A geometric Newton method for Oja's vector field
Newton's method for solving the matrix equation runs
up against the fact that its zeros are not isolated. This is due to a symmetry
of by the action of the orthogonal group. We show how
differential-geometric techniques can be exploited to remove this symmetry and
obtain a ``geometric'' Newton algorithm that finds the zeros of . The
geometric Newton method does not suffer from the degeneracy issue that stands
in the way of the original Newton method
Wide Field Imaging. I. Applications of Neural Networks to object detection and star/galaxy classification
[Abriged] Astronomical Wide Field Imaging performed with new large format CCD
detectors poses data reduction problems of unprecedented scale which are
difficult to deal with traditional interactive tools. We present here NExt
(Neural Extractor): a new Neural Network (NN) based package capable to detect
objects and to perform both deblending and star/galaxy classification in an
automatic way. Traditionally, in astronomical images, objects are first
discriminated from the noisy background by searching for sets of connected
pixels having brightnesses above a given threshold and then they are classified
as stars or as galaxies through diagnostic diagrams having variables choosen
accordingly to the astronomer's taste and experience. In the extraction step,
assuming that images are well sampled, NExt requires only the simplest a priori
definition of "what an object is" (id est, it keeps all structures composed by
more than one pixels) and performs the detection via an unsupervised NN
approaching detection as a clustering problem which has been thoroughly studied
in the artificial intelligence literature. In order to obtain an objective and
reliable classification, instead of using an arbitrarily defined set of
features, we use a NN to select the most significant features among the large
number of measured ones, and then we use their selected features to perform the
classification task. In order to optimise the performances of the system we
implemented and tested several different models of NN. The comparison of the
NExt performances with those of the best detection and classification package
known to the authors (SExtractor) shows that NExt is at least as effective as

d0 Ferromagnetic Interface Between Non-magnetic Perovskites
We use computational and experimental methods to study d0 ferromagnetism at a
charge- imbalanced interface between two perovskites. In SrTiO3/KTaO3
superlattice calculations, the charge imbalance introduces holes in the SrTiO3
layer, inducing a d0 ferromagnetic half-metallic 2D electron gas at the
interface oxygen 2p orbitals. The charge imbalance overrides doping by
vacancies at realistic concentrations. Varying the constituent materials shows
ferromagnetism to be a gen- eral property of hole-type d0 perovskite
interfaces. Atomically sharp epitaxial d0 SrTiO3/KTaO3, SrTiO3 /KNbO3 and
SrTiO3 /NaNbO3 interfaces are found to exhibit ferromagnetic hysteresis at room
temperature. We suggest the behavior is due to high density of states and
exchange coupling at the oxygen t1g band in comparison with the more studied d
band t2g symmetry electron gas.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Canonical analysis based on scatter matrices.
In this paper, the influence functions and limiting distributions of the canonical correlations and coefficients based on affine equivariant scatter matrices are developed for elliptically symmetric distributions. General formulas for limiting variances and covariances of the canonical correlations and canonical vectors based on scatter matrices are obtained. Also the use of the so-called shape matrices in canonical analysis is investigated. The scatter and shape matrices based on the affine equivariant Sign Covariance Matrix as well as the Tyler's shape matrix serve as examples. Their finite sample and limiting efficiencies are compared to those of the Minimum Covariance Determinant estimators and S-estimator through theoretical and simulation studies. Molecular basis of oocyte-paracrine signalling that promotes granulosa cell proliferation
Copyright © 2006 Company of BiologistsOocytes regulate follicle growth by secreting paracrine growth factors that act on neighbouring granulosa cells (GCs). Those factors identified to date are mainly members of the transforming growth factor-ß (TGFß) superfamily, but little is known about which specific receptor/signalling system(s) they employ. This study was conducted to determine the requisite pathways utilised by oocytes to promote GC proliferation. We used an established oocyte-secreted mitogen bioassay, where denuded mouse oocytes are co-cultured with mural GCs. Oocytes, growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF9), TGFß1 and activin-A all promoted GC DNA synthesis, but bone-morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6) did not. Subsequently, we tested the capacity of various TGFß superfamily receptor ectodomains (ECD) to neutralise oocyte- or specific growth factor-stimulated GC proliferation. The BMP type-II receptor (BMPR-II) ECD antagonised oocyte and GDF9 bioactivity dose-dependently, but had no or minimal effect on TGFß1 and activin-A bioactivity, demonstrating its specificity. The TGFßR-II, activinR-IIA and activinR-IIB ECDs all failed to neutralise oocyte- or GDF9-stimulated GC DNA synthesis, whereas they did antagonise the activity of their respective native ligands. An activin receptor-like kinase (ALK) 4/5/7 inhibitor, SB431542, also antagonised both oocyte and GDF9 bioactivity in a dose-dependent manner. Consistent with these findings, oocytes, GDF9 and TGFß1 all activated SMAD2/3 reporter constructs in transfected GC, and led to phosphorylation of SMAD2 proteins in treated cells. Surprisingly, oocytes did not activate the SMAD1/5/8 pathway in transfected GCs although exogenous BMP6 did. This study indicates that oocyte paracrine factors primarily utilise a similar signalling pathway first identified for GDF9 that employs an unusual combination of TGFß superfamily receptors, the BMPR-II and a SMAD2/3 stimulatory ALK (4, 5 or 7), for transmitting their mitogenic actions in GC. Solar-like oscillations in the G9.5 subgiant beta Aquilae
An interesting asteroseismic target is the G9.5 IV solar-like star beta Aql.
This is an ideal target for asteroseismic investigations, because precise
astrometric measurements are available from Hipparcos that greatly help in
constraining the theoretical interpretation of the results. The star was
observed during six nights in August 2009 by means of the high-resolution
\'echelle spectrograph SARG operating with the TNG 3.58 m Italian telescope on
the Canary Islands, exploiting the iodine cell technique. We present the result
and the detailed analysis of high-precision radial velocity measurements, where
the possibility of detecting time individual p-mode frequencies for the first
and deriving their corresponding asymptotic values will be discussed. The
time-series analysis carried out from \sim 800 collected spectra shows the
typical p-mode frequency pattern with a maximum centered at 416 \muHz. In the
frequency range 300 - 600 \muHz we identified for the first time six high S/N
(\gtrsim 3.5) modes with l = 0,2 and 11 < n < 16 and three possible candidates
for mixed modes (l = 1), although the p-mode identification for this type of
star appears to be quite difficult owing to a substantial presence of avoided
crossings. The large frequency separation and the surface term from the set of
identified modes by means of the asymptotic relation were derived for the first
time. Their values are \Delta \nu = 29.56 \pm 0.10 \muHz and \epsilon = 1.29
\pm 0.04, consistent with expectations. The most likely value for the small

