An effective mass theorem for the bidimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field
We study the limiting behavior of a singularly perturbed
Schr\"odinger-Poisson system describing a 3-dimensional electron gas strongly
confined in the vicinity of a plane and subject to a strong uniform
magnetic field in the plane of the gas. The coupled effects of the confinement
and of the magnetic field induce fast oscillations in time that need to be
averaged out. We obtain at the limit a system of 2-dimensional Schr\"odinger
equations in the plane , coupled through an effective selfconsistent
electrical potential. In the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field, the
electron mass is modified by the field, as the result of an averaging of the
cyclotron motion. The main tools of the analysis are the adaptation of the
second order long-time averaging theory of ODEs to our PDEs context, and the
use of a Sobolev scale adapted to the confinement operator

Two outbreaks of mixed etiology associated with central venous catheters inserted by phlebotomy in critical neonates
Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci are the main cause of sepsis in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Central venous catheters (CVCs) are an important part of critical neonates' treatment and are associated with sepsis. The aim of this study was to investigate two outbreaks caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis associated with CVC inserted by phlebotomy in critical neonates. The surveillance was performed from January 2001 to December 2005 at the Brazilian NICU. The genotypic analysis of oxacillin susceptible S. aureus (OSSA) and oxacillin resistant S. epidermidis (ORSE) was performed based on pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Staphylococcus was the most frequent pathogen (65.8%) with highest incidence of CoNS (59.9%) followed by S. aureus (40.1%). During the five years of surveillance, there were two outbreaks detected, occurred in January-February/02 and August/02 and confirmed by PFGE analysis. The predisposing factors for infection corresponding to both outbreaks were: age <7 days, hospitalization > 7 days, and use of polyethylene CVC through dissection of vein (phlebotomy). This is the first relate of staphylococcal outbreaks associated with CVC inserted by phlebotomy in NICU. PFGE showed polyclonal spread of OSSA during both epidemic and endemic period, and two monoclonal outbreaks of ORSE in the same epidemic period of OSSA
Graphene-based photovoltaic cells for near-field thermal energy conversion
Thermophotovoltaic devices are energy-conversion systems generating an
electric current from the thermal photons radiated by a hot body. In far field,
the efficiency of these systems is limited by the thermodynamic
Schockley-Queisser limit corresponding to the case where the source is a black
body. On the other hand, in near field, the heat flux which can be transferred
to a photovoltaic cell can be several orders of magnitude larger because of the
contribution of evanescent photons. This is particularly true when the source
supports surface polaritons. Unfortunately, in the infrared where these systems
operate, the mismatch between the surface-mode frequency and the semiconductor
gap reduces drastically the potential of this technology. Here we show that
graphene-based hybrid photovoltaic cells can significantly enhance the
generated power paving the way to a promising technology for an intensive
production of electricity from waste heat.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Determination of the Strong Coupling \boldmath{\as} from hadronic Event Shapes and NNLO QCD predictions using JADE Data
Event Shape Data from annihilation into hadrons collected by the
JADE experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 14 GeV and 44 GeV are used
to determine the strong coupling . QCD predictions complete to
next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), alternatively combined with resummed
next-to-leading-log-approximation (NNLO+NLLA) calculations, are used. The
combined value from six different event shape observables at the six JADE
centre-of-mass energies using the NNLO calculations is
= 0.1210 +/- 0.0007(stat.) +/- 0.0021(expt.) +/- 0.0044(had.)
+/- 0.0036(theo.) and with the NNLO+NLLA calculations the combined value is
= 0.1172 +/- 0.0006(stat.) +/- 0.0020(expt.) +/- 0.0035(had.) +/-
0.0030(theo.) . The stability of the NNLO and NNLO+NLLA results with respect to
missing higher order contributions, studied by variations of the
renormalisation scale, is improved compared to previous results obtained with
NLO+NLLA or with NLO predictions only. The observed energy dependence of
agrees with the QCD prediction of asymptotic freedom and excludes

Naturalness and Fine Tuning in the NMSSM: Implications of Early LHC Results
We study the fine tuning in the parameter space of the semi-constrained
NMSSM, where most soft Susy breaking parameters are universal at the GUT scale.
We discuss the dependence of the fine tuning on the soft Susy breaking
parameters M_1/2 and m0, and on the Higgs masses in NMSSM specific scenarios
involving large singlet-doublet Higgs mixing or dominant Higgs-to-Higgs decays.
Whereas these latter scenarios allow a priori for considerably less fine tuning
than the constrained MSSM, the early LHC results rule out a large part of the
parameter space of the semi-constrained NMSSM corresponding to low values of

Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry parameter αb and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Λ0b→J/ψ+Λ0 with the ATLAS detector
A measurement of the parity-violating decay asymmetry parameter, αb, and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Λb0→J/ψ(μ+μ-)Λ0(pπ-) is reported. The analysis is based on 1400 Λb0 and Λ¯b0 baryons selected in 4.6 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. By combining the Λb0 and Λ¯b0 samples under the assumption of CP conservation, the value of αb is measured to be 0.30±0.16(stat)±0.06(syst). Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb^-1 of pp collision data at sqrt(s)=7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96 +0.26 -0.30 at Q^2=1.9 GeV^2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio sigma(W^+ + bar{c})/sigma(W^- + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s-bar{s} quark asymmetry.Fil: ATLAS Collaboration, G. Search for scalar charm quark pair production in pp collisions at root s =8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The results of a dedicated search for pair production of scalar partners of charm quarks are reported. The search is based on an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search is performed using events with large missing transverse momentum and at least two jets, where the two leading jets are each tagged as originating from c quarks. Events containing isolated electrons or muons are vetoed. In an R-parity-conserving minimal supersymmetric scenario in which a single scalar-charm state is kinematically accessible, and where it decays exclusively into a charm quark and a neutralino, 95% confidence-level upper limits are obtained in the scalar-charm-neutralino mass plane such that, for neutralino masses below 200 GeV, scalar-charm masses up to 490 GeV are excluded.G. Centrality and rapidity dependence of inclusive jet production in root sNN=5.02 TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector
Measurements of the centrality and rapidity dependence of inclusive jet production in √sNN = 5.02 TeV proton–lead (p+Pb) collisions and the jet cross-section √s = 2.76 TeV proton–proton collisions are presented. These quantities are measured in datasets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 27.8 nb⁻¹and 4.0 pb⁻¹, respectively, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2013. The p+Pb collision centrality was characterised using the total transverse energy measured in the pseudorapidity interval −4.9<η<−3.2 in the direction of the lead beam. Results are presented for the double-differential per-collision yields as a function of jet rapidity and transverse momentum (pT) for minimum-bias and centrality-selected p+Pb collisions, and are compared to the jet rate from the geometric expectation. The total jet yield in minimum-bias events is slightly enhanced above the expectation in a pT-dependent manner but is consistent with the expectation within uncertainties. The ratios of jet spectra from different centrality selections show a strong modification of jet production at all pT at forward rapidities and for large pTpT at mid-rapidity, which manifests as a suppression of the jet yield in central events and an enhancement in peripheral events. These effects imply that the factorisation between hard and soft processes is violated at an unexpected level in proton–nucleus collisions. Furthermore, the modifications at forward rapidities are found to be a function of the total jet energy only, implying that the violations may have a simple dependence on the hard parton–parton kinematics.G.
