Assessment of the Nutrient Status of Soil under Chromolaena odorata L. (Siam Weed) Fallow in Moniya, Oyo State Southwestern Nigeria
In Nigeria, soil fertility restoration for improved agricultural production is a recurrent issue of immense importance mostly with her ever increasing population currently above 150 million. Therefore, identifying sustainable ecological practice to improve soil fertility is one of the surest ways to enhance food security. The study examined the trend in soil nutrient under the canopy of Chromolaena odorata of zero, 6 months, 1 yr and 2 yr fallows. The grid system of sampling was employed to collect soil samples from ten quadrats of 5m x 5m in each of the Chromolaena fallows. Result showed that C. odorata, a plant of secondary succession had significant effect on the buildup of nutrients in the soil, as the contents of soil properties under the canopy of C. odorata progressively increased with the age of fallows, which perhaps was affected by the increase in Chromolaena plant and cover. The pH level of soils under the canopy of C. odorata especially in the 2nd year fallow considerably favoured the increase in the contents of essential elements in the soil. However, to improve soil fertility, the study suggested that C. plantshould be planted along with staple crops to help minimize nutrient loss, and also, fallows with C. plantsshould be allowed for a reasonable number of years to facilitate nutrient accretion before cultivation.Keywords: Chromolaena Density, Nutrient Status, Physical and Chemical Properties, Nutrient Accretio
Perceived Factors Influencing the Choice of Antenatal Care and Delivery Centres among Childbearing Women In Ibadan North South-Western, Nigeria
The aim of the study was to investigate the supposed factors apart from socioeconomic influencing the choice of antenatal care and delivery centres among childbearing women in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State. Data were obtained through the administration of two hundred and thirty-one (231) copies of structured questionnaire to childbearing women in four antenatal centres normally utilized in the area. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools. The Chi Square result indicated that awareness of ANC significantly influenced place of delivery (p<0.05), while the result of Pearson’s correlation indicated a low negative and insignificant association between distance and utilization of ANC and delivery services (r-Value = -0.04, p>0.05). The study revealed that husband’s decision or preference of ANC and privacy constituted the prominent factors that influenced the choice of ANC as well as place of delivery. It further revealed that the highest patronage of ANC and delivery centres was achieved with distance of <5km, while the lowest patronage was achieved when the approximate distance was > 10km. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that husbands should be encouraged and educated on the need to give their wives free hand in deciding places of ANC and delivery centres.Keywords: Antenatal Care, Utilization, Socioeconomic Characteristics, Childbearing Wome
Barriers to and determinants of the use of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy in Cross River State, Nigeria: a cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND: Malaria in pregnancy (MIP) has serious consequences for the woman, unborn child and newborn. The use of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine for the intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (SP-IPTp) is low in malaria endemic areas, including some regions of Nigeria. However, little is known about pregnant women’s compliance with the SP-IPTp national guidelines in primary health care (PHC) facilities in the south-south region of Nigeria. The aim of this study was to identify the barriers to and determinants of the use of SP-IPTp among pregnant women attending ANC in PHC facilities in Cross River State, south-south region of Nigeria. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2011 among 400 ANC attendees aged 15–49 years recruited through multistage sampling. Binary logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with the use of SP-IPTp in the study population. RESULTS: Use of SP-IPTp was self-reported by 41 % of the total respondents. Lack of autonomy in the households to receive sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) during ANC was the main barrier to use of IPTp (83 %). Other barriers were stock-outs of free SP (33 %) and poor supervision of SP ingestion by directly observed treatment among those who obtained SP from ANC clinics (36/110 = 33 %). In the multivariate logistic regression, the odds of using SP-IPTp was increased by the knowledge of the use of insecticide treated nets (ITNs) (OR = 2.13, 95 % CI: 1.70–3.73) and SP (OR = 22.13, 95 % CI: 8.10–43.20) for the prevention of MIP. Use of ITNs also increased the odds of using SP-IPTp (OR = 2.38, 95 % CI: 1.24–12.31). CONCLUSIONS: Use of SP-IPTp was low and was associated with knowledge of the use of ITNs and SP as well as the use of ITNs for the prevention of MIP. There is a need to strengthen PHC systems and address barriers to the usage of SP-IPTp in order to reduce the burden of MIP. FCC Physics Opportunities: Future Circular Collider Conceptual Design Report Volume 1
We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics
HE-LHC: The High-Energy Large Hadron Collider: Future Circular Collider Conceptual Design Report Volume 4
In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (EPPSU), the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. The FCC study covered an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee), the corresponding 100 km tunnel infrastructure, as well as the physics opportunities of these two colliders, and a high-energy LHC, based on FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the third volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the hadron collider FCC-hh. It summarizes the FCC-hh physics discovery opportunities, presents the FCC-hh accelerator design, performance reach, and staged operation plan, discusses the underlying technologies, the civil engineering and technical infrastructure, and also sketches a possible implementation. Combining ingredients from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the high-luminosity LHC upgrade and adding novel technologies and approaches, the FCC-hh design aims at significantly extending the energy frontier to 100 TeV. Its unprecedented centre-of-mass collision energy will make the FCC-hh a unique instrument to explore physics beyond the Standard Model, offering great direct sensitivity to new physics and discoveries
FCC-ee: The Lepton Collider: Future Circular Collider Conceptual Design Report Volume 2
In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched, as an international collaboration hosted by CERN. This study covers a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee) and an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), which could, successively, be installed in the same 100 km tunnel. The scientific capabilities of the integrated FCC programme would serve the worldwide community throughout the 21st century. The FCC study also investigates an LHC energy upgrade, using FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the second volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the electron-positron collider FCC-ee. After summarizing the physics discovery opportunities, it presents the accelerator design, performance reach, a staged operation scenario, the underlying technologies, civil engineering, technical infrastructure, and an implementation plan. FCC-ee can be built with today’s technology. Most of the FCC-ee infrastructure could be reused for FCC-hh. Combining concepts from past and present lepton colliders and adding a few novel elements, the FCC-ee design promises outstandingly high luminosity. This will make the FCC-ee a unique precision instrument to study the heaviest known particles (Z, W and H bosons and the top quark), offering great direct and indirect sensitivity to new physics

The stimulatory effect of intragastric administration of crude aqueous extract of Ageratum Conyzoides on gastric acid secretion in rats
The effect of an aqueous leaf of Ageratum conyzoides on gastric acid secretion in rats was investigated in 18 albino rats of Wistar strain. The rats were divided into 2 groups of 9 each. Gastric acid output was determined by continuous perfusion in urethane anaesthetized rats. Control gastric acid output was obtained usign 0.9% NaCl as perfusate, and extract-induced gastric output was obtained by perfusion with a 0.1% solution of A. conyzoides.
