Line bundles for which a projectivized jet bundle is a product
We characterize the triples (X,L,H), consisting of holomorphic line bundles L
and H on a complex projective manifold X, such that for some positive integer
k, the k-th holomorphic jet bundle of L, J_k(L), is isomorphic to a direct sum
H+...+H. Given the geometrical constrains imposed by a projectivized line
bundle being a product of the base and a projective space it is natural to
expect that this would happen only under very rare circumstances. It is shown,
in fact, that X is either an Abelian variety or projective space. In the former
case L\cong H is any line bundle of Chern class zero. In the later case for k a
positive integer, L=O_{P^n}(q) with J_k(L)=H+...+H if and only if
H=O_{P^n}(q-k) and either q\ge k or q\le -1.Comment: Latex file, 5 page
Wie entscheiden sich Schülerinnen für oder gegen eine HPV-Impfung?
Zusammenfassung: Hintergrund: 2007 wurde die HPV- ("human papilloma virus-")Impfung in der Schweiz eingeführt und in der Stadt Zürich mittels einer Impfaktion des Schulärztlichen Dienstes 2008 allen Schülerinnen zwischen 11 und 16Jahren gratis angeboten. Danach impft der Schulärztliche Dienst im Rahmen einer Schulärztlichen Untersuchung in der 6. Und 8. Klasse. Die HPV-Impfung ist in der Schweiz umstritten und wird nicht selten, v.a. von impfkritischen Eltern, als überflüssig kritisiert. Ziel: Das Ziel der vorgestellten Studie war zu ermitteln, wie 13- bis 15-jährige Schülerinnen die Entscheidung für oder gegen die Impfung treffen, und von welchen Akteuren sie in ihrer Entscheidungsfindung beeinflusst werden. Ergebnis: Der größte Einflussfaktor bei der Entscheidung für oder gegen die Impfung sind die Eltern, insbesondere die Mütter der Schülerinnen. Diese sind ihrerseits von Frauen- und Kinderärzten beeinflusst. Die Medien, die Lehrpersonen sowie die Peers spielen eine eher untergeordnete Rolle. Insgesamt zeigen viele Akteure eine impfkritische Einstellung, die aber nur teilweise ausgesprochen wird. Um eine bessere Akzeptanz zu erreichen, müsste deshalb ein ganzheitlicher Entscheidungsprozess in den Schulen angestrebt werden, der alle Akteure mit einbezieh
Linear Toric Fibrations
These notes are based on three lectures given at the 2013 CIME/CIRM summer
school. The purpose of this series of lectures is to introduce the notion of a
toric fibration and to give its geometrical and combinatorial
characterizations. Polarized toric varieties which are birationally equivalent
to projective toric bundles are associated to a class of polytopes called
Cayley polytopes. Their geometry and combinatorics have a fruitful interplay
leading to fundamental insight in both directions. These notes will illustrate
geometrical phenomena, in algebraic geometry and neighboring fields, which are
characterized by a Cayley structure. Examples are projective duality of toric
varieties and polyhedral adjunction theory
A Frobenius variant of Seshadri constants
We define and study a version of Seshadri constant for ample line bundles in
positive characteristic. We prove that lower bounds for this constant imply the
global generation or very ampleness of the corresponding adjoint line bundle.
As a consequence, we deduce that the criterion for global generation and very
ampleness of adjoint line bundles in terms of usual Seshadri constants holds

Apoptosis induced by a HIPK2 full-length-specific siRNA is due to off-target effects rather than prevalence of HIPK2-Δe8 isoform.
Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are widely used to study gene function and extensively exploited for their potential therapeutic applications. HIPK2 is an evolutionary conserved kinase that binds and phosphorylates several proteins directly or indirectly related to apoptosis. Recently, an alternatively spliced isoform skipping 81 nucleotides of exon 8 (Hipk2-∆e8) has been described. Selective depletion of Hipk2 full-length (Hipk2-FL) with a speci c siRNA that spares the Hipk2-∆e8 isoform has been shown to strongly induce apoptosis, suggesting an unpredicted dominant- negative effect of Hipk2-FL over the ∆e8 isoform. From this observation, we sought to take advantage and assessed the therapeutic potential of generating Hipk2 isoform unbalance in tumor-initiating cells derived from colorectal cancer patients. Strong reduction of cell viability was induced in vitro and in vivo by the originally described exon 8-speci c siRNA, supporting a potential therapeutic application. However, validation analyses performed with additional exon8-speci c siRNAs with different stabilities showed that all exon8-targeting siRNAs can induce comparable Hipk2 isoform unbalance but only the originally reported e8-siRNA promotes cell death. These data show that loss of viability does not depend on the prevalence of Hipk2- ∆e8 isoform but it is rather due to microRNA-like off-target effects
Presenting signs and patient co-variables in Gaucher disease : outcome of the Gaucher Earlier Diagnosis Consensus (GED-C) Delphi initiative

Physicians can fail to recognise the early stages of GD owing to a lack of disease awareness, which can lead to significant diagnostic delays and sometimes irreversible but avoidable morbidities. Aim: The Gaucher Earlier Diagnosis Consensus (GED-C) initiative aimed to identify signs and co-variables considered most indicative of early type 1 and type 3 GD, to help non-specialists identify ‘at-risk’ patients who may benefit from diagnostic testing. Methods: An anonymous, three-round Delphi consensus process was deployed among a global panel of 22 specialists in GD (median experience 17.5 years, collectively managing almost 3000 patients). The rounds entailed data gathering, then importance ranking and establishment of consensus, using 5-point Likert scales and scoring thresholds defined a priori. Results: For type 1 disease, seven major signs (splenomegaly, thrombocytopenia, bone-related manifestations, anaemia, hyperferritinaemia, hepatomegaly and gammopathy) and two major co-variables (family history of GD and Ashkenazi-Jewish ancestry) were identified. For type 3 disease, nine major signs (splenomegaly, oculomotor disturbances, thrombocytopenia, epilepsy, anaemia, hepatomegaly, bone pain, motor disturbances and kyphosis) and one major co-variable (family history of GD) were identified. Lack of disease awareness, overlooking mild early signs and failure to consider GD as a diagnostic differential were considered major barriers to early diagnosis. Conclusion: The signs and co-variables identified in the GED-C initiative as potentially indicative of early GD will help to guide non-specialists and raise their index of suspicion in identifying patients potentially suitable for diagnostic testing for GD.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
