Can Common Crawl Reliably Track Persistent Identifier (PID) Use Over Time
We report here on the results of two studies using two and four monthly web
crawls respectively from the Common Crawl (CC) initiative between 2014 and
2017, whose initial goal was to provide empirical evidence for the changing
patterns of use of so-called persistent identifiers. This paper focusses on the
tooling needed for dealing with CC data, and the problems we found with it. The
first study is based on over URIs from over pages crawled
in April 2014 and April 2017, the second study adds a further pages
from the April 2015 and April 2016 crawls. We conclude with suggestions on
specific actions needed to enable studies based on CC to give reliable

ECONOMIC SURPLUS AND THE DISTRIBUTIONAL CONSEQUENCES OF DEREGULATING TOBACCO PRODUCTION
Reservations on technical and theoretical grounds in the use of the consumer surplus approach to measure benefits of government programs have often appeared in the literature. Therefore, this paper uses an alternative approach in a case study to estimate the annual economic surplus created in South Carolina from deregulating tobacco production. Impacts of deregulation on cropping patterns and income on representative tobacco farms, and distribution of benefits in the economy are examined. Results of this study indicate that deregulation stimulates the economy and would increase the net value added by $5.8 million in the long run.Agricultural and Food Policy,

Precision Astrometry of a Sample of Speckle Binaries and Multiples with the Adaptive Optics Facilities at the Hale and Keck II Telescopes
Using the adaptive optics facilities at the 200-in Hale and 10-m Keck II, we
observed in the near infrared a sample of 12 binary and multiple stars and one
open cluster. We used the near diffraction limited images of these systems to
measure the relative separations and position angles between their components.
In this paper, we investigate and correct for the influence of the differential
chromatic refraction and chip distortions on our relative astrometric
measurements. Over one night, we achieve an astrometric precision typically
well below 1 miliarcsecond and occasionally as small as 40 microarcseconds.
Such a precision is in principle sufficient to astrometrically detect planetary
mass objects around the components of nearby binary and multiple stars. Since
we have not had sufficiently large data sets for the observed sample of stars
to detect planets, we provide the limits to planetary mass objects based on the

LNK suppresses interferon signaling in melanoma.
LNK (SH2B3) is a key negative regulator of JAK-STAT signaling which has been extensively studied in malignant hematopoietic diseases. We found that LNK is significantly elevated in cutaneous melanoma; this elevation is correlated with hyperactive signaling of the RAS-RAF-MEK pathway. Elevated LNK enhances cell growth and survival in adverse conditions. Forced expression of LNK inhibits signaling by interferon-STAT1 and suppresses interferon (IFN) induced cell cycle arrest and cell apoptosis. In contrast, silencing LNK expression by either shRNA or CRISPR-Cas9 potentiates the killing effect of IFN. The IFN-LNK signaling is tightly regulated by a negative feedback mechanism; melanoma cells exposed to IFN upregulate expression of LNK to prevent overactivation of this signaling pathway. Our study reveals an unappreciated function of LNK in melanoma and highlights the critical role of the IFN-STAT1-LNK signaling axis in this potentially devastating disease. LNK may be further explored as a potential therapeutic target for melanoma immunotherapy

Measuring and Modelling the Redshift Evolution of Clustering: the Hubble Deep Field North
(abridged) The evolution of galaxy clustering from z=0 to z=4.5 is analyzed
using the angular correlation function and the photometric redshift
distribution of galaxies brighter than I_{AB}\le 28.5 in the HDF North. The
reliability of the photometric redshift estimates is discussed on the basis of
the available spectroscopic redshifts, comparing different codes and
investigating the effects of photometric errors. The redshift bins in which the
clustering properties are measured are then optimized to take into account the
uncertainties of the photometric redshifts. The results show that the comoving
correlation length has a small decrease in the range 0<z<1 followed by an
increase at higher z. We compare these results with the theoretical predictions
of a variety of cosmological models belonging to the general class of CDM. The
comparison with the expected mass clustering evolution indicates that the
observed high-redshift galaxies are biased tracers of the dark matter with an
effective bias b strongly increasing with redshift. Assuming an Einstein-de
Sitter universe, we obtain b\simeq 2 at z=2 and b\simeq 5 at z=4. A comparison
of the clustering amplitudes that we measured at z=3 with those reported for
LBG suggests that the clustering depends on the abundance of the objects: more
abundant objects are less clustered, as expected in the paradigm of
hierarchical galaxy formation. The strong clustering and high bias measured at
z=3 are consistent with the expected density of massive haloes predicted for
the various cosmologies here considered. At z=4, the strong clustering observed
in the HDF requires a significant fraction of massive haloes to be already
formed by that epoch. This feature could be a discriminant test for the

Transgenic Rescue of the LARGEmyd Mouse: A LARGE Therapeutic Window?
LARGE is a glycosyltransferase involved in glycosylation of α-dystroglycan (α-DG). Absence of this protein in the LARGEmyd mouse results in α-DG hypoglycosylation, and is associated with central nervous system abnormalities and progressive muscular dystrophy. Up-regulation of LARGE has previously been proposed as a therapy for the secondary dystroglycanopathies: overexpression in cells compensates for defects in multiple dystroglycanopathy genes. Counterintuitively, LARGE overexpression in an FKRP-deficient mouse exacerbates pathology, suggesting that modulation of α-DG glycosylation requires further investigation. Here we demonstrate that transgenic expression of human LARGE (LARGE-LV5) in the LARGEmyd mouse restores α-DG glycosylation (with marked hyperglycosylation in muscle) and that this corrects both the muscle pathology and brain architecture. By quantitative analyses of LARGE transcripts we also here show that levels of transgenic and endogenous LARGE in the brains of transgenic animals are comparable, but that the transgene is markedly overexpressed in heart and particularly skeletal muscle (20–100 fold over endogenous). Our data suggest LARGE overexpression may only be deleterious under a forced regenerative context, such as that resulting from a reduction in FKRP: in the absence of such a defect we show that systemic expression of LARGE can indeed act therapeutically, and that even dramatic LARGE overexpression is well-tolerated in heart and skeletal muscle. Moreover, correction of LARGEmyd brain pathology with only moderate, near-physiological LARGE expression suggests a generous therapeutic window
Tidal Heating Models for the Radii of the Inflated Transiting Giant Planets WASP-4b, WASP-6b, WASP-12b, and TrES-4
In order to explain the inflated radii of some transiting extrasolar giant
planets, we investigate a tidal heating scenario for the inflated planets
WASP-4b, WASP-6b, WASP-12b, WASP-15b, and TrES-4. To do so, we assume that they
retain a nonzero eccentricity, possibly by dint of continuing interaction with
a third body. We calculate the amount of extra heating in the envelope that is
then required to fit the radius of each planet, and we explore how this
additional power depends on the planetary atmospheric opacity and on the mass
of a heavy-element central core. There is a degeneracy between the core mass
and the heating . Therefore, in the case
of tidal heating, there is for each planet a range of the couple that can lead to the same radius, where is the tidal
dissipation factor and is the eccentricity. With this in mind, we also
investigate the case of the non-inflated planet HAT-P-12b, which can admit
solutions combining a heavy-element core and tidal heating. A substantial
improvement of the measured eccentricities of such planetary systems could
simplify this degeneracy by linking the two unknown parameters . Further independent constraints on either of these parameters
