state is an improper mixture and cannot be represented in
the von Neumann lattice as a minimal property which determines all other
properties as is the case for pure states or classical systems. The new lattice
also contains all propositions of the von Neumann lattice. We argue that this
extension expresses in an algebraic form the fact that -alike the classical
case- quantum interactions produce non trivial correlations between the
systems. Finally, we study the maps which can be defined between the extended
lattice of a compound system and the lattices of its subsystems.Comment: submitted to the Journal of Mathematical Physic
Arabidopsis SABRE and CLASP interact to stabilize cell division plane orientation and planar polarity
The orientation of cell division and the coordination of cell polarity within the plane of the tissue layer (planar polarity) contribute to shape diverse multicellular organisms. The root of Arabidopsis thaliana displays regularly oriented cell divisions, cell elongation and planar polarity providing a plant model system to study these processes. Here we report that the SABRE protein, which shares similarity with proteins of unknown function throughout eukaryotes, has important roles in orienting cell division and planar polarity. SABRE localizes at the plasma membrane, endomembranes, mitotic spindle and cell plate. SABRE stabilizes the orientation of CLASP-labelled preprophase band microtubules predicting the cell division plane, and of cortical microtubules driving cell elongation. During planar polarity establishment, sabre is epistatic to clasp at directing polar membrane domains of Rho-of-plant GTPases. Our findings mechanistically link SABRE to CLASP-dependent microtubule organization, shedding new light on the function of SABRE-related proteins in eukaryotes
A Topological Study of Contextuality and Modality in Quantum Mechanics
Kochen-Specker theorem rules out the non-contextual assignment of values to
physical magnitudes. Here we enrich the usual orthomodular structure of quantum
mechanical propositions with modal operators. This enlargement allows to refer
consistently to actual and possible properties of the system. By means of a
topological argument, more precisely in terms of the existence of sections of
sheaves, we give an extended version of Kochen-Specker theorem over this new
structure. This allows us to prove that contextuality remains a central feature
even in the enriched propositional system.Comment: 10 pages, no figures, submitted to I. J. Th. Phy
Type-Decomposition of a Pseudo-Effect Algebra
The theory of direct decomposition of a centrally orthocomplete effect
algebra into direct summands of various types utilizes the notion of a
type-determining (TD) set. A pseudo-effect algebra (PEA) is a (possibly)
noncommutative version of an effect algebra. In this article we develop the
basic theory of centrally orthocomplete PEAs, generalize the notion of a TD set
to PEAs, and show that TD sets induce decompositions of centrally orthocomplete
PEAs into direct summands.Comment: 18 page
Information-theoretic principle entails orthomodularity of a lattice
Quantum logical axiomatic systems for quantum theory usually include a
postulate that a lattice under consideration is orthomodular. We propose a
derivation of orthomodularity from an information-theoretic axiom. This
provides conceptual clarity and removes a long-standing puzzle about the
meaning of orthomodularity.Comment: Version prior to published, with slight modification
A Dynamical Model of Color Confinement
A dynamical model of confinement based on a transport theoretical description
of the Friedberg-Lee model is extended to explicit color degrees of freedom.
The string tension is reproduced by an adiabatic string formation from the
nucleon ground state. Color isovector oscillation modes of a -system
are investigated for a wide range of relative -momenta and the
dynamical impact of color confinement on the quark motion is shown.Comment: 12 pages plus 5 figure
