    Raman frequency shift in oxygen functionalized carbon nanotubes

    In terms of lattice dynamics theory, we study the vibrational properties of the oxygen-functionalized single wall carbon nanotubes (O-SWCNs). Due to the C-O and O-O interactions, many degenerate phonon modes are split and even some new phonon modes are obtained, different from the bare SWCNs. A distinct Raman shift is found in both the radial breathing mode and G modes, depending not only on the tube diameter and chirality but also on oxygen coverage and adsorption configurations. With the oxygen coverage increasing, interesting, a nonmonotonic up- and down-shift is observed in G modes, which is contributed to the competition between the bond expansion and contraction, there coexisting in the functionalized carbon nanotube.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    Electron localization : band-by-band decomposition, and application to oxides

    Using a plane wave pseudopotential approach to density functional theory we investigate the electron localization length in various oxides. For this purpose, we first set up a theory of the band-by-band decomposition of this quantity, more complex than the decomposition of the spontaneous polarization (a related concept), because of the interband coupling. We show its interpretation in terms of Wannier functions and clarify the effect of the pseudopotential approximation. We treat the case of different oxides: BaO, α\alpha-PbO, BaTiO3_3 and PbTiO3_3. We also investigate the variation of the localization tensor during the ferroelectric phase transitions of BaTiO3_3 as well as its relationship with the Born effective charges

    Ion-beam modification of the magnetic properties of GaMnAs epilayers

    We study the controlled introduction of defects in GaMnAs by irradiating the samples with energetic ion beams, which modify the magnetic properties of the DMS. Our study focuses on the low-carrier-density regime, starting with as-grown GaMnAs films and decreasing even further the number of carriers, through a sequence of irradiation doses. We did a systematic study of magnetization as a function of temperature and of the irradiation ion dose. We also performed in-situ room temperature resistivity measurements as a function of the ion dose. We observe that both magnetic and transport properties of the samples can be experimentally manipulated by controlling the ion-beam parameters. For highly irradiated samples, the magnetic measurements indicate the formation of magnetic clusters together with a transition to an insulating state. The experimental data are compared with mean-field calculations for magnetization. The independent control of disorder and carrier density in the calculations allows further insight on the individual role of this two factors in the ion-beam-induced modification of GaMnAs.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

    Constraining non-minimally coupled tachyon fields by Noether symmetry

    A model for a spatially flat homogeneous and isotropic Universe whose gravitational sources are a pressureless matter field and a tachyon field non-minimally coupled to the gravitational field is analyzed. Noether symmetry is used to find the expressions for the potential density and for the coupling function, and it is shown that both must be exponential functions of the tachyon field. Two cosmological solutions are investigated: (i) for the early Universe whose only source of the gravitational field is a non-minimally coupled tachyon field which behaves as an inflaton and leads to an exponential accelerated expansion and (ii) for the late Universe whose gravitational sources are a pressureless matter field and a non-minimally coupled tachyon field which plays the role of dark energy and is the responsible of the decelerated-accelerated transition period.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures.     Interplay of initial deformation and Coulomb proximity on nuclear decay

    Alpha particles emitted from an excited projectile-like fragment (PLF*) formed in a peripheral collision of two intermediate-energy heavy ions exhibit a strong preference for emission towards the target-like fragment (TLF). The interplay of the initial deformation of the PLF* caused by the reaction, Coulomb proximity, and the rotation of the PLF* results in the observed anisotropic angular distribution. Changes in the shape of the angular distribution with excitation energy are interpreted as being the result of forming more elongated initial geometries in the more peripheral collisions.Comment: 4 figure

    Fermion localization on degenerate and critical branes

    In this work we analyze the localization of fermions on degenerate and critical Bloch branes. This is done directly on physical coordinates, in constrast to some works that has been using conformal coordinates. We find the range of coupling constants of the interaction of fermions with the scalar fields that allow us to have normalizable fermion zero-mode localized on the brane on both, critical and degenerate Bloch branes. In the case of critical branes our results agree with those found in [Class. Quantum Grav. \textbf{27} (2010) 185001]. The results on fermion localization on degenerate Bloch branes are new. We also propose a coupling of fermions to the scalar fields which leads to localization of massless fermion on both sides of a double-brane.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    Fermion localization on asymmetric two-field thick branes

    In this paper we investigate the localization of fermions on asymmetric thick branes generated by two scalars ϕ\phi and χ\chi. In order to trap fermions on the asymmetric branes with kink-like warp factors, the couplings with the background scalars ηΨˉF(χ,ϕ)Ψ\eta\bar{\Psi}F(\chi,\phi)\Psi are introduced, where F(χ,ϕ)F(\chi,\phi) is a function of ϕ\phi and χ\chi. We find that the coupling ηΨˉχϕΨ\eta\bar{\Psi}\chi\phi\Psi do not support the localization of 4-dimensional fermions on the branes. While, for the case ηΨˉχΨ+ηΨˉϕΨ\eta\bar{\Psi}\chi\Psi+\eta'\bar{\Psi}\phi\Psi, which is the kink-fermion coupling corresponding to one-scalar-generated brane scenarios, the zero mode of left-handed fermions could be trapped on the branes under some conditions.Comment: v2: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted by CQ
