Study of the plutino object (208996) 2003 AZ84 from stellar occultations: size, shape and topographic features
We present results derived from four stellar occultations by the plutino
object (208996) 2003~AZ, detected at January 8, 2011 (single-chord
event), February 3, 2012 (multi-chord), December 2, 2013 (single-chord) and
November 15, 2014 (multi-chord). Our observations rule out an oblate spheroid
solution for 2003~AZ's shape. Instead, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium,
we find that a Jacobi triaxial solution with semi axes ~km % axis ratios and
, can better account for all our occultation observations.
Combining these dimensions with the rotation period of the body (6.75~h) and
the amplitude of its rotation light curve, we derive a density ~g~cm a geometric albedo . A grazing chord
observed during the 2014 occultation reveals a topographic feature along
2003~AZ's limb, that can be interpreted as an abrupt chasm of width
~km and depth ~km or a smooth depression of width ~km
and depth ~km (or an intermediate feature between those two extremes)
3D sunken relief generation from a single image by feature line enhancement
Sunken relief is an art form whereby the depicted shapes are sunk into a given flat plane with a shallow overall depth. In this paper, we propose an efficient sunken relief generation algorithm based on a single image by the technique of feature line enhancement. Our method starts from a single image. First, we smoothen the image with morphological operations such as opening and closing operations and extract the feature lines by comparing the values of adjacent pixels. Then we apply unsharp masking to sharpen the feature lines. After that, we enhance and smoothen the local information to obtain an image with less burrs and jaggies. Differential operations are applied to produce the perceptive relief-like images. Finally, we construct the sunken relief surface by triangularization which transforms two-dimensional information into a three-dimensional model. The experimental results demonstrate that our method is simple and efficient
The morphometry of soft tissue insertions on the tibial plateau: Data acquisition and statistical shape analysis
This study characterized the soft tissue insertion morphometrics on the tibial plateau and their inter-relationships as well as variabilities. The outlines of the cruciate ligament and meniscal root insertions along with the medial and lateral cartilage on 20 cadaveric tibias (10 left and 10 right knees) were digitized and co-registered with corresponding CT-based 3D bone models. Generalized Procrustes Analysis was employed in conjunction with Principal Components Analysis to first create a geometric consensus based on tibial cartilage and then determine the means and variations of insertion morphometrics including shape, size, location, and inter-relationship measures. Step-wise regression analysis was conducted in search of parsimonious models relating the morphometric measures to the tibial plateau width and depth, and basic anthropometric and gender factors. The analyses resulted in statistical morphometric representations for Procrustes-superimposed cruciate ligament and meniscus insertions, and identified only a few moderate correlations (R 2: 0.37-0.49). The study provided evidence challenging the isometric scaling based on a single dimension frequently employed in related morphometric studies, and data for evaluating cruciate ligament reconstruction strategies in terms of re-creating the native anatomy and minimizing the risk of iatrogenic injury. It paved the way for future development of computer-aided personalized orthopaedic surgery applications improving the quality of care and patient safety, and biomechanical models with a better population or average representation
A heterozygous moth genome provides insights into herbivory and detoxification
How an insect evolves to become a successful herbivore is of profound biological and practical importance. Herbivores are often adapted to feed on a specific group of evolutionarily and biochemically related host plants1, but the genetic and molecular bases for adaptation to plant defense compounds remain poorly understood2. We report the first whole-genome sequence of a basal lepidopteran species, Plutella xylostella, which contains 18,071 protein-coding and 1,412 unique genes with an expansion of gene families associated with perception and the detoxification of plant defense compounds. A recent expansion of retrotransposons near detoxification-related genes and a wider system used in the metabolism of plant defense compounds are shown to also be involved in the development of insecticide resistance. This work shows the genetic and molecular bases for the evolutionary success of this worldwide herbivore and offers wider insights into insect adaptation to plant feeding, as well as opening avenues for more sustainable pest management.Minsheng You … Simon W Baxter … et al
Acclimation of photosystem II to high temperature in two Wedelia species from different geographical origins: implications for biological invasions upon global warming
