    What do Astronomers Do: A Survey of U.S. Astronomers\u27 Attitudes, Tools and Techniques, and Social Interactions Engaged in through their Practice of Science

    Astronomy is one of the oldest STEM enterprises today. It is a discipline through which technology has been advanced, as well as our understanding of the universe. Further, astronomy is a gateway science that inspires the imagination of young learners, and can be used to promote STEM careers. In order to advance the astronomy enterprise, we must maintain an informed citizenry. The practice of astronomy has changed over time; astronomy today is much different than it was 50 years ago. In an effort to identify the current practice of astronomy, or what it is that today\u27s astronomers do, 478 U.S. astronomers participated in the study focusing on their engagement in three areas of scientific practice; science attitudes, tools and techniques, and social interactions. In addition, astronomers\u27 perceptions about career choice, work-related activities they engage in, motivations for doing astronomy, and changes needed in education were also explored. Data were collected over a 3-month time period via an online survey and telephone interviews. Data provided by survey participants provides a solid foundation from which findings and conclusions are drawn. Today\u27s population of astronomers is largely white, male, and older, however moving toward gender balance. The population as a whole places great importance on the practice of attitudes such as thinking critically, respecting the evidence, honesty, and objectivity. Unlike many might think, astronomers spend little time at the telescope collecting data, but rather the vast majority of their time is spent working at a computer. Further, engaging in administrative duties, writing, use of mathematics, searching for funding, mentoring others, and collaborating with colleagues are all critical tools/techniques and social skills in the practice of astronomy today. Finally, pop culture and personal experience plays a significant role in attracting individuals to a career in astronomy, and exploration and uncovering that which is unknown, the thrill of discovery, is what keeps them motivated. This study identified and quantified the activities in which professional astronomers engage, and the findings can be used to design formal and informal learning experiences K through adult to more closely reflect the science of astronomy and the people who engage in the practice

    Zusammenfassung: 1928 beschrieb Hugo Friedrich Kufs erstmalig eine Familie mit zerebralen, retinalen und kutanen Kavernomen. Mittlerweile wurden über 300 weitere Familien beschrieben. Ebenfalls wurden drei Genloci 7q21-q22 (mit dem Gen CCM1), 7p15-p13 (Gen CCM2) und 3q25.2-q27 (Gen CCM3) beschrieben, in denen Mutationen zu Kavernomen führen. Das Genprodukt von CCM1 ist das Protein Krit1 (Krev Interaction Trapped 1), das über verschiedene Mechanismen mit der Angiogenese interagiert. Das neu entdeckte CCM2-Gen enkodiert ein Protein, das möglicherweise eine dem Krit1 ähnliche Funktion in der Regulation der Angiogenese hat. Das CCM3-Gen wurde noch nicht beschrieben.     Spitzer Observations of IC 2118

    IC 2118, also known as the Witch Head Nebula, is a wispy, roughly cometary, ~5 degree long reflection nebula, and is thought to be a site of triggered star formation. In order to search for new young stellar objects (YSOs), we have observed this region in 7 mid- and far-infrared bands using the Spitzer Space Telescope and in 4 bands in the optical using the U. S. Naval Observatory 40-inch telescope. We find infrared excesses in 4 of the 6 previously-known T Tauri stars in our combined infrared maps, and we find 6 entirely new candidate YSOs, one of which may be an edge-on disk. Most of the YSOs seen in the infrared are Class II objects, and they are all in the "head" of the nebula, within the most massive molecular cloud of the region.Comment: Accepted to Ap

    Complications and safety of vagus nerve stimulation: 25 years of experience at a single center

    OBJECTIVE The goal of this paper was to investigate surgical and hardware complications in a longitudinal retrospective study. METHODS The authors of this registry study analyzed the surgical and hardware complications in 247 patients who underwent the implantation of a vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) device between 1990 and 2014. The mean follow-up time was 12 years. RESULTS In total, 497 procedures were performed for 247 primary VNS implantations. Complications related to surgery occurred in 8.6% of all implantation procedures that were performed. The respective rate for hardware complications was 3.7%. Surgical complications included postoperative hematoma in 1.9%, infection in 2.6%, vocal cord palsy in 1.4%, lower facial weakness in 0.2%, pain and sensory-related complications in 1.4%, aseptic reaction in 0.2%, cable discomfort in 0.2%, surgical cable break in 0.2%, oversized stimulator pocket in 0.2%, and battery displacement in 0.2% of patients. Hardware-related complications included lead fracture/malfunction in 3.0%, spontaneous VNS turn-on in 0.2%, and lead disconnection in 0.2% of patients. CONCLUSIONS VNS implantation is a relatively safe procedure, but it still involves certain risks. The most common complications are postoperative hematoma, infection, and vocal cord palsy. Although their occurrence rates are rather low at about 2%, these complications may cause major suffering and even be life threatening. To reduce complications, it is important to have a long-term perspective. The 25 years of follow-up of this study is of great strength considering that VNS can be a life-long treatment for many patients. Thus, it is important to include repeated surgeries such as battery and lead replacements, given that complications also may occur with these surgeries
