Parton Fragmentation within an Identified Jet at NNLL
The fragmentation of a light parton i to a jet containing a light energetic
hadron h, where the momentum fraction of this hadron as well as the invariant
mass of the jet is measured, is described by "fragmenting jet functions". We
calculate the one-loop matching coefficients J_{ij} that relate the fragmenting
jet functions G_i^h to the standard, unpolarized fragmentation functions D_j^h
for quark and gluon jets. We perform this calculation using various IR
regulators and show explicitly how the IR divergences cancel in the matching.
We derive the relationship between the coefficients J_{ij} and the quark and
gluon jet functions. This provides a cross-check of our results. As an
application we study the process e+ e- to X pi+ on the Upsilon(4S) resonance
where we measure the momentum fraction of the pi+ and restrict to the dijet
limit by imposing a cut on thrust T. In our analysis we sum the logarithms of
tau=1-T in the cross section to next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy
(NNLL). We find that including contributions up to NNLL (or NLO) can have a
large impact on extracting fragmentation functions from e+ e- to dijet + h.Comment: expanded introduction, typos fixed, journal versio
Oral tolerance to cancer can be abrogated by T regulatory cell inhibition
Oral administration of tumour cells induces an immune hypo-responsiveness known as oral tolerance. We have previously shown that oral tolerance to a cancer is tumour antigen specific, non-cross-reactive and confers a tumour growth advantage. We investigated the utilisation of regulatory T cell (Treg) depletion on oral tolerance to a cancer and its ability to control tumour growth. Balb/C mice were gavage fed homogenised tumour tissue – JBS fibrosarcoma (to induce oral tolerance to a cancer), or PBS as control. Growth of subcutaneous JBS tumours were measured; splenic tissue excised and flow cytometry used to quantify and compare systemic Tregs and T effector (Teff) cell populations. Prior to and/or following tumour feeding, mice were intraperitoneally administered anti-CD25, to inactivate systemic Tregs, or given isotype antibody as a control. Mice which were orally tolerised prior to subcutaneous tumour induction, displayed significantly higher systemic Treg levels (14% vs 6%) and faster tumour growth rates than controls (p<0.05). Complete regression of tumours were only seen after Treg inactivation and occurred in all groups - this was not inhibited by tumour feeding. The cure rates for Treg inactivation were 60% during tolerisation, 75% during tumour growth and 100% during inactivation for both tolerisation and tumour growth. Depletion of Tregs gave rise to an increased number of Teff cells. Treg depletion post-tolerisation and post-tumour induction led to the complete regression of all tumours on tumour bearing mice. Oral administration of tumour tissue, confers a tumour growth advantage and is accompanied by an increase in systemic Treg levels. The administration of anti-CD25 Ab decreased Treg numbers and caused an increase in Teffs. Most notably Treg cell inhibition overcame established oral tolerance with consequent tumor regression, especially relevant to foregut cancers where oral tolerance is likely to be induced by the shedding of tumour tissue into the gut

Liverpool Telescope 2: beginning the design phase
The Liverpool Telescope is a fully robotic 2-metre telescope located at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the Canary Island of La Palma. The telescope began routine science operations in 2004, and currently seven simultaneously mounted instruments support a broad science programme, with a focus on transient followup and other time domain topics well suited to the characteristics of robotic observing. Work has begun on a successor facility with the working title ‘Liverpool Telescope 2’. We are entering a new era of time domain astronomy with new discovery facilities across the electromagnetic spectrum, and the next generation of optical survey facilities such as LSST are set to revolutionise the field of transient science in particular. The fully robotic Liverpool Telescope 2 will have a 4-metre aperture and an improved response time, and will be designed to meet the challenges of this new era. Following a conceptual design phase, we are about to begin the detailed design which will lead towards the start of construction in 2018, for first light ∼2022. The Quark Beam Function at NNLL
In hard collisions at a hadron collider the most appropriate description of
the initial state depends on what is measured in the final state. Parton
distribution functions (PDFs) evolved to the hard collision scale Q are
appropriate for inclusive observables, but not for measurements with a specific
number of hard jets, leptons, and photons. Here the incoming protons are probed
and lose their identity to an incoming jet at a scale \mu_B << Q, and the
initial state is described by universal beam functions. We discuss the
field-theoretic treatment of beam functions, and show that the beam function
has the same RG evolution as the jet function to all orders in perturbation
theory. In contrast to PDF evolution, the beam function evolution does not mix
quarks and gluons and changes the virtuality of the colliding parton at fixed
momentum fraction. At \mu_B, the incoming jet can be described perturbatively,
and we give a detailed derivation of the one-loop matching of the quark beam
function onto quark and gluon PDFs. We compute the associated NLO Wilson
coefficients and explicitly verify the cancellation of IR singularities. As an
application, we give an expression for the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic

