Indirect induction of radiation lymphomas in mice. Evidence for a novel, transmissible leukemogen.
The transmission of a lymphomagenic agent(s) from the bone marrow of irradiated mice to thymic target cells has been demonstrated by: (a) the induction of T cell lymphomas in nonirradiated thymic grafts implanted in irradiated, Thy-l-congenic mice, (b) the induction of T cell lymphomas of host origin in mice infused with bone marrow from irradiated, Thy-l-congenic donors. The latter procedure also yields an appreciable number of pre-B cell lymphomas of uncertain origin. The results confirm Kaplan's theory that radiation induces thymic lymphomas in mice by an indirect mechanism. However, the previously described radiation leukemia virus is clearly not involved in the majority of transferred lymphomas. We propose that the mediating agent in radiation lymphomagenesis is a novel, transmissible agent induced in the bone marrow, but exerting its transforming activity on cells in the thymus. Uptake induced swelling and thermal expansion of CFRP tendons
Carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons can be used as a corrosion-resistant alternative to steel for reinforcing or prestressing concrete in aggressive marine environments. The design lives of many civil marine structures often span decades and so the long-term durability of the internal reinforcement is important. One significant, yet overlooked, aspect of CFRP tendon durability is its susceptibility to swell on absorption of aqueous solutions including water and salt water. This paper reviews uptake-induced swelling in CFRP materials and draws comparisons with studies of swelling caused by thermal effects. The diffusion of aqueous solutions and their interaction with the polymer matrix are identified as the primary mechanisms responsible for the swelling. Experimental details are presented that correlate the uptake of water and salt water to swelling observed in CFRP tendons. The results are contrasted with both uptake- and thermal-driven behaviour cited in the literature. Lamé's equations are used to estimate the magnitude of the resulting stresses induced in the surrounding concrete. The practical significance of the findings is discussed, including the potential for cracking in the surrounding concrete cover and the implications for the tendon–concrete bond. Effects of solution exposure on the combined axial-shear behaviour of unidirectional CFRP rods
In fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) prestressed concrete applications, an FRP tendon must sustain high axial tensile stresses and, if cracks occur, additional dowel forces. The tendon may also be exposed to solutions and so the combined axial-shear stress performance after long-term environmental exposure is important. Experiments were conducted to investigate the combined axial-shear stress failure envelope for unidirectional carbon FRP tendons which had been exposed to either water, salt water or concrete pore solution at 60 °C for approximately 18 months. The underlying load resisting mechanisms were found to depend on the loading configuration, restraint effects and the initial stress state. When saturated, CFRP tendons are likely to exhibit a reduced shear stiffness. However, the ultimate limit state appeared to be fibre-dominated and was therefore less susceptible to reductions due to solution uptake effects.The first author was funded by an EPSRC DTA award.This is the accepted version of the original publication available at http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1359835X12001200. The geometry of the double-pulsar system J0737-3039 from systematic intensity variations
The recent discovery of J0737-3039A & B-two pulsars in a highly relativistic
orbit around one another - offers an unprecedented opportunity to study the
elusive physics of pulsar radio emission. The system contains a rapidly
rotating pulsar with a spin period of 22.7 ms and a slow companion with a spin
period of 2.77 s, hereafter referred to as 'A' and 'B', respectively. A unique
property of the system is that the pulsed radio flux from B increases
systematically by almost two orders-of-magnitude during two short portions of
each orbit. Here, we describe a geometrical model of the system that
simultaneously explains the intensity variations of B and makes definitive and
testable predictions for the future evolution of the emission properties of
both stars. Our model assumes that B's pulsed radio flux increases when
illuminated by emission from A. This model provides constraints on the spin
axis orientation and emission geometry of A and predicts that its pulse profile
will evolve considerably over the next several years due to geodetic precession
until it disappears entirely in 15-20 years
Dehydration accelerates reductions in cerebral blood flow during prolonged exercise in the heat without compromising brain metabolism
Dehydration hastens the decline in cerebral blood flow (CBF) during incremental exercise, while the cerebral metabolic rate for oxygen (CMRO2) is preserved. It remains unknown whether CMRO2 is also maintained during prolonged exercise in the heat and whether an eventual decline in CBF is coupled to fatigue. Two studies were undertaken. In study 1, ten male cyclists cycled in the heat for ~2 h with (control) and without fluid replacement (dehydration) while internal (ICA) and external (ECA) carotid artery blood flow and core and blood temperature were obtained. Arterial and internal jugular venous blood samples were assessed with dehydration to evaluate the CMRO2. In study 2 (8 males), middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCA Vmean) was measured during prolonged exercise to exhaustion in both dehydrated and euhydrated states. After a rise at the onset of exercise, ICA flow declined to baseline with progressive dehydration (P < 0.05). However, cerebral metabolism remained stable through enhanced oxygen and glucose extraction (P < 0.05). ECA flow increased for one hour but declined prior to exhaustion. Fluid ingestion maintained cerebral and extra-cranial perfusion throughout non-fatiguing exercise. During exhaustive exercise, however, euhydration delayed but did not prevent the decline in cerebral perfusion. In conclusion, during prolonged exercise in the heat dehydration accelerates the decline in CBF without affecting CMRO2 and also restricts extra-cranial perfusion. Thus fatigue is related to reduction in CBF and extra-cranial perfusion rather than in CMRO2.The study was supported by a grant from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, PepsiCo Inc, USA
Efficacy of nonselective optogenetic control of the medial septum over hippocampal oscillations: the influence of speed and implications for cognitive enhancement
Optogenetics holds great promise for both the dissection of neural circuits and the evaluation of theories centered on the temporal organizing properties of oscillations that underpin cognition. To date, no studies have examined the efficacy of optogenetic stimulation for altering hippocampal oscillations in freely moving wild-type rats, or how these alterations would affect performance on behavioral tasks. Here, we used an AAV virus to express ChR2 in the medial septum (MS) of wild-type rats, and optically stimulated septal neurons at 6 Hz and 30 Hz. We measured the corresponding effects of these stimulations on the oscillations of the MS and hippocampal subfields CA1 and CA3 in three different contexts: (1) With minimal movement while the rats sat in a confined chamber; (2) Explored a novel open field; and (3) Learned and performed a T-maze behavioral task. While control yellow light stimulation did not affect oscillations, 6-Hz blue light septal stimulations altered hippocampal theta oscillations in a manner that depended on the animal's mobility and speed. While the 30 Hz blue light septal stimulations only altered theta frequency in CA1 while the rat had limited mobility, it robustly increased the amplitude of hippocampal signals at 30 Hz in both regions in all three recording contexts. We found that animals were more likely to make a correct choice during Day 1 of T-maze training during both MS stimulation protocols than during control stimulation, and that improved performance was independent of theta frequency alterations
Multi-Regge kinematics and the moduli space of Riemann spheres with marked points
We show that scattering amplitudes in planar N = 4 Super Yang-Mills in
multi-Regge kinematics can naturally be expressed in terms of single-valued
iterated integrals on the moduli space of Riemann spheres with marked points.
