Flat Dielectric Grating Reflectors with High Focusing Power

Sub-wavelength dielectric gratings (SWG) have emerged recently as a promising alternative to distributed-Bragg-reflection (DBR) dielectric stacks for broadband, high-reflectivity filtering applications. A SWG structure composed of a single dielectric layer with the appropriate patterning can sometimes perform as well as thirty or forty dielectric DBR layers, while providing new functionalities such as polarization control and near-field amplification. In this paper, we introduce a remarkable property of grating mirrors that cannot be realized by their DBR counterpart: we show that a non-periodic patterning of the grating surface can give full control over the phase front of reflected light while maintaining a high reflectivity. This new feature of dielectric gratings could have a substantial impact on a number of applications that depend on low-cost, compact optical components, from laser cavities to CD/DVD read/write heads.Comment: submitted to Nature Photonic

Emission line taxonomy and the nature of AGN-looking galaxies in the SDSS

Massive spectroscopic surveys like the SDSS have revolutionized the way we study AGN and their relations to the galaxies they live in. A first step in any such study is to define samples of different types of AGN on the basis of emission line ratios. This deceivingly simple step involves decisions on which classification scheme to use and data quality censorship. Galaxies with weak emission lines are often left aside or dealt with separately because one cannot fully classify them onto the standard Star-Forming, Seyfert of LINER categories. This contribution summarizes alternative classification schemes which include this very numerous population. We then study how star-formation histories and physical properties of the hosts vary from class to class, and present compelling evidence that the emission lines in the majority of LINER-like systems in the SDSS are not powered by black-hole accretion. The data are fully consistent with them being galaxies whose old stars provide all the ionizing power needed to explain their line ratios and luminosities. Such retired galaxies deserve a place in the emission line taxonomy.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of IAU Symposium 267, Co-Evolution of Central Black Holes and Galaxie

Background: Diabetic nephropathy was the most frequent complication in diabetics. The prevalence in women at South East Asia country was higher than men, that different than in Europe, American and African. It\u27s a controversial thing. There was no research about the risk factors for diabetic nephropathy in women in Indonesia. Methods: The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors for stage 3-5 diabetic nephropathy in women. This research used case-control study design. The cases were women with stage 3-5 diabetic nephropathy. Sampling by consecutive sampling technique by comparing the age of the case. Data were analyzed statistically by univariate, bivariate and multivariate using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: The results of the analysis showed that the risk factors for stage 3-5 diabetic nephropathy were hyperuricemia (OR:9.6; 95%CI:1.870-45.799), lack of physical activity (OR:9.5; 95%CI:1.693-53,287), blood sugar level ≥126 mg/dl (OR:14.7; 95% CI:1.487-145.846), history of oral contraceptive use (OR:7.3; 95%CI:1.254-42.716) and history of obesity (OR:8.9; 95%CI:1.195-65.766).Conclusion: It is recommended for diabetics people to control uric acid levels, fasting blood glucose, body weight and does enough physical activity. For oral contraceptives users it is recommended to consult with a doctor during consumption

Leprosy is a communicable disease that can cause permanent physical deformities. According to data from Health Department of Blora District, it was known that Public Health Center of Kunduran and Bogorejo had the highest new cases, with an increasing trend during the last 3 years. Those two PHCs still had 'high' grade 2 disability compared with national target. This research aimed to describe some factors related to the occurrence of disability in leprosy. This research is a descriptive observational with cross sectional design. Population of this research are 83 people affected by leprosy, registered in two PHCs during the last 3 years. These results indicated that the proportion of disability is higher in lepers with non productive age (38,5%), male (32,0%), having low education (36,8%), having good knowledge (55,6%), having no job (55,6%), multibacillary leprosy (36,5%), experiencing lepra reaction (50,0%), having delay of treatment >1 year (44,4%), having nerve impairment (100,0%), doing wound care (100,0%), and without support of family members (33,3%). This research concluded that the proportion of disability found higher in lepers with non productive age, male, having low education, having good knowledge, having no job, having multibacillary leprosy, experiencing lepra reaction, having delay of treatment >1 year, having nerve impairment, doing wound care, and without support of family members. This research suggest to the PHCs to give more counseling and training to the lepers about wound care and provide them tools to do this. Family members are expected to oversee the lepers when consuming MDT and reminds them to complete the treatment
