Sobre a normatividade do significado: uma pseudo-restrição à semântica naturalizada

This work intends to discuss a problem very recent in philosophy of language, namely the problem of the normativity of meaning. The fundamental locus of discussion is the position of Saul Kripke in Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language, whose main ingredient is the idea that meaning is an intrinsically normative notion. Several philosophers have assumed this position as a kind of pre-theoretical restriction to assess reasonable theories, discarding all those that cannot accommodate, somehow, the “restriction of Kripke”. What animates the contemporary debate about this is precisely the possibility of disposing a descriptivist and naturalistic approach of meaning, based on the claim that such approaches fail or offer a plausible explanation of the relevant sense of normativity or fail to ensure a reasonable criterion for semantic correctness. The overall goal of this work is to show that, from the position of Wittgenstein in the Philosophical Investigations, it is not necessary to assume such a restriction, since in many ways it does seem to contradict our ordinary intuitions about the notions of “meaning” and “use”. This study aims to show, in other words, that the restriction of normativity is particularly harmless to a semantic model naturalized. The general strategy would be to deny the hypothesis that meaning is an intrinsically normative notion and show that its relevant normative aspects can be immediately derived from certain basic regularities of use.O presente trabalho pretende discutir um problema bastante recente em filosofia da linguagem, a saber: o problema da normatividade do significado. O lócus fundamental da discussão é a posição de Saul Kripke exposta em Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language, cujo ingrediente principal é a ideia de que o significado é uma noção intrinsecamente normativa. Diversos filósofos têm assumido esta posição como uma espécie de restrição pré-teórica para avaliar teorias razoáveis, descartando todas aquelas que não possam acomodar, de algum modo, a “restrição de Kripke”. O que anima o debate contemporâneo a este respeito é justamente a possibilidade de inviabilizar qualquer abordagem descritivista e naturalista do significado, com base na alegação de que tais abordagens ou não conseguem oferecer uma explicação plausível do sentido relevante de normatividade ou não conseguem garantir um critério razoável de correção semântica.O objetivo geral deste trabalho é mostrar que, a partir da posição de Wittgenstein nas Investigações Filosóficas, não é absolutamente necessário assumir tal restrição, já que em múltiplos sentidos ela parece mesmo contradizer nossas intuições ordinárias a respeito das noções de “significado” e “uso”. Este trabalho pretende mostrar, em outras palavras, que a restrição de normatividade é particularmente inofensiva para um modelo de semântica naturalizada. Out-Of-The_Money Monte Carlo Simulation Option Pricing: the join use of Importance Sampling and Descriptive Sampling

As in any Monte Carlo application, simulation option valuation produces imprecise estimates. In such an application, Descriptive Sampling (DS) has proven to be a powerful Variance Reduction Technique. However, this performance deteriorates as the probability of exercising an option decreases. In the case of out of the money options, the solution is to use Importance Sampling (IS). Following this track, the joint use of IS and DS is deserving of attention. Here, we evaluate and compare the benefits of using standard IS method with the joint use of IS and DS. We also investigate the influence of the problem dimensionality in the variance reduction achieved. Although the combination IS+DS showed gains over the standard IS implementation, the benefits in the case of out-of-the-money options were mainly due to the IS effect. On the other hand, the problem dimensionality did not affect the gains. Possible reasons for such results are discussed.

Knowledge and Power of the Civil Society: an empirical study of Brazilian professionals working in the NGOs

This study critically analyses the way Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operate in Brazil and their contribution to the development of the Brazilian civil society. The notion of "power fields" and "habitus", proposed by Bourdieu (1989; 1996), provides the theoretical backdrop to our discussions. This focusses largely on the recursive connection between structure and agency which resonates with the work of Fligstein (2006). This study seeks to critically analyse the learning and social practice developed by professionals in NGOs in their daily activities. This study is based on qualitative research and the results indicated that the knowledge produced by Brazilian NGOs, through the recursive connection between the agents of the fields and the structures underpinning them, contributes to the expansion and transformation of the field in which they operate. This perspective shows that the knowledge generated by this NGOs give them a certain level of power and influence in the Brazilian civil society

UNIVERSIDADE DE FRONTEIRA: UMA PERSPECTIVA DO ENSINO SUPERIOR BRASILEIRO NA CONTEMPORANEIDADE, PARA ALÉM DOS MUROS DO TERRITÓRIO NACIONAL

O objetivo desse estudo foi analisar uma perspectiva do ensino superior brasileiro na contemporaneidade, para além dos muros do território nacional, por intermédio de fontes bibliográficas. Os resultados alcançados evidenciaram que o intercâmbio cultural não só capacita, mas também permite observando o mundo sob nova ótica, aprimora o currículo do indivíduo e facilita sua inserção no mercado de trabalho por meio da vivência deste em outra cultura. Dessa forma, foi possível concluir que em meio a democratização do ensino viabilizado pelo governo, o intercambio demonstra-se como uma importante ferramenta para manter o jovem competitivo no mercado de trabalho. O intercâmbio é praticado por pessoas das mais diversificadas idades, classes sociais, etc. Apesar de ser uma atividade ainda com custo um tanto elevado, a elaboração de diversos programas, sobretudo por parte de universidades, tanto do setor público quanto da iniciativa privada, tem viabilizado essa realidade

ENLAÇANDO ESTUDOS SOBRE A COMPREENSÃO INTERDISCIPLINAR, UNIVERSIDADE E CONHECIMENTO NA CONTEMPORANEIDADE

O presente artigo pretende refletir a perspectiva interdisciplinar na universidade na sociedade contemporânea, contextualizando-a e caracterizando. O texto busca conceituar a interdisciplinaridade na Universidade a partir da perspectiva de diversos autores estabelecendo relações entre elas, partindo do pressuposto de que a Universidade é uma instituição transecular e transnacional, além de ser difusora do conhecimento ela também tem um papel extremamente importante na sociedade atual visto que é necessário formar indivíduos dotados de opinião crítica, reflexivas e conscientes do ambiente em que vivem. Apostar na interdisciplinaridade significa defender um novo tipo de pessoa, mais aberta, flexível, solidária, democrática e crítica. De acordo com Santos (2000) “A interdisciplinaridade não deve ser entendida como uma panaceia, mas como uma possibilidade de contribuição para maior resolutividade dos problemas enfrentados, assim como para a identificação de um objeto comum a vários profissionais”