More intense, more frequent, and longer heat waves are expected in the future due to global warming, which could have dramatic ecological impacts. However, few studies have involved invasive species. The aims of this study were to examine the effect of extreme heating (40/35°C for 30d) on the growth and photosynthesis of an alien invasive species Wedelia trilobata and its indigenous congener (Wedelia chinensis) in South China, and to determine the development of this invasive species and its potential adaptive mechanism. In comparison with W. chinensis, W. trilobata suffered less inhibition of the relative growth rate (RGR) and biomass production due to high temperature, which was consistent with the changes of photosystem II (PSII) activity and net photosynthetic rate (Pn). High temperature caused a partial inhibition of PSII, but the adverse effect was more severe in W. chinensis. Measurement of the minimum fluorescence (Fo) versus temperature curves showed that W. trilobata had a higher inflexion temperature of Fo (Ti), indicating greater thermostability of the photosynthetic apparatus. Moreover, comparisons of absorbed light energy partitioning revealed that W. trilobata increased xanthophyll-dependent thermal dissipation (ΦNPQ) under high temperature, while retaining the higher fraction of absorbed light allocated to photochemistry (ΦPSII) relative to W. chinensis. The results suggest that the invasive W. trilobata has a high thermostability of its photosynthetic apparatus and an effective regulating mechanism in energy partitioning of PSII complexes to minimize potential damage and to retain greater capability for carbon assimilation. These factors confer greater heat stress tolerance compared with the native species. Therefore, the invasive W. trilobata may become more aggressive with the increasingly extreme heat climates
Knowledge and attitudes regarding perinatal infections among pregnant women in Singapore: a cross-sectional study
Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV), toxoplasma and listeria infections during pregnancy can result in devastating consequences and lifetime burden on parents and child. No vaccines are available. Risk of acquiring infections may reduce with greater awareness of preventive measures that can be undertaken during pregnancy and periconceptional period. This is the first study in Singapore to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of perinatal infections. No public health campaigns were done about perinatal infections and they are not routinely included in prenatal discussion. The aim of this study is to understand knowledge and attitudes of pregnant women regarding perinatal infections to better direct preventive efforts.
Methods: 400 pregnant respondents from two maternity outpatient units in Singapore completed the questionnaire. Univariate logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate relationship between knowledge levels and sociodemographic variables.
Results: Awareness of CMV (17.5%), toxoplasmosis (25.2%) and listeria (24.3%) infections was very low. In addition, while women with young children (OR 1.02, 95% CI 0.58-1.77) and those in childcare-related occupations (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.16-1.13) are at higher risk of acquiring CMV during pregnancy, they were no better informed than respondents without these risk factors. Women aware of CMV remained poorly informed about risks and preventive methods with almost half being unable to identify risk-reducing measures. Knowledge of preventive measures against toxoplasma and listeria infections was higher but still incomplete. Only 52% of respondents received information about precautionary measures, although most (83.5%) indicated they would have liked to receive more information.
Conclusions: Our findings highlight urgent need to improve educational efforts to increase awareness of these infections and preventive measures
May Measurement Month 2018: a pragmatic global screening campaign to raise awareness of blood pressure by the International Society of Hypertension
Aims
Raised blood pressure (BP) is the biggest contributor to mortality and disease burden worldwide and fewer than half of those with hypertension are aware of it. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global campaign set up in 2017, to raise awareness of high BP and as a pragmatic solution to a lack of formal screening worldwide. The 2018 campaign was expanded, aiming to include more participants and countries.
Methods and results
Eighty-nine countries participated in MMM 2018. Volunteers (≥18 years) were recruited through opportunistic sampling at a variety of screening sites. Each participant had three BP measurements and completed a questionnaire on demographic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg, or taking antihypertensive medication. In total, 74.9% of screenees provided three BP readings. Multiple imputation using chained equations was used to impute missing readings. 1 504 963 individuals (mean age 45.3 years; 52.4% female) were screened. After multiple imputation, 502 079 (33.4%) individuals had hypertension, of whom 59.5% were aware of their diagnosis and 55.3% were taking antihypertensive medication. Of those on medication, 60.0% were controlled and of all hypertensives, 33.2% were controlled. We detected 224 285 individuals with untreated hypertension and 111 214 individuals with inadequately treated (systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg) hypertension.
Conclusion
May Measurement Month expanded significantly compared with 2017, including more participants in more countries. The campaign identified over 335 000 adults with untreated or inadequately treated hypertension. In the absence of systematic screening programmes, MMM was effective at raising awareness at least among these individuals at risk