As a consequence, scattering amplitudes in this limit can be expressed as
convolutions that can easily be computed using Stokes' theorem. We apply this
framework to MHV amplitudes to leading-logarithmic accuracy (LLA), and we prove
that at L loops all MHV amplitudes are determined by amplitudes with up to L +
4 external legs. We also investigate non-MHV amplitudes, and we show that they
can be obtained by convoluting the MHV results with a certain helicity flip
kernel. We classify all leading singularities that appear at LLA in the Regge
limit for arbitrary helicity configurations and any number of external legs.
Finally, we use our new framework to obtain explicit analytic results at LLA
for all MHV amplitudes up to five loops and all non-MHV amplitudes with up to

Menstrual cycle phase does not predict political conservatism
Recent authors have reported a relationship between women's fertility status, as indexed by menstrual cycle phase, and conservatism in moral, social and political values. We conducted a survey to test for the existence of a relationship between menstrual cycle day and conservatism. 2213 women reporting regular menstrual cycles provided data about their political views. Of these women, 2208 provided information about their cycle date, 1260 provided additional evidence of reliability in self-reported cycle date, and of these, 750 also indicated an absence of hormonal disruptors such as recent hormonal contraception use, breastfeeding or pregnancy. Cycle day was used to estimate day-specific fertility rate (probability of conception); political conservatism was measured via direct self-report and via responses to the "Moral Foundations” questionnaire. We also recorded relationship status, which has been reported to interact with menstrual cycle phase in determining political preferences. We found no evidence of a relationship between estimated cyclical fertility changes and conservatism, and no evidence of an interaction between relationship status and cyclical fertility in determining political attitudes. Our findings were robust to multiple inclusion/exclusion criteria and to different methods of estimating fertility and measuring conservatism. In summary, the relationship between cycle-linked reproductive parameters and conservatism may be weaker or less reliable than previously thought
Ethics and practice of trials within cohorts: An emerging pragmatic trial design
BACKGROUND: With increasing emphasis on pragmatic trials, new randomized clinical trial designs are being proposed to enhance the "real world" nature of the data generated. We describe one such design, appropriate for unmasked pragmatic clinical trials in which the control arm receives usual care, called "Trials within Cohorts" that is increasingly used in various countries because of its efficiency in recruitment, advantages in reducing subject burden, and ability to better mimic real-world consent processes. METHODS: Descriptive, ethical, and US regulatory analysis of the Trials within Cohorts design. RESULTS: Trials within Cohorts design involves, after recruitment into a cohort, randomization of eligible subjects, followed by an asymmetric treatment of the two arms: those selected for the experimental arm provide informed consent for the intervention trial, while the data from the control arm are used based on prior broad permission. Thus, unlike the traditional Zelen post-randomization consent design, the cohort participants are informed about future research within the cohort; however, the extent of this disclosure currently varies among studies. Thus, ethical analysis is provided for two types of situations: when the pre-randomization disclosure and consent regarding the embedded trials are fairly explicit and detailed versus when they consist of only general statements about future data use. These differing ethical situations could have implications for how ethics review committees apply US research rules regarding waivers and alterations of informed consent. CONCLUSION: Trials within Cohorts is a promising new pragmatic randomized controlled trial design that is being increasingly used in various countries. Although the asymmetric consent procedures for the experimental versus control arm subjects can initially raise ethical concerns, it is ethically superior to previous post-randomization consent designs and can have important advantages over traditional trial designs

The Supreme Court has looked to the rights of corporate shareholders in determining the rights of union members and non-members to control political spending, and vice versa. The Court sometimes assumes that if shareholders disapprove of corporate political expression, they can easily sell their shares or exercise control over corporate spending. This assumption is mistaken. Because of how capital is saved and invested, most individual shareholders cannot obtain full information about corporate political activities, even after the fact, nor can they prevent their savings from being used to speak in ways with which they disagree. Individual shareholders have no “opt out” rights or practical ability to avoid subsidizing corporate political expression with which they disagree. Nor do individuals have the practical option to refrain from putting their savings into equity investments, as doing so would impose damaging economic penalties and ignore conventional financial guidance for individual investors
