The preservation of some Indian freshwater fish
Quality changes in Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Tilapia mossambica were studied during storage in ice and at ambient temperature (29-32°C). After 10h at ambient temperature L. rohita and T. mossambica were completely spoiled, while C. mrigala became unacceptable within 11h. Organoleptic examination, total volatile base nitrogen and total bacterial counts showed that L. rohita (0.5 kg and above) and C. mrigala (0.5 kg and above) were acceptable up to 7 to 8 days of storage in ice in popular container (Bamboo basket) lined with palmyrah mat) at ambient temperature while T. mossambica (30-40 g) was acceptable up to 6 days. Influence of size of fish on shelf life in ice studied with reference to L. rohita showed that fishes below 500 g were acceptable up to 6 days of storage in ice in popular container at ambient temperature while those above 1000 g size were acceptable up to 8 days. Provision of an alkathene lining to the popular container extended the storage life of L. rohita from 6 days to 8 days. Pre-chilled and iced L. rohita had a longer shel flife (9 days) than merely iced sample (7 days)
Data mining framework for fatty liver disease classification in ultrasound: a hybrid feature extraction paradigm
PURPOSE: Fatty liver disease (FLD) is an increasing prevalent disease that can be reversed if detected early. Ultrasound is the safest and ubiquitous method for identifying FLD. Since expert sonographers are required to accurately interpret the liver ultrasound images, lack of the same will result in interobserver variability. For more objective interpretation, high accuracy, and quick second opinions, computer aided diagnostic (CAD) techniques may be exploited. The purpose of this work is to develop one such CAD technique for accurate classification of normal livers and abnormal livers affected by FLD. METHODS: In this paper, the authors present a CAD technique (called Symtosis) that uses a novel combination of significant features based on the texture, wavelet transform, and higher order spectra of the liver ultrasound images in various supervised learning-based classifiers in order to determine parameters that classify normal and FLD-affected abnormal livers. RESULTS: On evaluating the proposed technique on a database of 58 abnormal and 42 normal liver ultrasound images, the authors were able to achieve a high classification accuracy of 93.3% using the decision tree classifier. CONCLUSIONS: This high accuracy added to the completely automated classification procedure makes the authors' proposed technique highly suitable for clinical deployment and usage
Li abundance/surface activity connections in solar-type Pleiades
The relation between the lithium abundance, <i>A<sub>Li</sub></i>, and photospheric activity of solar-type Pleiads is investigated for the first time via acquisition and analysis of B and V-band data. Predictions of activity levels of target stars were made according to the <i>A<sub>Li</sub></i>/ (B-V) relation and then compared with new CCD photometric measurements. Six sources behaved according to the predictions while one star (HII 676), with low predicted activity, exhibited the largest variability of the study; another star (HII 3197), with high predicted activity, was surprisingly quiet. Two stars displayed non-periodic fadings, this being symptomatic of orbiting disk-like structures with irregular density distributions. Although the observation windows were not ideal for rotational period detection, some periodograms provided possible values; the light-curve obtained for HII 1532 is consistent with that previously recorded
Detection of a period decrease in NN Ser with ULTRACAM: evidence for strong magnetic braking or an unseen companion?
We present results of high time resolution photometry of the eclipsing
pre-cataclysmic variable NN Ser. We observed 13 primary eclipses of NN Ser
using the high-speed CCD camera ULTRACAM and derived times of mid-eclipse, from
fitting of light curve models, with uncertainties as low as 0.06 s. The
observed rates of period change appear difficult to reconcile with any models
of orbital period change. If the observed period change reflects an angular
momentum loss, the average loss rate is consistent with the loss rates (via
magnetic stellar wind braking) used in standard models of close binary
evolution, which were derived from observations of much more massive cool
stars. Observations of low-mass stars such as NN Ser's secondary predict rates
of ~100 times lower than we observe. We show that magnetic activity-driven
changes in the quadrupole moment of the secondary star (Applegate, 1992) fail
to explain the period change by an order of magnitude on energetic grounds, but
that a light travel time effect caused by the presence of a third body in a
long (~ decades) orbit around the binary could account for the observed changes
in the timings of NN Ser's mid-eclipses. We conclude that we have either
observed a genuine angular momentum loss for NN Ser, in which case our
observations pose serious difficulties for the theory of close binary
evolution, or we have detected a previously unseen low-mass companion to the

