Measuring and explaining the diversity of voices and viewpoints in the news

News media can be considered to fulfil their democratic role as a “marketplace of ideas” only if they present a diverse content that gives space to a wider range of ideas and viewpoints. But how can content diversity be assessed? And what determines actor and viewpoint diversity in the first place? By employing measurements of actor and viewpoint diversity at the article and newspaper level, this study provides a complete overview on the content diversity of immigration news, and it investigates factors that have an impact on content diversity of immigration newspaper articles in Belgium, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom (2013-2014). The results of a multilevel analysis indicate that both the articles’ size and the elite character of a newspaper play a key role in enhancing news’ multiperspectivalness. Also, the findings show that these two measurements of content diversity are different yet related to each other

Wandel der Kommunikation in der digitalen Gesellschaft: Einführung in das Special Issue zur DACH 21-Dreiländertagung für Kommunikationswissenschaft

Dass die Kommunikationswissenschaft einem kontinuierlichen Wandel unterworfen ist, unterscheidet sie nicht von anderen sozialwissen-schaftlichen Disziplinen. Das liegt nicht zuletzt daran, dass die großen Triebfedern hinter den Wandlungsprozessen überall die gleichen sind. Gesellschaftliche Megatrends wie Globalisierung, Individualisierung und Digitalisierung beeinflussen Politikwissenschaft oder Soziologie genauso wie die Kommunikationswissenschaft. Allerdings – und hier besteht nun doch ein Unterschied – hat insbesondere die Digitalisie-rung für die Kommunikationswissenschaft deutlich unmittelbarere Veränderungen mit sich gebracht als dies in den Nachbardisziplinen der Fall ist. Der Grund dafür ist, dass sie den Gegenstand des Fachs selbst betrifft: Die Digitalisierung der Kommunikation und der Medien führt zu einem Wandel der Art und Weise, wie Informationen in der Gesellschaft hergestellt, vermittelt und genutzt werden. Die daraus resultierenden Entwicklungen, wie z. B. die Möglichkeit der globalen Vernetzung in Sozialen Onlinenetzwerken, über Instant Messenger oder die enorme Ausweitung und Fragmentierung des Medienangebots und seiner Nutzung sind wiederum Phänomene, die aus dem Zusam-menspiel der erwähnten Megatrends resultieren. Kommunikativer Wandel findet allerdings nicht nur langfristig statt, sondern kann sich ebenso kurzfristig, mitunter gar disruptiv vollziehen, wie gerade die Corona-Krise eindrücklich gezeigt hat

Fruit-Surface Flavonoid Accumulation in Tomato Is Controlled by a SlMYB12-Regulated Transcriptional Network

The cuticle covering plants' aerial surfaces is a unique structure that plays a key role in organ development and protection against diverse stress conditions. A detailed analysis of the tomato colorless-peel y mutant was carried out in the framework of studying the outer surface of reproductive organs. The y mutant peel lacks the yellow flavonoid pigment naringenin chalcone, which has been suggested to influence the characteristics and function of the cuticular layer. Large-scale metabolic and transcript profiling revealed broad effects on both primary and secondary metabolism, related mostly to the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids, particularly flavonoids. These were not restricted to the fruit or to a specific stage of its development and indicated that the y mutant phenotype is due to a mutation in a regulatory gene. Indeed, expression analyses specified three R2R3-MYB–type transcription factors that were significantly down-regulated in the y mutant fruit peel. One of these, SlMYB12, was mapped to the genomic region on tomato chromosome 1 previously shown to harbor the y mutation. Identification of an additional mutant allele that co-segregates with the colorless-peel trait, specific down-regulation of SlMYB12 and rescue of the y phenotype by overexpression of SlMYB12 on the mutant background, confirmed that a lesion in this regulator underlies the y phenotype. Hence, this work provides novel insight to the study of fleshy fruit cuticular structure and paves the way for the elucidation of the regulatory network that controls flavonoid accumulation in tomato fruit cuticle

Appraisal patterns as predictors of emotional expressions and shares on political social networking sites

Emotions are considered important drivers of the diffusion of messages on social networking sites. Therefore, emotion-eliciting political communication yields the potential to reach broad audiences and to influence citizens’ attitudes and behavior. In this study, we investigate message characteristics that potentially trigger emotional reactions on part of the users of political social networking pages and test if this fosters the diffusion of political content in the network. Based on appraisal theory, we employ a manual coding scheme to identify appraisal dimensions in political parties’ Facebook posts that should trigger sadness or anger. We subsequently combine the manual codings with information of the users’ reactions to the respective posts, which we gathered using an automated content analysis. More specifically, we determine (1) if posts that include sadness or anger appraisals are associated with the corresponding emotional reactions in the form of emojis and (2) if these posts are shared more often
