Enabling Future Sustainability Transitions: An Urban Metabolism Approach to Los Angeles Pincetl et al. Enabling Future Sustainability Transitions
Summary: This synthesis article presents an overview of an urban metabolism (UM) approach using mixed methods and multiple sources of data for Los Angeles, California. We examine electric energy use in buildings and greenhouse gas emissions from electricity, and calculate embedded infrastructure life cycle effects, water use and solid waste streams in an attempt to better understand the urban flows and sinks in the Los Angeles region (city and county). This quantification is being conducted to help policy-makers better target energy conservation and efficiency programs, pinpoint best locations for distributed solar generation, and support the development of policies for greater environmental sustainability. It provides a framework to which many more UM flows can be added to create greater understanding of the study area's resource dependencies. Going forward, together with policy analysis, UM can help untangle the complex intertwined resource dependencies that cities must address as they attempt to increase their environmental sustainability
Marine fisheries of the north-east coast of India during 2008
The north-east region of India comprises of the
states of West Bengal and Orissa. There are about
100 landing centres distributed in these two coastal
states, of which most of them record seasonal fishing.
The estimated marine fish landings in this region was
4.83 lakh t in 2008, which formed about 15% of the
total ‘all India landings’
Parenting practices in pregnancy smokers compared to non smokers
BACKGROUND: The present investigation compared parenting practices in a sample of preschoolers whose mothers reported smoking during pregnancy versus those who did not. METHODS: A sample of n = 216, 3.0- to 5.11-year-old children, participants in an ongoing longitudinal study, was separated into those reportedly exposed to smoking in utero and those who were not. Parenting practices were compared between the two groups, using T-tests and exact logistic regressions. Multiple linear regressions and multivariate logistic regressions were used to examine the association between smoking status and parenting, controlling for variables also known to be associated with parenting practices. RESULTS: Current study findings suggest that smoking during pregnancy is associated with harsh parenting practices. CONCLUSIONS: Study results highlight the possible role of parenting in disruptive outcomes well-known in toddlers exposed to nicotine in utero and have implications for targeting early interventions in these populations

Effect of tropical monsoon on fishery abundance of Indian squid (Uroteuthis (Photololigo) duvaucelii)
Indian squid, Uroteuthis (Photololigo) duvaucelii (Loliginidae) constitute
an important component of the inshore cephalopod fisheries
along the eastern Arabian Sea. Local environmental variation plays
an important role in species–environment interactions in neritic
squids, which inhabit nearshore/coastal waters. Such ‘active’ and
‘passive’ responses of squids to environmental changes is crucial in
understanding their relationships and influence on the biological
processes, distribution and abundance of the fast-growing shortlived
coastal loliginids. The empirical relationship between squid
abundance and the variability in rainfall and sea surface temperature
(SST) were explored in a tropical monsoon fishery. Monthly catch
rates (catch per fishing hour) of squids in commercial trawl during
1987–2009 were used as the abundance index. Linear regression
models with ARIMA errors were fitted with catch per unit hour time
series as dependent variable and rainfall and SST as exogenous
variables. While rainfall was observed to have a negative effect on
squid abundance, the SST recorded a positive impact. ARIMA models
provided satisfactory fit to observed data and forecast of 22 months.
Given that the squid life-cycle is a function of their environment, this
result is relevant in forecasting squid biomass for themanagement of
tropical monsoon fisheries

Marine ecosystems comprises of diverse organisms
and their ambient abiotic components in varied
relationships leading to an ecosystem functioning.
These relationships provides the services that are
essential for marine organisms to sustain in the nature.
The studies examining the structure and functioning
of these relationships remains unclear and hence
understanding and modelling of the ecological
functioning is imperative in the context of the threats
different ecosystem components are facing. The relationship between marine
population and their environment is complex and is subjected to fluctuations
which affects the bottom level of an ecosystem pyramid to higher trophic
levels. Understanding the energy flow within the marine ecosystems with
the help of primary to secondary producers and secondary consumers are
potentially important when assessing such states and changes in these
environments.
