Random perfect lattices and the sphere packing problem
Motivated by the search for best lattice sphere packings in Euclidean spaces
of large dimensions we study randomly generated perfect lattices in moderately
large dimensions (up to d=19 included). Perfect lattices are relevant in the
solution of the problem of lattice sphere packing, because the best lattice
packing is a perfect lattice and because they can be generated easily by an
algorithm. Their number however grows super-exponentially with the dimension so
to get an idea of their properties we propose to study a randomized version of
the algorithm and to define a random ensemble with an effective temperature in
a way reminiscent of a Monte-Carlo simulation. We therefore study the
distribution of packing fractions and kissing numbers of these ensembles and
show how as the temperature is decreased the best know packers are easily
recovered. We find that, even at infinite temperature, the typical perfect
lattices are considerably denser than known families (like A_d and D_d) and we
propose two hypotheses between which we cannot distinguish in this paper: one
in which they improve Minkowsky's bound phi\sim 2^{-(0.84+-0.06) d}, and a
competitor, in which their packing fraction decreases super-exponentially,
namely phi\sim d^{-a d} but with a very small coefficient a=0.06+-0.04. We also
find properties of the random walk which are suggestive of a glassy system
already for moderately small dimensions. We also analyze local structure of
network of perfect lattices conjecturing that this is a scale-free network in
all dimensions with constant scaling exponent 2.6+-0.1.Comment: 19 pages, 22 figure
Origin of atomic clusters during ion sputtering
Previous studies have shown that the size distributions of small clusters ( n<=40 n = number of atoms/cluster) generated by sputtering obey an inverse power law with an exponent between -8 and -4. Here we report electron microscopy studies of the size distributions of larger clusters ( n>=500) sputtered by high-energy ion impacts. These new measurements also yield an inverse power law, but one with an exponent of -2 and one independent of sputtering yield, indicating that the large clusters are produced when shock waves, generated by subsurface displacement cascades, ablate the surface

STUDY QUESTION
Are the concentrations of factors secreted by decidual natural killer (dNK) cells from pregnancies at high risk of poor spiral artery remodelling different to those secreted from pregnancies at low risk?
SUMMARY ANSWER
Expression levels of PLGF, sIL-2R, endostatin and angiogenin were significantly increased by dNK cells from high-risk pregnancies, and angiogenin and endostatin were found to alter trophoblast function.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY
During early pregnancy, maternal uterine spiral arteries are remodelled from small diameter, low-flow, high-resistance vessels into larger diameter, higher flow vessels, with low-resistance. This change is essential for the developing fetus to obtain sufficient oxygen and nutrients. dNK cells have been implicated in this process.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION
dNK cells were isolated from first trimester terminations of pregnancies (obtained with local ethical approval) screened for normal- or high-resistance index, indicative of cases least (21%) likely to have developed pre-eclampsia had the pregnancy not been terminated (n = 18 each group). Secreted factors and the effects of these on the trophoblast cell line, SGHPL-4, were assessed in vitro.
PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS
A multiplex assay was used to assess dNK cell-secreted factors. SGHPL-4 cell functions were assessed using time-lapse microscopy, 3D invasion assays, endothelial-like tube formation ability and western blot analysis.
MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE
The expression levels of PLGF (P < 0.01), sIL-2R (P < 0.01), endostatin (P < 0.05) and angiogenin (P < 0.05) were significantly increased by dNK cells from high-risk pregnancies. Endostatin significantly decreased SGHPL-4 invasion (P < 0.05), SGHPL-4 tube formation (P < 0.05) and SGHPL-4 Aktser473 phosphorylation (P < 0.05). Angiogenin significantly decreased SGHPL-4 invasion (P < 0.05), but increased SGHPL-4 tube formation (P < 0.01) and decreased SGHPL-4 Aktser473 phosphorylation (P < 0.05).
LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION
The culture of dNK cells and protein concentrations in vitro may not fully represent the in vivo situation. Although SGHPL-4 cells are extravillous trophoblast derived, further studies would be needed to confirm the roles of angiogenin and endostatin in vivo.
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS
The altered expression of secreted factors of dNK cells may contribute to pregnancy disorders associated with poor spiral artery remodelling.

understanding and Monte Carlo simulation of multi-jet final states due to hard
QCD processes at LEP, i.e. quark-antiquark plus multi-gluon and/or secondary
quark production, with particular emphasis on four-jet final states and b-quark
mass effects. Specific topics covered are: relevant developments in the main
event generators PYTHIA, HERWIG and ARIADNE; the new multi-jet generator
APACIC++; description and tuning of inclusive (all-flavour) jet rates; quark

