Iron substitution in NdCoAsO: crystal structure and magnetic phase diagram
The effects of replacing small amounts of Co with Fe in NdCoAsO are reported.
Polycrystalline materials with compositions NdCo1-xFexAsO (x = 0.05, 0.10,
0.15, and 0.20) are studied and the results compared to previous reports for
NdCoAsO. Rietveld analysis of powder x-ray diffraction data shows that as Fe
replaces Co on the transition metal (T) site, the T-As distance increases, and
the As tetrahedra surrounding the T-site become more regular. Electrical
resistivity and magnetization measurements indicate that the three magnetic
phase transitions in NdCoAsO are suppressed as Co is replaced by Fe, and these
transitions are not observed above 1.8 K for x = 0.20. Based on these results,
the magnetic phase diagram for the Co-rich side of the NdCoAsO-NdFeAsO system

Magnetic excitations in weakly coupled spin dimers and chains material Cu2Fe2Ge4O13
Magnetic excitations in a weakly coupled spin dimers and chains compound
Cu2Fe2Ge4O13 are measured by inelastic neutron scattering. Both structure
factors and dispersion of low energy excitations up to 10 meV energy transfer
are well described by a semiclassical spin wave theory involving interacting
Fe () chains. Additional dispersionless excitations are
observed at higher energies, at meV, and associated with
singlet-triplet transitions within Cu-dimers. Both types of excitations
can be understood by treating weak interactions between the Cu and
Fe subsystems at the level of the Mean Field/ Random Phase
Approximation. However, this simple model fails to account for the measured
temperature dependence of the 24 meV mode.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure
Seminal plasma and prostaglandin E2 up-regulate fibroblast growth factor 2 expression in endometrial adenocarcinoma cells via E-series prostanoid-2 receptor-mediated transactivation of the epidermal growth factor receptor and extracellular signal-regulated kinase pathway
BACKGROUND: Prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) has been shown to modulate angiogenesis and tumour progression via the E-series prostanoid-2 (EP2) receptor. Endometrial adenocarcinomas may be exposed to endogenous PGE(2) and exogenous PGE(2), present at high concentration in seminal plasma. METHODS: This study investigated fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) mRNA expression and cell signalling in response to seminal plasma or PGE(2), using an endometrial adenocarcinoma (Ishikawa) cell line stably expressing the EP2 receptor (EP2 sense cells) and endometrial adenocarcinoma explants. RESULTS: Seminal plasma and PGE(2) induced a significant up-regulation of FGF2 expression in EP2 sense but not parental untransfected Ishikawa (wild-type) cells (P < 0.05). These effects were inhibited by co-treatment with EP2 receptor antagonist or inhibitors of protein kinase A, c-Src, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) kinase or extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signalling. The treatment of EP2 sense cells with seminal plasma induced cAMP accumulation and phosphorylation of c-Src, EGFR kinase and ERK via the EP2 receptor. Finally, seminal plasma and PGE(2) significantly increased FGF2 mRNA expression in endometrial adenocarcinoma tissue explants via the EP2 receptor (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Seminal plasma and PGE(2) can similarly activate FGF2 expression and EP2 receptor signalling in endometrial adenocarcinoma cells. These data highlight the potential for seminal plasma exposure to facilitate tumorigenesis–angiogenesis in endometrial adenocarcinomas in vivo
Magnetic Excitations in the S=1/2 Alternating Chain Compound (VO)_2P_2O_7
Magnetic excitations in an array of (VO)_2P_2O_7 single crystals have been
measured using inelastic neutron scattering. Until now, (VO)_2P_2O_7 has been
thought of as a two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin ladder with chains
running in the a-direction. The present results show unequivocally that
(VO)_2P_2O_7 is best described as an alternating spin-chain directed along the
crystallographic b-direction. In addition to the expected magnon with magnetic
zone-center energy gap \Delta = 3.1 meV, a second excitation is observed at an
energy just below 2\Delta. The higher mode may be a triplet two-magnon bound
