Suppose that M is a fibered three-manifold whose fiber is a surface of
positive genus with one boundary component. Assume that M is not a semi-bundle.
We show that infinitely many fillings of M along dM are virtually Haken. It
follows that infinitely many Dehn-surgeries of any non-trivial knot in the

Medical Countermeasures for Radiation Induced Health Effects: Reports of an Interagency Panel Session Held at the NASA Human Research Program Investigator's Workshop, January 26, 2017
An Interagency Panel Session organized by the NASA Human Research Program Space Radiation Program Element (SRPE) was held during the NASA Human Research Program (HRP) Investigators Workshop (IWS) in Galveston, Texas on January 26, 2017 to identify complementary research areas that will advance the testing and development of medical countermeasures (MCM) in support of radioprotection and radiation mitigation on the ground and in space. There were several areas of common interest identified among the various participating agencies. This report provides a summary of the topics discussed by each agency along with potential areas of intersection for mutual collaboration opportunities. Common goals included repurposing of pharmaceuticals, neutraceuticals for use as radioprotectors and/or mitigators, low-dose/chronic exposure paradigms, late effects post-radiation exposure, mixed-field exposures of gamma-neutron, performance decrements, and methods to determine individual exposure levels
CEO pay, shareholder returns, and accounting profits
We assess the impact on CEO pay (including salary, cash bonus, and benefits in kind) of changes in both accounting and shareholder returns in 99 British companies in the years 1972-89. After correcting for heterogeneity biases inherent in the standard specifications of the problem, we find a strong positive relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in shareholder returns, and no statistically significant relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in accounting returns. Differences between firms in long-term average profitability do appear to have a substantial effect on CEO pay, while differences between firms in shareholder returns add nothing to the within-firm pay dynamics.These findings call into question the rationale for explicitly share-based incentive schemes
Inside the Music Classroom: Deaf Students
Many students in the music classroom have normal hearing, but we do see some classrooms that have students who are deaf either sing or perform. Many deaf students use cochlear implants for their daily lives, but some do not use cochlear implants and still do well in the music classroom. There are many students who think that family involvement is important to those with cochlear implants. The parents should be aware of that the sound quality from a student who uses CI is not the same as a student who has normal hearing. Single-Sided deafness is one of the types of deafness that many students can experience using cochlear implants, which can affect a student who wants to appreciate music. There are ways to help students who are deaf and use cochlear implants, the first one is rhythmic training, which helps students improve on speech and music behavior. Another way to help students who use cochlear implants, is to use a singing proficiency to help the central auditory system by music training

The impact of electronic records on patient safety : a qualitative study
BACKGROUND: Our aim was to explore NHS staff perceptions and experiences of the impact on patient safety of introducing a maternity system. METHODS: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 members of NHS staff who represented a variety of staff groups (doctors, midwives, health care assistants), staff grades (consultant and midwife grades) and wards within a maternity unit. Participants represented a single maternity unit at a NHS teaching hospital in the North of England. Interviews were conducted during the first 12 months of the system being implemented and were analysed thematically. RESULTS: Participants perceived there to be an elevated risk to patient safety during the system's implementation. The perceived risks were attributed to a range of social and technical factors. For example, poor system design and human error which resulted in an increased potential for missing information and inputting error. CONCLUSIONS: The first 12 months of introducing the maternity system was perceived to and in some cases had already caused actual risk to patient safety. Trusts throughout the NHS are facing increasing pressure to become paperless and should be aware of the potential adverse impacts on patient safety that can occur when introducing electronic systems. Given the potential for increased risk identified, recommendations for further research and for NHS trusts introducing electronic systems are proposed