Many of the physiological changes are known to affect the key functional
group, ie. the species or group of organisms, which play an important role
in the health of the ecosystem. In marine environment, phytoplankton are
the main functional forms which serves as the base of marine food web.
Any change in the phytoplankton community structure may lead to alteration
in the composition, size and structure of the entire ecosystem. Hence, it is
critical to understand how these effects may scale up to population,
communities, and entire marine ecosystem. Such changes are difficult to
predict, particularly when more than one trophic level is affected. The
identification and quantification of indicators of changes in ecosystem
functioning and the knowledge base generated will provide a suitable way
of bridging issues related to a specific ecosystem. New and meaningful
indicators, derived from our current understanding of marine ecosystem
functioning, can be used for assessing the impact of these changes and can
be used as an aid in promoting responsible fisheries in marine ecosystems.
Phytoplantkon is an indicator determining the colour of open Ocean. In
recent years, new technologies have emerged which involves multidisciplinary
activities including biogeochemistry and its dynamics affecting
higher trophic levels including fishery. The winter school proposed will
provide the insights into background required for such an approach involving
teaching the theory, practical, analysis and interpretation techniques in
understanding the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems from
ground truth measurements as well as from satellite remote sensing data.
This is organized with the full funding support from Indian council of
Agricultural Research (ICAR) New Delhi and the 25 participants who are
attending this programme has been selected after scrutiny of their
applications based on their bio-data. The participants are from different
States across Indian subcontinent covering north, east, west and south.
They are serving as academicians such as Professors/ scientists and in similar
posts. The training will be a feather in their career and will enable them to
do their academic programmes in a better manner. Selected participants
will be scrutinized initially to understand their knowledge level and classes
will be oriented based on this. In addition, all of them will be provided with
an e-manual based on the classes. All selected participants are provided
with their travel and accommodation grants. The faculty include the scientists
who developed this technology, those who are practicing it and few user
groups who do their research in related areas. The programme is coordinated
by the Fishery Resources Assessment Division of CMFRI. This programme
will generate a team of elite academicians who can contribute to sustainable
management of marine ecosystem and they will further contribute to
capacity building in the sector by training many more interested researchers
in the years to come
Marine fisheries of the north-east coast of India during 2009-2010
The states of Odisha and West Bengal
constituting the north-east coast of India has a
coastline of 638 km. The coastal area is cycloneprone
and is worst affected during the south-west
monsoon. The total number of marine fish landing
centres in north-east coast is 132, of which
73 belonged to Odisha. According to Marine
Fisheries Census 2010, there are 3.95 lakh fisherfolk
directly engaged in actual fishing, fish seed collection
and fishing allied activities in this coast
Integration of external and internal dosimetry in Switzerland
Individual monitoring regulations in Switzerland are based on the ICRP60 recommendations. The annual limit of 20 mSv for the effective dose applies to the sum of external and internal radiation. External radiation is monitored monthly or quarterly with TLD, DIS or CR-39 dosemeters by 10 approved external dosimetry services and reported as Hp(10) and Hp(0.07). Internal monitoring is done in two steps. At the workplace, simple screening measurements are done frequently in order to recognise a possible incorporation. If a nuclide dependent activity threshold is exceeded then one of the seven approved dosimetry services for internal radiation does an incorporation measurement to assess the committed effective dose E50. The dosimetry services report all the measured or assessed dose values to the employer and to the National Dose Registry. The employer records the annually accumulated dose values into the individual dose certificate of the occupationally exposed person, both the external dose Hp(10) and the internal dose E50 as well as the total effective dose E = Hp(10)+E50. Based on the national dose registry an annual report on the dosimetry in Switzerland is published which contains the statistics for the total effective dose, as well as separate statistics for external and internal exposur