Modelling the nucleon wave function from soft and hard processes
Current light-cone wave functions for the nucleon are unsatisfactory since
they are in conflict with the data of the nucleon's Dirac form factor at large
momentum transfer. Therefore, we attempt a determination of a new wave function
respecting theoretical ideas on its parameterization and satisfying the
following constraints: It should provide a soft Feynman contribution to the
proton's form factor in agreement with data; it should be consistent with
current parameterizations of the valence quark distribution functions and
lastly it should provide an acceptable value for the \jp \to N \bar N decay
width. The latter process is calculated within the modified perturbative
approach to hard exclusive reactions. A simultaneous fit to the three sets of
data leads to a wave function whose -dependent part, the distribution
amplitude, shows the same type of asymmetry as those distribution amplitudes
constrained by QCD sum rules. The asymmetry is however much more moderate as in
those amplitudes. Our distribution amplitude resembles the asymptotic one in

Factorization and NNLL Resummation for Higgs Production with a Jet Veto
Using methods of effective field theory, we derive the first all-order
factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson production cross section with a jet
veto, imposed by means of a standard sequential recombination jet algorithm.
Like in the case of small-q_T resummation in Drell-Yan and Higgs production,
the factorization is affected by a collinear anomaly. Our analysis provides the
basis for a systematic resummation of large logarithms log(m_H/p_T^veto) beyond
leading-logarithmic order. Specifically, we present predictions for the
resummed jet-veto cross section and efficiency at next-to-next-to-leading
logarithmic order. Our results have important implications for Higgs-boson
searches at the LHC, where a jet veto is required to suppress background

Inclusive double-quarkonium production at the Large Hadron Collider
Based on the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism, we
investigate inclusive productions of two spin-triplet S-wave quarkonia
pp->2J/psi+X, 2Upsilon+X, and J/psi+Upsilon+X at the CERN Large Hadron
Collider. The total production rates integrated over the rapidity (y) and
transverse-momentum (p_T) ranges |y|<2.4 and p_T<50 GGeV are predicted to be
sigma[pp->2J/psi+X] = 22 (35) nb, sigma[pp->2Upsilon+X] = 24 (49) pb, and
sigma[pp->J/psi+Upsilon+X] = 7 (13) pb at the center-of-momentum energy sqrt{s}
= 7 (14) TeV. In order to provide predictions that can be useful in both small-
and large-p_T regions, we do not employ the fragmentation approximation and we
include the spin-triplet S-wave color-singlet and color-octet channels for each
quarkonium final state at leading order in the strong coupling. The p_T
distributions of pp->2J/psi+X and 2Upsilon+X in the low-p_T region are
dominated by the color-singlet contributions. At leading order in the strong
coupling, the color-singlet channel is absent for pp->J/psi+Upsilon+X.
Therefore, the process pp->J/psi+Upsilon+X may provide a useful probe to the

On soft singularities at three loops and beyond
We report on further progress in understanding soft singularities of massless
gauge theory scattering amplitudes. Recently, a set of equations was derived
based on Sudakov factorization, constraining the soft anomalous dimension
matrix of multi-leg scattering amplitudes to any loop order, and relating it to
the cusp anomalous dimension. The minimal solution to these equations was shown
to be a sum over color dipoles. Here we explore potential contributions to the
soft anomalous dimension that go beyond the sum-over-dipoles formula. Such
contributions are constrained by factorization and invariance under rescaling
of parton momenta to be functions of conformally invariant cross ratios.
Therefore, they must correlate the color and kinematic degrees of freedom of at
least four hard partons, corresponding to gluon webs that connect four eikonal
lines, which first appear at three loops. We analyze potential contributions,
combining all available constraints, including Bose symmetry, the expected
degree of transcendentality, and the singularity structure in the limit where
two hard partons become collinear. We find that if the kinematic dependence is
solely through products of logarithms of cross ratios, then at three loops
there is a unique function that is consistent with all available constraints.
If polylogarithms are allowed to appear as well, then at least two additional
