Reconstruction of Quark Mass Matrices with Weak Basis Texture Zeroes from Experimental Input

All quark mass matrices with texture zeroes obtained through weak basis transformations are confronted with the experimental data. The reconstruction of the quark mass matrices M_u and M_d at the electroweak scale is performed in a weak basis where the matrices are Hermitian and have a maximum of three vanishing elements. The same procedure is also accomplished for the Yukawa coupling matrices at the grand unification scale in the context of the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension as well as of the two Higgs doublet model. The analysis of all viable power structures on the quark Yukawa coupling matrices that could naturally appear from a Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism is also presented.Comment: RevTeX4, 3 tables, 21 pages; misprints corrected and one reference adde

Renormalization and resummation in finite temperature field theories

    Get PDF
Resummation, ie. reorganization of perturbative series, can result in an inconsistent perturbation theory, unless the counterterms are reorganized in an appropriate way. In this paper two methods are presented for resummation of counterterms: one is a direct method where the necessary counterterms are constructed order by order; the other is a general one, based on renormalization group arguments. We demonstrate at one hand that, in mass independent schemes, mass resummation can be performed by gap equations renormalized prior to the substitution of the resummed mass for its argument. On the other hand it is shown that any (momentum-independent) form of mass and coupling constant resummation is compatible with renormalization, and one can explicitly construct the corresponding counterterms.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, revtex

    Semidirect product gauge group [SU(3)c×SU(2)L]U(1)Y[SU(3)_{\rm c} \times SU(2)_{\rm L}]\rtimes U(1)_{\rm Y} and quantization of hypercharge

In the Standard Model the hypercharges of quarks and leptons are not determined by the gauge group SU(3)c×SU(2)L×U(1)YSU(3)_{\rm c} \times SU(2)_{\rm L} \times U(1)_{\rm Y} alone. We show that, if we choose the semidirect product group [SU(3)c×SU(2)L]U(1)Y[SU(3)_{\rm c} \times SU(2)_{\rm L}] \rtimes U(1)_{\rm Y} as its gauge group, the hyperchages are settled to be n/6modZ  (n=0,1,3,4)n/6 \mod {\mathbb{Z}}\;(n = 0,1,3,4) . In addition, the conditions for gauge-anomaly cancellation give strong constraints. As a result, the ratios of the hypercharges are uniquely determined and the gravitational anomaly is automatically canceled. The standard charge assignment to quarks and leptons can be properly reproduced. For exotic matter fields their hypercharges are also discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 2 tables; LaTeX; typos corrected, references added or replaced, argument in Secs. 2 and 3 revised, results unchanged; to be published in Phys. Oxidizing SuperYang-Mills from (N=4,d=4) to (N=1,d=10)

We introduce superspace generalizations of the transverse derivatives to rewrite the four-dimensional N=4 Yang-Mills theory into the fully ten-dimensional N=1 Yang-Mills in light-cone form. The explicit SuperPoincare algebra is constructed and invariance of the ten-dimensional action is proved.Comment: 15 page

Large Lepton Mixings from Continuous Symmetries

    Get PDF
Within the broad context of quark-lepton unification, we investigate the implications of broken continuous family symmetries which result from requiring that in the limit of exact symmetry, the Dirac mass matrices yield hierarchical masses for the quarks and charged leptons, but lead to degenerate light neutrino masses as a consequence of the seesaw mechanism, without requiring hierarchical right-handed neutrino mass terms. Quark mixing is then naturally small and proportional to the size of the perturbation, but lepton mixing is large as a result of degenerate perturbation theory, shifted from maximal mixing by the size of the perturbation. Within this approach, we study an illustrative two-family prototype model with an SO(2) family symmetry, and discuss extensions to three-family models.Comment: 23 page

Gauge symmetry and Slavnov-Taylor identities for randomly stirred fluids

    Get PDF
The path integral for randomly forced incompressible fluids is shown to have an underlying Becchi-Rouet-Stora (BRS) symmetry as a consequence of Galilean invariance. This symmetry must be respected to have a consistent generating functional, free from both an overall infinite factor and spurious relations amongst correlation functions. We present a procedure for respecting this BRS symmetry, akin to gauge fixing in quantum field theory. Relations are derived between correlation functions of this gauge fixed, BRS symmetric theory, analogous to the Slavnov-Taylor identities of quantum field theory.Comment: 5 pages, no figures, In Press Physical Review Letters, 200

H-Band Spectroscopic Classification of OB Stars

    Get PDF
We present a new spectroscopic classification for OB stars based on H-band (1.5 micron to 1.8 micron) observations of a sample of stars with optical spectral types. Our initial sample of nine stars demonstrates that the combination of He I 1.7002 micron and H Brackett series absorption can be used to determine spectral types for stars between about O4 and B7 (to within about +/- 2 sub-types). We find that the Brackett series exhibits luminosity effects similar to the Balmer series for the B stars. This classification scheme will be useful in studies of optically obscured high mass star forming regions. In addition, we present spectra for the OB stars near 1.1 micron and 1.3 micron which may be of use in analyzing their atmospheres and winds.Comment: Accepted by AJ, 16 pages Latex (aastex4.0) including 4 figures and 2 tables. A Completely Invariant SUSY Transform of Supersymmetric QED

We study the SUSY breaking of the covariant gauge-fixing term in SUSY QED and observe that this corresponds to a breaking of the Lorentz gauge condition by SUSY. Reasoning by analogy with SUSY's violation of the Wess-Zumino gauge, we argue that the SUSY transformation, already modified to preserve Wess-Zumino gauge, should be further modified by another gauge transformation which restores the Lorentz gauge condition. We derive this modification and use the resulting transformation to derive a Ward identitiy relating the photon and photino propagators without using ghost fields. Our transformation also fulfills the SUSY algebra, modulo terms that vanish in Lorentz gauge
