Wind turbulence inputs for horizontal axis wind turbines
Wind turbine response characteristics in the presence of atmospheric turbulence was predicted using two major modeling steps. First, the important atmospheric sources for the force excitations felt by the wind turbine system were identified and characterized. Second, a dynamic model was developed which describes how these excitations are transmitted through the structure and power train. The first modeling step, that of quantifying the important excitations due to the atmospheric turbulence was established. The dynamic modeling of the second step was undertaken separately
Partonic Effects in Heavy Ion Collisions at RHIC
Effects of partonic interactions in heavy ion collisions at RHIC are studied
in a multiphase transport model (AMPT) that includes both initial partonic and
final hadronic interactions. It is found that a large parton scattering cross
section is needed to understand the measured elliptic flow of pions and
two-pion correlation function.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, Workshop on Quark and Hadron Dynamics, Budapest,

Effect of leading-edge geometry on boundary-layer receptivity to freestream sound
The receptivity to freestream sound of the laminar boundary layer over a semi-infinite flat plate with an elliptic leading edge is simulated numerically. The incompressible flow past the flat plate is computed by solving the full Navier-Stokes equations in general curvilinear coordinates. A finite-difference method which is second-order accurate in space and time is used. Spatial and temporal developments of the Tollmien-Schlichting wave in the boundary layer, due to small-amplitude time-harmonic oscillations of the freestream velocity that closely simulate a sound wave travelling parallel to the plate, are observed. The effect of leading-edge curvature is studied by varying the aspect ratio of the ellipse. The boundary layer over the flat plate with a sharper leading edge is found to be less receptive. The relative contribution of the discontinuity in curvature at the ellipse-flat-plate juncture to receptivity is investigated by smoothing the juncture with a polynomial. Continuous curvature leads to less receptivity. A new geometry of the leading edge, a modified super ellipse, which provides continuous curvature at the juncture with the flat plate, is used to study the effect of continuous curvature and inherent pressure gradient on receptivity
Deep Learning Based Vehicle Make-Model Classification
This paper studies the problems of vehicle make & model classification. Some
of the main challenges are reaching high classification accuracy and reducing
the annotation time of the images. To address these problems, we have created a
fine-grained database using online vehicle marketplaces of Turkey. A pipeline
is proposed to combine an SSD (Single Shot Multibox Detector) model with a CNN
(Convolutional Neural Network) model to train on the database. In the pipeline,
we first detect the vehicles by following an algorithm which reduces the time
for annotation. Then, we feed them into the CNN model. It is reached
approximately 4% better classification accuracy result than using a
conventional CNN model. Next, we propose to use the detected vehicles as ground
truth bounding box (GTBB) of the images and feed them into an SSD model in
another pipeline. At this stage, it is reached reasonable classification
accuracy result without using perfectly shaped GTBB. Lastly, an application is
implemented in a use case by using our proposed pipelines. It detects the
unauthorized vehicles by comparing their license plate numbers and make &
models. It is assumed that license plates are readable.Comment: 10 pages, ICANN 2018: Artificial Neural Networks and Machine Learnin
Modelling the influence of personality and culture on affect and enjoyment in multimedia
Affect is evoked through an intricate relationship between the characteristics of stimuli, individuals, and systems of perception. While affect is widely researched, few studies consider the combination of multimedia system characteristics and human factors together. As such, this paper explores the influence of personality (Five-Factor Model) and cultural traits (Hofstede Model) on the intensity of multimedia-evoked positive and negative affects (emotions). A set of 144 video sequences (from 12 short movie clips) were evaluated by 114 participants from a cross-cultural population, producing 1232 ratings. On this data, three multilevel regression models are compared: a baseline model that only considers system factors; an extended model that includes personality and culture; and an optimistic model in which each participant is modelled. An analysis shows that personal and cultural traits represent 5.6% of the variance in positive affect and 13.6% of the variance in negative affect. In addition, the affect-enjoyment correlation varied across the clips. This suggests that personality and culture play a key role in predicting the intensity of negative affect and whether or not it is enjoyed, but a more sophisticated set of predictors is needed to model positive affect with the same efficacy
Boson Core Compressibility
Strongly interacting atoms trapped in optical lattices can be used to explore
phase diagrams of Hubbard models. Spatial inhomogeneity due to trapping
typically obscures distinguishing observables. We propose that measures using
boson double occupancy avoid trapping effects to reveal key correlation
functions. We define a boson core compressibility and core superfluid stiffness
in terms of double occupancy. We use quantum Monte Carlo on the Bose-Hubbard
model to empirically show that these quantities intrinsically eliminate edge
effects to reveal correlations near the trap center. The boson core
compressibility offers a generally applicable tool that can be used to
experimentally map out phase transitions between compressible and
incompressible states.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
