Baryon Number Violating Scatterings in Laboratories
Earlier estimates have argued that the baryon number violating scattering
cross-section in the laboratory is exponentially small so it will never be
observed, even for incoming 2-particle energy well above the sphaleron energy
of 9 TeV. However, we argue in arXiv:1505.03690 that, due to the periodic
nature of the sphaleron potential, the event rate for energies above the
sphaleron energy may be high enough to be observed in the near future. That is,
there is a discrepancy of about 70 orders of magnitude between the two
estimates. Here we argue why and how the multi-sphaleron processes are crucial
to the event rate estimate, a very important "resonant tunneling" property that
has not been taken into account before. We also summarize the input assumptions
and reasoning adopted in our estimate, when compared to the earlier estimates.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR
Bloch Wave Function for the Periodic Sphaleron Potential and Unsuppressed Baryon and Lepton Number Violating Processes
For the periodic sphaleron potential in the electroweak theory, we find the
one-dimensional time-independent Schr\"{o}dinger equation with the Chern-Simons
number as the coordinate, construct the Bloch wave function and determine the
corresponding conducting (pass) band structure. We show that the baryon-lepton
number violating processes can take place without the exponential tunneling
suppression (at zero temperature) at energies around and above the barrier
height (sphaleron energy) at 9.0 TeV. Phenomenologically, probable detection of
such processes at LHC is discussed.Comment: 35 pages, 9 figures; explanation improved, appendix added, references

Linking Light Scalar Modes with A Small Positive Cosmological Constant in String Theory
Based on the studies in Type IIB string theory phenomenology, we conjecture
that a good fraction of the meta-stable de Sitter vacua in the cosmic stringy
landscape tend to have a very small cosmological constant when
compared to either the string scale or the Planck scale , i.e.,
. These low lying de Sitter vacua tend to be
accompanied by very light scalar bosons/axions. Here we illustrate this
phenomenon with the bosonic mass spectra in a set of Type IIB string theory
flux compactification models. We conjecture that small with light
bosons is generic among de Sitter solutions in string theory; that is, the
smallness of and the existence of very light bosons (may be even the
Higgs boson) are results of the statistical preference for such vacua in the
landscape. We also discuss a scalar field model to illustrate
how this statistical preference for a small remains when quantum loop
corrections are included, thus bypassing the radiative instability problem.Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures; added subsection: Finite Temperature and Phase

Perfusion Cell Seeding and Expansion in Dual Mechanical Stimulation Bioreactor for In Vitro Tissue Development
BACKGROUND: Engineered tissues are an exciting potential source of small diameter vascular grafts due to limited supply and patency of available alternatives. Engineered tissue vascular grafts (ETVGs) will provide physiological function that resembles native arteries and maintain the required mechanical properties as they integrate with host tissue. Mechanical stimulation during incubation encourages proper cell alignment and increases extracellular matrix deposition. The enhanced organization of the engineered tissue leads to improved compliance over synthetic alternatives without sacrificing strength and may lead to better integration in vivo.
METHODS: We have developed a bioreactor that mechanically trains grafts during incubation. To test the seeding efficiency of the bioreactor, rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) were seeded onto electrospun PCL scaffolds by perfusion at various cell concentrations then incubated Page | 15 for 1 week under static conditions. We assessed gross morphology with H&E; collagen with picrosirius red; and VSMC density with DAPI. ETVGs were further evaluated with mechanical testing and scanning electron microscopy to evaluate mechanical and microstructural properties.
RESULTS: Cells were successfully seeded evenly onto the luminal surface of electrospun PCL scaffolds. Cells remained viable and continued to proliferate and deposit ECM throughout incubation.
CONCLUSIONS: Progress in the ETVG paradigm requires a systematic approach toward better understanding of the cause-effect interplay between implant properties, host reactions, and their modulation with controllable parameters. Future directions involve the assessment of the effects of mechanical training on growth and remodeling of engineered tissues in vitro and subsequent effects on the foreign body response post-implantation in a murine model.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1115/thumbnail.jp
Validity of very short answer versus single best answer questions for undergraduate assessment
Background Single Best Answer (SBA) questions are widely used in undergraduate and postgraduate medical examinations. Selection of the correct answer in SBA questions may be subject to cueing and therefore might not test the student’s knowledge. In contrast to this artificial construct, doctors are ultimately required to perform in a real-life setting that does not offer a list of choices. This professional competence can be tested using Short Answer Questions (SAQs), where the student writes the correct answer without prompting from the question. However, SAQs cannot easily be machine marked and are therefore not feasible as an instrument for testing a representative sample of the curriculum for a large number of candidates. We hypothesised that a novel assessment instrument consisting of very short answer (VSA) questions is a superior test of knowledge than assessment by SBA. Methods We conducted a prospective pilot study on one cohort of 266 medical students sitting a formative examination. All students were assessed by both a novel assessment instrument consisting of VSAs and by SBA questions. Both instruments tested the same knowledge base. Using the filter function of Microsoft Excel, the range of answers provided for each VSA question was reviewed and correct answers accepted in less than two minutes. Examination results were compared between the two methods of assessment. Results Students scored more highly in all fifteen SBA questions than in the VSA question format, despite both examinations requiring the same knowledge base. Conclusions Valid assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate knowledge can be improved by the use of VSA questions. Such an approach will test nascent physician ability rather than ability to pass exams

Direct spatial-temporal discrimination of modes in a photonic lightwave circuit using photon scanning tunnelling microscopy
Multi-mode photonic lightwave circuits (PLCs) provide new avenues for extending the performance of single mode systems. As an example, they can potentially provide increased bandwidth by multiplexing information into different waveguide modes[1]. For practical applications of multi-mode PLCs to be developed, a measurement technique is required to investigate detailed mode profiles and propagation constants in complex circuits. Photon scanning tunnelling microscopy (PSTM) provides a means of experimentally tracking the femtosecond inter-modal delays observed in PLCs with the ability to discriminate modes by their spatial profiles inside the waveguide