One-dimensional phase transitions in a two-dimensional optical lattice
A phase transition for bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional anisotropic optical
lattice is considered. If the tunnelling rates in two directions are different,
the system can undergo a transition between a two-dimensional superfluid and a
one-dimensional Mott insulating array of strongly coupled tubes. The connection
to other lattice models is exploited in order to better understand the phase
transition. Critical properties are obtained using quantum Monte Carlo
calculations. These critical properties are related to correlation properties
of the bosons and a criterion for commensurate filling is established.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
Modelled dispersal patterns for wood and grass charcoal are different: implications for paleofire reconstruction
Sedimentary charcoal records provide useful perspectives on the long-term controls and behavior of fire in the Earth system. However, a comprehensive understanding of the nuances, biases, and limitations of charcoal as a fire proxy is necessary for reliable paleofire interpretations. Here, we use a charcoal dispersal model to answer the following questions: (1) How does the dispersal of wood and grass charcoal particles differ? (2) Do traditional conceptual models of charcoal dispersal reliably characterize grass charcoal dispersal? We find that small differences in shape (L:W) and density of grass and wood charcoal can cause substantial differences in particle dispersal and source area. Whereas the modelled dispersal of wood charcoal shows a localized deposition signal which decays with distance, grass charcoal shows more diffuse deposition lacking a localized center (for both >125 µm and >60 µm). Although paleofire research has typically not distinguished between fuel types, we show that the dispersal of charcoal derived from different fuels is unlikely to be uniform. Because differences in localization, production, and preservation could bias aggregate charcoal accumulation, caution should be taken when interpreting wood and grass-derived charcoal particles preserved in the same record. Additionally, we propose an alternative, dual background conceptual model of grass charcoal dispersal, as the traditional, two-component (peak and background) conceptual model does not accurately characterize the modelled dispersal of grass charcoal. Lastly, this mismatch of conceptualizations of dispersal mechanics implies that grass charcoal may not fit the criteria necessary for peak analysis techniques
Are there gender differences in the geography of alcohol-related mortality in Scotland? An ecological study
<b>Background</b>
There is growing concern about alcohol-related harm, particularly within Scotland which has some of the highest rates of alcohol-related death in western Europe. There are large gender differences in alcohol-related mortality rates in Scotland and in other countries, but the reasons for these differences are not clearly understood. In this paper, we aimed to address calls in the literature for further research on gender differences in the causes, contexts and consequences of alcohol-related harm. Our primary research question was whether the kind of social environment which tends to produce higher or lower rates of alcohol-related mortality is the same for both men and women across Scotland.
<b>Methods</b>
Cross-sectional, ecological design. A comparison was made between spatial variation in men's and women's age-standardised alcohol-related mortality rates in Scotland using maps, Moran's Index, linear regression and spatial analyses of residuals. Directly standardised mortality rates were derived from individual level records of death registration, 2000–2005 (n = 8685).
<b>Results</b>
As expected, men's alcohol-related mortality rate substantially exceeded women's and there was substantial spatial variation in these rates for both men and women within Scotland. However, there was little spatial variation in the relationship between men's and women's alcohol-mortality rates (r2 = 0.73); areas with relatively high rates of alcohol-related mortality for men tended also to have relatively high rates for women. In a small number of areas (8 out of 144) the relationship between men's and women's alcohol-related mortality rates was significantly different.
<b>Conclusion</b>
In as far as geographic location captures exposure to social and economic environment, our results suggest that the relationship between social and economic environment and alcohol-related harm is very similar for men and women. The existence of a small number of areas in which men's and women's alcohol-related mortality had an different relationship suggests that some places may have unusual drinking cultures. These might prove useful for further investigations into the factors which influence drinking behaviour in men and women
Taste aversion learning during successive negative contrast.
Previous experiments found that acceptance of saccharin by rats was reduced if they had prior experience of sucrose or some other highly palatable solution. This study tested whether such successive negative contrast (SNC) effects involve acquisition of an aversion to the new taste. In three experiments, rats were switched from sucrose exposure in Stage 1 to a less palatable solution containing a new taste in Stage 2. In Experiments 1 and 2, a novel flavor was added to a saccharin solution at the start of Stage 2. In Experiment 1, preference tests revealed a weak aversion to the added vanilla flavor in the Suc-Sacch group, while in Experiment 2 an aversion was found in the Suc-Sacch group to the salty flavor that was used, compared with controls given access either saccharin or water in Stage 1. In Experiment 3, the Suc-Quin group, given quinine solution in Stage 2, displayed a greater aversion to quinine than a Water-Quin control group. These results support the suggestion that taste aversion learning plays a role in the initial suppression of intakes in a qualitative consummatory SNC effect. However, in the light of other evidence, it seems that the unusual persistence of successive negative contrast when rats are switched from sucrose to saccharin is not due to a long-lasting reduction in the value of saccharin
CP asymmetry in in a general two-Higgs-doublet model with fourth-generation quarks
We discuss the time-dependent CP asymmetry of decay in an
extension of the Standard Model with both two Higgs doublets and additional
fourth-generation quarks. We show that although the Standard Model with
two-Higgs-doublet and the Standard model with fourth generation quarks alone
are not likely to largely change the effective from the decay of
, the model with both additional Higgs doublet and
fourth-generation quarks can easily account for the possible large negative
value of without conflicting with other experimental
constraints. In this model, additional large CP violating effects may arise
from the flavor changing Yukawa interactions between neutral Higgs bosons and
the heavy fourth generation down type quark, which can modify the QCD penguin
contributions. With the constraints obtained from processes
such as and , this model can lead to the
