Failure regime in (1+1) dimensions in fibrous materials
In this paper, we introduce a model for fracture in fibrous materials that
takes into account the rupture height of the fibers, in contrast with previous
models. Thus, we obtain the profile of the fracture and calculate its
roughness, defined as the variance around the mean height. We investigate the
relationship between the fracture roughness and the fracture toughness.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.eps, Revte

Waveform-level time-domain simulation comparison study of three shipboard power system architectures
Detailed waveform-level modeling and simulation of three alternative shipboard power system architectures is presented herein. The three system architectures are based on conventional 60Hz medium-voltage ac (MVAC), higherfrequency 240Hz medium-voltage ac (HFAC) and mediumvoltage dc (MVDC) technologies. To support the quantitative assessment and comparison of these three different power system architectures, each technology was modeled using a common representative, notional baseline ship. The baseline ship represents a multi-mission destroyer fitted with an 80MW next generation integrated power system (NGIPS). Modeling of each power system architecture is set forth along with simulation studies for three fault scenarios. Each of the three power system architectures was implemented within the MATLAB/ Simulink environment. Continuity of service was evaluated for each architecture along with a fault scenario using an operability metric. After a brief description of the three power system architectures and the operability metric, quantitative results are presented.Center for Electromechanic
Current Helicity and Twist as Two Indicators of The Mirror Asymmetry of solar Magnetic Fields
A comparison between the two tracers of magnetic field mirror asymmetry in
solar active regions, twist and current helicity, is presented. It is shown
that for individual active regions these tracers do not possess visible
similarity while averaging by time over the solar cycle, or by latitude,
reveals similarities in their behaviour. The main property of the dataset is
anti-symmetry over the solar equator. Considering the evolution of helical
properties over the solar cycle we find signatures of a possible sign change at
the beginning of the cycle, though more systematic observational data are
required for a definite confirmation. We discuss the role of both tracers in
the context of the solar dynamo theory.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Lepton distribution as a probe of new physics in production and decay of the t quark and its polarization
We investigate the possibilities of studying new physics in various processes
of t-quark production using kinematical distributions of the secondary lepton
coming from decay of t quarks. We show that the angular distributions of the
secondary lepton are insensitive to the anomalous tbW vertex and hence are pure
probes of new physics in a generic process of t-quark production. The energy
distribution of the lepton is distinctly affected by anomalous tbW couplings
and can be used to analyze them independent of the production process of t
quarks. The effects of t polarization on the distributions of the decay lepton
are demonstrated for top-pair production process at a gamma-gamma collider
mediated by a heavy Higgs boson.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, uses axodraw.sty (included), references added.

Disorder-induced phase transition in a one-dimensional model of rice pile
We propose a one-dimensional rice-pile model which connects the 1D BTW
sandpile model (Phys. Rev. A 38, 364 (1988)) and the Oslo rice-pile model
(Phys. Rev. lett. 77, 107 (1997)) in a continuous manner. We found that for a
sufficiently large system, there is a sharp transition between the trivial
critical behaviour of the 1D BTW model and the self-organized critical (SOC)
behaviour. When there is SOC, the model belongs to a known universality class
with the avalanche exponent .Comment: 10 pages, 7 eps figure
Validity of the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics of the Universe Bounded by the Event Horizon in Holographic Dark Energy Model
In this letter, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law of
thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon in the holographic
dark energy model. The universe is chosen to be homogeneous and isotropic and
the validity of the first law has been assumed here. The matter in the universe
is taken in the form of non-interacting two fluid system- one component is the
holographic dark energy model and the other component is in the form of dust.Comment: 8 page
Unidentified EGRET Sources and the Extragalactic Gamma-Ray Background
The large majority of EGRET point sources remain to this day without an
identified low-energy counterpart. Whatever the nature of the EGRET
unidentified sources, faint unresolved objects of the same class must have a
contribution to the diffuse gamma-ray background: if most unidentified objects
are extragalactic, faint unresolved sources of the same class contribute to the
background, as a distinct extragalactic population; on the other hand, if most
unidentified sources are Galactic, their counterparts in external galaxies will
contribute to the unresolved emission from these systems. Understanding this
component of the gamma-ray background, along with other guaranteed
contributions from known sources, is essential in any attempt to use gamma-ray
observations to constrain exotic high-energy physics. Here, we follow an
empirical approach to estimate whether a potential contribution of unidentified
sources to the extragalactic gamma-ray background is likely to be important,
and we find that it is. Additionally, we comment on how the anticipated GLAST
measurement of the diffuse gamma-ray background will change, depending on the
nature of the majority of these sources.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in proceedings of "The Multi-Messenger

Study of heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si in high-purity Al-Si alloys with Sr addition
The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2010 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM InternationalAl-5 wt pct Si master-alloys with controlled Sr and/or P addition/s were produced using super purity Al 99.99 wt pct and Si 99.999 wt pct materials in an arc melter. The master-alloy was melt-spun resulting in the production of thin ribbons. The Al matrix of the ribbons contained entrained Al-Si eutectic droplets that were subsequently investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermodynamic calculations, and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to examine the effect of the Sr and P additions on eutectic undercoolings and nucleation phenomenon. Results indicate that, unlike P, Sr does not promote nucleation. Increasing Sr additions depressed the eutectic nucleation temperature. This may be a result of the formation of a Sr phase that could consume or detrimentally affect potent AlP nucleation sites. This work is financially supported by the

Solidification of Al alloys under electromagnetic pulses and characterization of the 3D microstructures under synchrotron x-ray tomography
A novel programmable electromagnetic pulse device was developed and used to study the solidification of Al-15 pct Cu and Al-35 pct Cu alloys. The pulsed magnetic fluxes and Lorentz forces generated inside the solidifying melts were simulated using finite element methods, and their effects on the solidification microstructures were characterized using electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray tomography. Using a discharging voltage of 120 V, a pulsed magnetic field with the peak Lorentz force of ~1.6 N was generated inside the solidifying Al-Cu melts which were showed sufficiently enough to disrupt the growth of the primary Al dendrites and the Al2Cu intermetallic phases. The microstructures exhibit a strong correlation to the characteristics of the applied pulse, forming a periodical pattern that resonates the frequency of the applied electromagnetic field