Spectroscopic and Photometric Study of the Contact Binary BO CVn
We present the results of the study of the contact binary system BO CVn. We
have obtained physical parameters of the components based on combined analysis
of new, multi-color light curves and spectroscopic mass ratio. This is the
first time the latter has been determined for this object. We derived the
contact configuration for the system with a very high filling factor of about
88 percent. We were able to reproduce the observed light curve, namely the flat
bottom of the secondary minimum, only if a third light has been added into the
list of free parameters. The resulting third light contribution is significant,
about 20-24 percent, while the absolute parameters of components are: M1=1.16,
M2=0.39, R1=1.62 and R2=1.00 (in solar units). The O-C diagram shows an upward
parabola which, under the conservative mass transfer assumption, would
correspond to a mass transfer rate of dM/dt = 6.3 \times 10-8M\odot/yr, matter
being transferred from the less massive component to the more massive one. No
cyclic, short-period variations have been found in the O-C diagram (but

Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars. IX
Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity
variations are presented for the eighth set of ten close binary systems: AB
And, V402 Aur, V445 Cep, V2082 Cyg, BX Dra, V918 Her, V502 Oph, V1363 Ori, KP
Peg, V335 Peg. Half of the systems (V445 Cep, V2082 Cyg, V918 Her, V1363 Ori,
V335 Peg) were discovered photometrically by the Hipparcos mission and all
systems are double-lined (SB2) contact binaries. The broadening function method
permitted improvement of the orbital elements for AB And and V502 Oph. The
other systems have been observed for radial velocity variations for the first
time; in this group are five bright (V<7.5) binaries: V445 Cep, V2082 Cyg, V918
Her, KP Peg and V335 Peg. Several of the studied systems are prime candidates

Searches for violation of fundamental time reversal and space reflection symmetries in solid state experiments
The electric dipole moment (EDM) of a particle violates both time reversal
(T) and space reflection (P) symmetries. There have been recent suggestions for
searches of the electron EDM using solid state experiments [1,2]. These
experiments could improve the sensitivity compared to present atomic and
molecular experiments by several orders of magnitude. In the present paper we
calculate the expected effect. We also suggest that this kind of experiment is
sensitive to T,P-violation in nuclear forces and calculate effects caused by
the nuclear Schiff moment.
The compounds under consideration contain magnetic Gd ions and oxygen
O ions. We demonstrate that the main mechanism for the T,P-odd effects
is related to the penetration of the Oxygen 2p-electrons to the Gd core. All
the effects are related to the deformation of the crystal lattice.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
The Palomar Testbed Interferometer Calibrator Catalog
The Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) archive of observations between 1998
and 2005 is examined for objects appropriate for calibration of optical
long-baseline interferometer observations - stars that are predictably
point-like and single. Approximately 1,400 nights of data on 1,800 objects were
examined for this investigation. We compare those observations to an
intensively studied object that is a suitable calibrator, HD217014, and
statistically compare each candidate calibrator to that object by computing
both a Mahalanobis distance and a Principal Component Analysis. Our hypothesis
is that the frequency distribution of visibility data associated with
calibrator stars differs from non-calibrator stars such as binary stars.
Spectroscopic binaries resolved by PTI, objects known to be unsuitable for
calibrator use, are similarly tested to establish detection limits of this
approach. From this investigation, we find more than 350 observed stars
suitable for use as calibrators (with an additional being
rejected), corresponding to sky coverage for PTI. This approach
is noteworthy in that it rigorously establishes calibration sources through a
traceable, empirical methodology, leveraging the predictions of spectral energy
distribution modeling but also verifying it with the rich body of PTI's on-sky
