400-photon-per-pulse ultrashort pulse autocorrelation measurement with aperiodically poled lithium niobate waveguides at 1.55 μm
[[abstract]]We demonstrate ultrasensitive intensity autocorrelation measurements of subpicosecond optical pulses in the telecommunication band by using aperiodically poled lithium niobate (A-PPLN) waveguides. The tightly confined optical beam in the waveguides and the chirped poling period facilitate simultaneous high second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency and broad phase-matching (PM) bandwidth. The resulting measurement sensitivity is 3.2 x 10(-7) mW(2), similar to500 times better than the previous record for intensity autocorrelations. We also show that chirped A-PPLN waveguides retain nearly the same SHG efficiency as the unchirped guide as long as the PM bandwidth is not significantly broader than the input spectrum.[[fileno]]2030135010003[[department]]電機工程學
Efficient mining of frequent item sets on large uncertain databases
The data handled in emerging applications like location-based services, sensor monitoring systems, and data integration, are often inexact in nature. In this paper, we study the important problem of extracting frequent item sets from a large uncertain database, interpreted under the Possible World Semantics (PWS). This issue is technically challenging, since an uncertain database contains an exponential number of possible worlds. By observing that the mining process can be modeled as a Poisson binomial distribution, we develop an approximate algorithm, which can efficiently and accurately discover frequent item sets in a large uncertain database. We also study the important issue of maintaining the mining result for a database that is evolving (e.g., by inserting a tuple). Specifically, we propose incremental mining algorithms, which enable Probabilistic Frequent Item set (PFI) results to be refreshed. This reduces the need of re-executing the whole mining algorithm on the new database, which is often more expensive and unnecessary. We examine how an existing algorithm that extracts exact item sets, as well as our approximate algorithm, can support incremental mining. All our approaches support both tuple and attribute uncertainty, which are two common uncertain database models. Mercury pollution in the lake sediments and catchment soils of anthropogenically-disturbed sites across England
Sediment cores and soil samples were taken from nine lakes and their catchments across England with varying degrees of direct human disturbance. Mercury (Hg) analysis demonstrated a range of impacts, many from local sources, resulting from differing historical and contemporary site usage and management. Lakes located in industrially important areas showed clear evidence for early Hg pollution with concentrations in sediments reaching 400–1600 ng g−1 prior to the mid-19th century. Control of inputs resulting from local management practices and a greater than 90% reduction in UK Hg emissions since 1970 were reflected by reduced Hg pollution in some lakes. However, having been a sink for Hg deposition for centuries, polluted catchment soils are now the major Hg source for most lakes and consequently recovery from reduced Hg deposition is being delayed
End-to-End Learning of Video Super-Resolution with Motion Compensation
Learning approaches have shown great success in the task of super-resolving
an image given a low resolution input. Video super-resolution aims for
exploiting additionally the information from multiple images. Typically, the
images are related via optical flow and consecutive image warping. In this
paper, we provide an end-to-end video super-resolution network that, in
contrast to previous works, includes the estimation of optical flow in the
overall network architecture. We analyze the usage of optical flow for video
super-resolution and find that common off-the-shelf image warping does not
allow video super-resolution to benefit much from optical flow. We rather
propose an operation for motion compensation that performs warping from low to
high resolution directly. We show that with this network configuration, video
super-resolution can benefit from optical flow and we obtain state-of-the-art
results on the popular test sets. We also show that the processing of whole
images rather than independent patches is responsible for a large increase in

Lagrangian evolution of DMS during the Southern Ocean gas exchange experiment: The effects of vertical mixing and biological community shift
Concentrations of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) are highly variable in time and space. What is driving the variability in DMS(P), and can those variability be explained by physical processes and changes in the biological community? During the Southern Ocean Gas Exchange Experiment (SO GasEx) in the austral fall of 2008, two 3He/SF6 labeled patches were created in the surface water. SF6 and DMS were surveyed continuously in a Lagrangian framework, while direct measurements of air-sea exchange further constrained the gas budgets. Turbulent diffusivity at the base of the mixed layer was estimated from SF6 profiles and used to calculate the vertical fluxes of DMS and nutrients. Increasing mixed layer nutrient concentrations due to mixing were associated with a shift in the phytoplankton community structure, which in turned likely affected the sulfur dynamics on timescales of days. DMS concentration as well as air-sea DMS flux appeared to be decoupled from the DMSP concentration, possibly due to grazing and bacterial DMS production. Contrary to expectations, in an environment with high winds and modest productivity, physical processes (air-sea exchange, photochemistry, vertical mixing) only accounted for a small fraction of DMS loss from the surface water. Organization of a Web site is important to help users get the most out of the site. A good Web site should help visitors find the information they want easily. Visitors typically find information by searching for selected terms of interest or by following links from one Web page to another. The first approach is more useful if the visitor knows exactly what he is seeking, while the second approach is useful when the visitor has less of a preconceived notion about what he wants. The organization of a Web site is especially important in the latter case. Traditionally, Web site organization is done by hand. In this paper, we introduce the problem of automatic Web site construction and propose a solution for solving a major step of the problem based on decision tree algorithms. A new insight into the coupler curves of the RCCC four-bar linkage
The final publication is available at link.springer.comBased on the condition for four points to lie on the unit sphere, derived using Distance Geometry, a new mathematical formulation for the coupler curves of the RCCC linkage is presented. The relevance of this formulation is not only its simplicity, but the elegant way in which we can obtain the derivative of any variable with respect to any other, and the simple way in which intervals of monotonicity can be detected. All these results are compactly expressed in terms of Gramians and, as a consequence, they have a direct geometric meaning contrarily to what happens with previous approaches based on kinematic loop equations.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Histone deacetylase adaptation in single ventricle heart disease and a young animal model of right ventricular hypertrophy.
