AOIPS water resources data management system
A geocoded data management system applicable for hydrological applications was designed to demonstrate the utility of the Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (AOIPS) for hydrological applications. Within that context, the geocoded hydrology data management system was designed to take advantage of the interactive capability of the AOIPS hardware. Portions of the Water Resource Data Management System which best demonstrate the interactive nature of the hydrology data management system were implemented on the AOIPS. A hydrological case study was prepared using all data supplied for the Bear River watershed located in northwest Utah, southeast Idaho, and western Wyoming
Children with complex support needs in healthcare settings for prolonged periods: their numbers, characteristics and experiences
This report details the findings of research conducted in England and Scotland to identify how many children with complex support needs are spending longer than one month in healthcare settings in Scotland and England, how and why they are in hospital, why they have not been discharged home or to appropriate alternative community-based facilities, and how well the hospital or healthcare setting is meeting their emotional, social and educational needs. It finds that many of these children could and should be discharged but are not, for a variety of reasons: primarily the lack of appropriate resources in the community and poor discharge planning processes, coupled with the inability of their families to manage their care and supervision without intensive support. Hospitals and healthcare settings in many cases are not meeting their needs and these children are being denied the protection offered by UK legislation governing children's rights and welfare
Base sequence dependent sliding of proteins on DNA
The possibility that the sliding motion of proteins on DNA is influenced by
the base sequence through a base pair reading interaction, is considered.
Referring to the case of the T7 RNA-polymerase, we show that the protein should
follow a noise-influenced sequence-dependent motion which deviate from the
standard random walk usually assumed. The general validity and the implications

Exploring opportunities around climate-smart breeding for future food and nutrition security
There is a 95% chance that warming will exceed 2°C by the end of the century (Raftery et al. 2017). Global crop productivity is projected to fall by 5-10 % per degree of warming (Challinor et al. 2014), with even greater losses likely for some crops in some areas. The challenge of meeting future food demand is increasing, and climate change is already diminishing our ability to adapt through crop breeding (Challinor et al. 2016; Aggarwal et al. 2019). Recent research is suggesting that increases in climate variability are already affecting the number of food-insecure people, and that increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations may affect the nutrient content of some food staples, with serious implications for food and nutrition security (Smith and Myers 2018).
New crop varieties will be needed that can deliver higher yields as well as possessing the ability to withstand heat and greater tolerances for the secondary effects of a warmer world, such as increased pressures from drought, water-logging, pests and diseases, and reduced nutritional quality due to higher levels of CO2. The systems for accelerated delivery of climate-resilient varieties into food producers’ hands need to be massively upgraded (Cramer 2018). Innovative holistic breeding strategies for multiple traits will be needed that embrace the full pipeline from trait discovery to varietal deployment and seed system development
Fluorescence resonance energy transfer between organic dyes adsorbed onto nano-clay and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films
In this communication we investigate two dyes N,N' -dioctadecyl thiacyanine
perchlorate (NK) and octadecyl rhodamine B chloride (RhB) in Langmuir and
Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films with or with out a synthetic clay laponite.
Observed changes in isotherms of RhB in absence and presence of nano-clay
platelets indicate the incorporation of clay platelets onto RhB-clay hybrid
films. AFM image confirms the incorporation of clay in hybrid films. FRET was
observed in clay dispersion and LB films with and without clay. Efficiency of

Finality revived: powers and intentionality
Proponents of physical intentionality argue that the classic hallmarks of intentionality highlighted by Brentano are also found in purely physical powers. Critics worry that this idea is metaphysically obscure at best, and at worst leads to panpsychism or animism. I examine the debate in detail, finding both confusion and illumination in the physical intentionalist thesis. Analysing a number of the canonical features of intentionality, I show that they all point to one overarching phenomenon of which both the mental and the physical are kinds, namely finality. This is the finality of ‘final causes’, the long-discarded idea of universal action for an end to which recent proponents of physical intentionality are in fact pointing whether or not they realise it. I explain finality in terms of the concept of specific indifference, arguing that in the case of the mental, specific indifference is realised by the process of abstraction, which has no correlate in the case of physical powers. This analysis, I conclude, reveals both the strength and weakness of rational creatures such as us, as well as demystifying (albeit only partly) the way in which powers work

is decidable. More precisely, for every fixed variety in the Trotter-Weil
Hierarchy, our approach yields an algorithm in nondeterministic logarithmic
space (NL). In addition, we provide deterministic polynomial time algorithms
which are more efficient than straightforward translations of the
NL-algorithms. As an application of our results, we show that separability by
the so-called corners of the Trotter-Weil Hierarchy is witnessed by
-terms (this property is also known as -reducibility). In
particular, the separation problem for the corners of the Trotter-Weil
Hierarchy is decidable