Prioritizing hazardous pollutants in two Nigerian water supply schemes: a risk-based approach
Objective To rank pollutants in two Nigerian water supply schemes according to their effect on human health using a risk-based approach.
Methods Hazardous pollutants in drinking-water in the study area were identified from a literature search and selected pollutants were monitored from April 2010 to December 2011 in catchments, treatment works and consumer taps. The disease burden due to each pollutant was estimated in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) using data on the pollutant’s concentration, exposure to the pollutant, the severity of its health effects and the consumer population.
Findings The pollutants identified were microbial organisms, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead and zinc. All were detected in the catchments but only cadmium, cobalt, chromium, manganese and lead exceeded World Health Organization (WHO) guideline values after water treatment. Post-treatment contamination was observed. The estimated disease burden was greatest for chromium in both schemes, followed in decreasing order by cadmium, lead, manganese and cobalt. The total disease burden of all pollutants in the two schemes was 46 000 and 9500 DALYs per year or 0.14 and 0.088 DALYs per person per year, respectively, much higher than the WHO reference level of 1 × 10−6 DALYs per person per year. For each metal, the disease burden exceeded the reference level and was comparable with that due to microbial contamination reported elsewhere in Africa.
Conclusion The estimated disease burden of metal contamination of two Nigerian water supply systems was high. It could best be reduced by protection of water catchment and pretreatment by electrocoagulation
The chromospheric emission of solar-type stars in the young open clusters IC 2391 and IC 2602
In this paper we present chromospheric emission levels of the solar-type
stars in the young open clusters IC 2391 and IC 2602. High resolution
spectroscopic data were obtained for over 50 F, G, and K stars from these
clusters over several observing campaigns using the University College London
Echelle Spectrograph on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope. Unlike older
clusters, the majority (28/52) of the solar-type stars in the two clusters are
rapid-rotators (vsini > 20 km/s) with five of the stars being classified as
ultra-rapid rotators (vsini > 100 km/s). The emission levels in the Calcium
infrared triplet lines were then used as a measure of the chromospheric
activity of the stars. When plotted against Rossby number (NR) the star's
chromospheric emission levels show a plateau in the emission for Log(NR) < -1.1
indicating chromospheric saturation similar to the coronal saturation seen in
previously observed X-ray emission from the same stars. However, unlike the
coronal emission, the chromospheric emission of the stars show little evidence
of a reduction in emission (i.e. supersaturation) for the ultra-rapid rotators
in the clusters. Thus we believe that coronal supersaturation is not the result
of an overall decrease in magnetic dynamo efficiency for ultra-rapid rotators.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, Landscape tables in separate tex file, Accepted

Simultaneous Multi-Wavelength Observations of Magnetic Activity in Ultracool Dwarfs. III. X-ray, Radio, and H-alpha Activity Trends in M and L Dwarfs
[Abridged] As part of our on-going investigation into the magnetic field
properties of ultracool dwarfs, we present simultaneous radio, X-ray, and
H-alpha observations of three M9.5-L2.5 dwarfs (BRI0021-0214,
LSR060230.4+391059, and 2MASSJ052338.2-140302). We do not detect X-ray or radio
emission from any of the three sources, despite previous detections of radio
emission from BRI0021 and 2M0523-14. Steady and variable H-alpha emission are
detected from 2M0523-14 and BRI0021, respectively, while no H-alpha emission is
detected from LSR0602+39. Overall, our survey of nine M8-L5 dwarfs doubles the
number of ultracool dwarfs observed in X-rays, and triples the number of L
dwarfs, providing in addition the deepest limits to date, log(L_X/L_bol)<-5.
With this larger sample we find the first clear evidence for a substantial
reduction in X-ray activity, by about two orders of magnitude, from mid-M to
mid-L dwarfs. We find that the decline in both X-rays and H-alpha roughly
follows L_{X,Halpha}/L_bol ~ 10^[-0.4x(SP-M6)] for SP>M6. In the radio band,
however, the luminosity remains relatively unchanged from M0 to L4, leading to
a substantial increase in L_rad/L_bol. Our survey also provides the first
comprehensive set of simultaneous radio/X-ray/H-alpha observations of ultracool
dwarfs, and reveals a clear breakdown of the radio/X-ray correlation beyond
spectral type M7, evolving smoothly from L_{\nu,rad}/L_X ~ 10^-15.5 to
~10^-11.5 Hz^-1 over the narrow spectral type range M7-M9. This breakdown
reflects the substantial reduction in X-ray activity beyond M7, but its
physical origin remains unclear since, as evidenced by the uniform radio
emission, there is no drop in the field dissipation and particle acceleration

Rotational velocities of low-mass stars in the Pleiades and Hyades
We have obtained high-resolution spectra of 89 M dwarf members of the
Pleiades and Hyades and have derived radial velocities, H-alpha equivalent
widths, and spectroscopic rotational velocities for these stars. Typical masses
of the newly-observed Pleiades and Hyades stars are ~ 0.4 M_{\sun} and ~ 0.2
M_{\sun}, respectively. We combine our new observations with previously
published data to explore the rotational evolution of young stars with M < 0.4
M_\sun. The average rotation rate in the Hyades (age 600 Myr) is about 0.4 that
of the Pleiades (110 Myr), and the mean equivalent widths of H-alpha are also
lower. As found in previous studies, the correlation between rotation and
chromospheric activity is identical in both clusters, implying that the lower
activity in the Hyades is a result of the lower rotation rates. We show that a
simple scaling of the Pleiades rotational distribution for M \leq 0.4 M_{\sun},
corrected for the effects of structural evolution, matches that of the Hyades
if the average angular momentum loss from the Pleiades to the Hyades age is
factor of \approx 6. This suggests that the distribution of initial angular
momenta and disk-locking lifetimes for the lowest mass stars was similar in
both clusters. We argue that this result provides further evidence for a