BackgroundHistone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are promising therapeutics for various forms of cardiac diseases. The purpose of this study was to assess cardiac HDAC catalytic activity and expression in children with single ventricle (SV) heart disease of right ventricular morphology, as well as in a rodent model of right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH).MethodsHomogenates of right ventricle (RV) explants from non-failing controls and children born with a SV were assayed for HDAC catalytic activity and HDAC isoform expression. Postnatal 1-day-old rat pups were placed in hypoxic conditions, and echocardiographic analysis, gene expression, HDAC catalytic activity, and isoform expression studies of the RV were performed.ResultsClass I, IIa, and IIb HDAC catalytic activity and protein expression were elevated in the hearts of children born with a SV. Hypoxic neonatal rats demonstrated RVH, abnormal gene expression, elevated class I and class IIb HDAC catalytic activity, and protein expression in the RV compared with those in the control.ConclusionsThese data suggest that myocardial HDAC adaptations occur in the SV heart and could represent a novel therapeutic target. Although further characterization of the hypoxic neonatal rat is needed, this animal model may be suitable for preclinical investigations of pediatric RV disease and could serve as a useful model for future mechanistic studies
Observation of second-harmonic generation induced by pure spin currents
Extensive efforts are currently being devoted to developing a new electronic
technology, called spintronics, where the spin of electrons is explored to
carry information. [1,2] Several techniques have been developed to generate
pure spin currents in many materials and structures. [3-10] However, there is
still no method available that can be used to directly detect pure spin
currents, which carry no net charge current and no net magnetization.
Currently, studies of pure spin currents rely on measuring the induced spin
accumulation with optical techniques [5, 11-13] or spin-valve configurations.
[14-17] However, the spin accumulation does not directly reflect the spatial
distribution or temporal dynamics of the pure spin current, and therefore
cannot monitor the pure spin current in a real-time and real-space fashion.
This imposes severe constraints on research in this field. Here we demonstrate
a second-order nonlinear optical effect of the pure spin current. We show that
such a nonlinear optical effect, which has never been explored before, can be
used for the non-invasive, non-destructive, and real-time imaging of pure spin
currents. Since this detection scheme does not rely on optical resonances, it
can be generally applied in a wide range of materials with different electronic
bandstructures. Furthermore, the control of nonlinear optical properties of
materials with pure spin currents may have potential applications in photonics

A Novel Unsupervised Method to Identify Genes Important in the Anti-viral Response: Application to Interferon/Ribavirin in Hepatitis C Patients
Background: Treating hepatitis C with interferon/ribavirin results in a varied response in terms of decrease in viral titer and ultimate outcome. Marked responders have a sharp decline in viral titer within a few days of treatment initiation, whereas in other patients there is no effect on the virus (poor responders). Previous studies have shown that combination therapy modifies expression of hundreds of genes in vitro and in vivo. However, identifying which, if any, of these genes have a role in viral clearance remains challenging. Aims: The goal of this paper is to link viral levels with gene expression and thereby identify genes that may be responsible for early decrease in viral titer. Methods: Microarrays were performed on RNA isolated from PBMC of patients undergoing interferon/ribavirin therapy. Samples were collected at pre-treatment (day 0), and 1, 2, 7, 14 and 28 days after initiating treatment. A novel method was applied to identify genes that are linked to a decrease in viral titer during interferon/ribavirin treatment. The method uses the relationship between inter-patient gene expression based proximities and inter-patient viral titer based proximities to define the association between microarray gene expression measurements of each gene and viral-titer measurements. Results: We detected 36 unique genes whose expressions provide a clustering of patients that resembles viral titer based clustering of patients. These genes include IRF7, MX1, OASL and OAS2, viperin and many ISG's of unknown function. Conclusion: The genes identified by this method appear to play a major role in the reduction of hepatitis C virus during the early phase of treatment. The method has broad utility and can be used to analyze response to any group of factors influencing biological outcome such as antiviral drugs or anti-cancer agents where microarray data are available. © 2007 Brodsky et al
