    Fighting Zoonotic, Rabies and Public Health in Colonial India

    Rabies is the oldest Zoonotic diseases in the world and one of the most important Zoonotic diseases in India. It was one of the most difficult problems confronted both by the medical and veterinary authorities in colonial India. The disease is transmitted from animal to animal and from animal to man through saliva. More than 90 per cent of cases of human rabies are transmitted by dogs which was a major concern of public health. A few British officials and soldiers were bitten by dogs during the colonial period. As a result, they suffered from rabies. As ownerless dogs were infested all through the country, the disease prevailed largely at that time. Gradually, rabies became a problem to the colonial Government. Louis Pasteur obtained his first success against rabies through vaccination in 1885. At that time, Dr. Lingard, Bacteriologist, had proposed to introduce a system of anti-rabies vaccination in the Bacteriological laboratory at Poona. A similar proposal was also submitted by J.H.B. Hallen, a civil Surgeon in 1890. Later, five institutes were established in India for anti-rabies treatment. Gradually rabies patients were treated at pasture institute. Thus, this paper examines impact of rabies, treatment and veterinary public health policy in colonial India.     Cosmological solutions and finite time singularities in Finslerian geometry

    We consider a very general scenario of our universe where its geometry is characterized by the Finslerian structure on the underlying spacetime manifold, a generalization of the Riemannian geometry. Now considering a general energy-momentum tensor for matter sector, we derive the gravitational field equations in such spacetime. Further, to depict the cosmological dynamics in such spacetime proposing an interesting equation of state identified by a sole parameter γ\gamma which for isotropic limit is simply the barotropic equation of state p=(γ1)ρp= (\gamma- 1) \rho (γR\gamma \in \mathbb{R} being the barotropic index), we solve the background dynamics. The dynamics offers several possibilities depending on this sole parameter as follows - (i) only an exponential expansion, or (ii) a finite time past singualrity (big bang) with late accelerating phase, or (iii) a nonsingular universe exhibiting an accelerating scenario at late time which finally predicts a big rip type singularity. We also discuss several energy conditions and the possibility of cosmic bounce. Finally, we establish the first law of thermodynamics in such spacetime.Comment: Accepted in Mod.Phys.Lett.

    The Finslerian quantum cosmology

    We present a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) quantum cosmological model within the framework of Finslerian geometry. In this work, we consider a specific fluid. We obtain the corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt equation as the usual constraint equation as well as Schr\"odinger equation following Dirac, although the approaches yields the same equation of time independent equation for the wave function of the universe. We provide exact classical and quantum mechanical solutions. We use the eigenfunctions to study the time evolution of the expectation value of the scale factor. Finally we discuss the physical meaning of the results.Comment: To appear in Can.J.Phy

    Thin Shell Wormhole in Heterotic String Theory

    Using 'Cut and Paste' technique, we develop a thin shell wormhole in heterotic string theory. We determine the surface stresses, which are localized in the shell, by using Darmois-Israel formalism.     Vacuumless topological defects in Lyra geometry

    Few years ago, Cho and Vilenkin have proposed that topological defects can arise in symmetry breaking models without having degenerate vacua. These types of defects are known as vacuumless defects. In the present work, the gravitational field of a vacuumless global string and global monopole have been investigated in the context of Lyra geometry. We find the metric of the vacuumless global string and global monopole in the weak field approximations. It has been shown that the vacuumless global string can have repulsive whereas global monopole exerts attractive gravitational effects on a test particle.     The need for an early anti-neutrino run of NOvA

    The moderately large value of \ty, measured recently by reactor experiments, is very welcome news for the future neutrino experiments. In particular, the \nova experiment, with 3 years each of ν\nu and \anu runs, will be able to determine the mass hierarchy if one of the following two favourable combinations is true: normal hierarchy with -180^\circ \leq \dcp \leq 0 or inverted hierarchy with 0\leq \dcp \leq 180^\circ. In this report, we study the hierarchy reach of the first 3 years of \nova data. Since \sin^2 2 \tz is measured to be non-maximal, \tz can be either in the lower or higher octant. Pure ν\nu data is affected by \ty-hierarchy and octant-hierarchy degeneracies, which limit the hierarchy sensitivity of such data. A combination of ν\nu and \anu data is not subject to these degeneracies and hence has much better hierarchy discrimination capability. We find that, with a 3 year ν\nu run, hierarchy determination is possible for only two of the four octant-hierarchy combinations. Equal 1.5 year runs in ν\nu and \anu modes give good hierarchy sensitivity for all the four combinations
