    Experimental Research on Performances of Air Turbines for a Fixed Oscillating Water Column-Type Wave Energy Converter

    A fixed oscillating water column (OWC)-type wave energy converter is composed of an air chamber for primary conversion and an air turbine for secondary conversion. In the optimal design method of a fixed OWC-type wave energy converter, it is necessary to develop a design method which can consider the characteristics of incident wave motion, the motion of the internal free surface affected in the structure such as a partly submerged wall, the fluctuation of air pressure in an air chamber, the rotation of the air turbine. In this paper, the 2-dimensional wave tank tests in regular waves for the performance evaluation of the air turbines in a fixed OWC-type wave energy converter were conducted to obtain the data needed to make this design method. As the results, the effects of the impulse turbine specification such as the rotor inlet/outlet angle, the guide vane's number and the vane's setting angle on the primary and secondary conversion efficiencies are clarified experimentally. Furthermore, the performances of the Wells turbines with different number of blade are presented for comparison of the operating condition

    Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set

    We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2, -1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys.     Phylogenetic origin of dioecious Callicarpa (Lamiaceae) species endemic to the Ogasawara Islands revealed by chloroplast and nuclear whole genome analyses

    Oceanic islands offer excellent opportunities to study the ecology, evolutionary biology, and biogeography of plants. To uncover the genetic basis of various evolutionary trends commonly observed on these islands, the origins and phylogenetic relationships of the species being studied should be understood. Callicarpa glabra, Callicarpa parvifolia, and Callicarpa subpubescens are evergreen woody plants endemic to the Ogasawara Islands, which are remote oceanic islands located off of the Japanese Archipelago. These species are ideal for studying evolutionary changes on oceanic islands because of their adaptive radiation and shift toward dioecious sex expression. We used a phylogenomic perspective to determine the evolutionary relationship of the three species within the genus and infer their colonization time. Based on the analysis of both chloroplast genomes and 86 nuclear single-copy genes, we found that these three species were monophyletic and embedded in a backbone clade that included multiple East Asian species. The phylogenetic tree based on over 10, 000 nuclear genes placed the insular species in the East Asian clade, although the topology did not entirely correspond to the chloroplast tree, probably because of incomplete lineage sorting and interspecific hybridization. The three endemic species were estimated to have diverged from continental species approximately three million years ago (Mya). The results of this study suggested that the ancestor of the Ogasawara endemic species originated from long-distance dispersal from East Asia mainland in the late Pliocene, and then progressively speciated within the islands

    Effect of Homogeneous Condensation on the Interaction of Supersonic Moist Air Jets with Resonance Tube

    The Hartmann tube, can use for flow-control, is a device which generates high intensity sound through the shock wave oscillations, are created by the interaction of the supersonic jet. In this study, two-phase flow simulations are carried out to characterize the effect of non-equilibrium condensation on the unsteady flowfield of the Hartmann resonance tube. This present numerical work provides a new insight on the flow dynamics and acoustics of the resonance tube – including the shock nature, the tube gas heating, and the effect of non-equilibrium condensation on the flow structure. A TVD numerical method is applied to the Reynolds and Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and droplet growth equation of liquid phase production. The simulations are performed over a range of nozzle pressure ratios. The numerically simulated flow structure of under-expanded supersonic jets is compared with experimental data. Moreover, the predicted frequency of end wall pressure fluctuations is compared with the experimental results

    Th Inducing POZ-Kruppel Factor (ThPOK) Is a Key Regulator of the Immune Response since the Early Steps of Colorectal Carcinogenesis

    We purposed to evaluate the role of Th inducing POZ-Kruppel Factor (ThPOK), a transcriptional regulator of T cell fate, in tumour-induced immune system plasticity in colorectal carcinogenesis. The amounts of CD4+, CD8+ and CD56+ and ThPOK+ cells infiltrate in normal colorectal mucosa (NM), in dysplastic aberrant crypt foci (microadenomas, MA), the earliest detectable lesions in colorectal carcinogenesis, and in colorectal carcinomas (CRC), were measured, and the colocalization of ThPOK with the above-mentioned markers of immune cells was evaluated using confocal microscopy. Interestingly, ThPOK showed a prominent increase since MA. A strong colocalization of ThPOK with CD4 both in NM and in MA was observed, weaker in carcinomas. Surprisingly, there was a peak in the colocalization levels of ThPOK with CD8 in MA, which was evident, although to a lesser extent, in carcinomas, too. In conclusion, according to the data of the present study, ThPOK may be considered a central regulator of the earliest events in the immune system during colorectal cancer development, decreasing the immune response against cancer cells
