Inequality amongst the wealthiest and its link with economic growth
In this paper we correlate the key features of the distribution of wealth of the 500 wealthiest individuals in the Netherlands with economic growth and stock market returns for 1998 to 2009. We show that each year the distribution obeys a power law and that the key parameter measures the degree of inequality. Our main finding is that more inequality amongst the wealthiest is associated with higher economic growth.economic growth;power law;wealth distribution

Beyond deficiency:Potential benefits of increased intakesof vitamin K for bone and vascular health
Vitamin K is wellknown for its role in the synthesisof a number of blood coagulationfactors.During recent years vitaminK-dependent proteins werediscovered to be of vital importancefor bone and vascular health.Recommendations for dietary vitaminK intake have been made onthe basis of the hepatic requirementsfor the synthesis of bloodcoagulation factors.Accumulatingevidence suggests that the requirementsfor other functions thanblood coagulation may be higher. This paper is the result of a closedworkshop (Paris,November 2002)in which a number of Europeanvitamin K experts reviewed theavailable data and formulated theirstandpoint with respect to recommendeddietary vitamin K intakeand the use of vitamin K-containingsupplements
The anisotropy of granular materials
The effect of the anisotropy on the elastoplastic response of two dimensional
packed samples of polygons is investigated here, using molecular dynamics
simulation. We show a correlation between fabric coefficients, characterizing
the anisotropy of the granular skeleton, and the anisotropy of the elastic
response. We also study the anisotropy induced by shearing on the subnetwork of
the sliding contacts. This anisotropy provides an explanation to some features
of the plastic deformation of granular media.Comment: Submitted to PR
Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Pion Scattering from Li
We show that the neutron and proton transition densities predicted by recent
quantum Monte Carlo calculations for A=6,7 nuclei are consistent with pion
scattering from 6Li and 7Li at energies near the Delta resonance. This has
provided a microscopic understanding of the enhancement factors for quadrople
excitations, which were needed to describe pion inelastic scattering within the
nuclear shell model of Cohen and Kurath.Comment: 10 pages, REVTeX, 3 postscript figures; added calculation of elastic
and inelastic pion scattering from 6Li at multiple energie
Bayesian hierarchical modeling of longitudinal glaucomatous visual fields using a two-stage approach
The Bayesian approach has become increasingly popular because it allows to fit quite complex models to data via Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling. However, it is also recognized nowadays that Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling can become computationally prohibitive when applied to a large data set. We encountered serious computational difficulties when fitting an hierarchical model to longitudinal glaucoma data of patients who participate in an ongoing Dutch study. To overcome this problem, we applied and extended a recently proposed two-stage approach to model these data. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. In order to detect deterioration at an early stage, a model for predicting visual fields (VFs) in time is needed. Hence, the true underlying VF progression can be determined, and treatment strategies can then be optimized to prevent further VF loss. Because we were unable to fit these data with the classical one-stage approach upon which the current popular Bayesian software is based, we made use of the two-stage Bayesian approach. The considered hierarchical longitudinal model involves estimating a large number of random effects and deals with censoring and high measurement variability. In addition, we extended the approach with tools for model evaluation. Copyrigh
Internal states of model isotropic granular packings. III. Elastic properties
In this third and final paper of a series, elastic properties of numerically
simulated isotropic packings of spherical beads assembled by different
procedures and subjected to a varying confining pressure P are investigated. In
addition P, which determines the stiffness of contacts by Hertz's law, elastic
moduli are chiefly sensitive to the coordination number, the possible values of
which are not necessarily correlated with the density. Comparisons of numerical
and experimental results for glass beads in the 10kPa-10MPa range reveal
similar differences between dry samples compacted by vibrations and lubricated
packings. The greater stiffness of the latter, in spite of their lower density,
can hence be attributed to a larger coordination number. Voigt and Reuss bounds
bracket bulk modulus B accurately, but simple estimation schemes fail for shear
modulus G, especially in poorly coordinated configurations under low P.
Tenuous, fragile networks respond differently to changes in load direction, as
compared to load intensity. The shear modulus, in poorly coordinated packings,
tends to vary proportionally to the degree of force indeterminacy per unit
volume. The elastic range extends to small strain intervals, in agreement with
experimental observations. The origins of nonelastic response are discussed. We
conclude that elastic moduli provide access to mechanically important
information about coordination numbers, which escape direct measurement
techniques, and indicate further perspectives.Comment: Published in Physical Review E 25 page

The problems of increasing the efficiency of grinding highly precision gearwheels of the 3–4
degree of precision using superhard material tools are discussed. The efficiency of cubic boron
nitride dish grinding wheels in various bonds has been studied. Recommendations how to use cubic
boron nitride wheels in gear grinding are given

The article aims to study Luis Hernández’ poetry from the point of view of the problems that emerge when trying to analyze his Complete Works. Rather than being assessed as “unfinished”, the deliberate and unsystematic appearance of his poetic, should rather be understood as the result of a calculated and conscious artistic practice that stems from philosophical trends which traditionally have fostered an ontology of movement against a metaphysics of permanence. Under this view, Hernández work shows up as “plane of immanence” from where sense becomes an event for the creative writing process.El següent article es proposa estudiar la poesia de Luis Hernández a partir dels problemes que sorgeixen al tractar d’estudiar la seva obra reunida.
