Pointlike probes of superstring-theoretic superfluids
In analogy with an experimental setup used in liquid helium, we use a
pointlike probe to study superfluids which have a gravity dual. In the gravity
description, the probe is represented by a hanging string. We demonstrate that
there is a critical velocity below which the probe particle feels neither drag
nor stochastic forces. Above this critical velocity, there is power-law scaling
for the drag force, and the stochastic forces are characterized by a finite,
velocity-dependent temperature. This temperature participates in two simple and
general relations between the drag force and stochastic forces. The formula we
derive for the critical velocity indicates that the low-energy excitations are
massless, and they demonstrate the power of stringy methods in describing

Fermion correlators in non-abelian holographic superconductors
We consider fermion correlators in non-abelian holographic superconductors.
The spectral function of the fermions exhibits several interesting features
such as support in displaced Dirac cones and an asymmetric distribution of
normal modes. These features are compared to similar ones observed in angle
resolved photoemission experiments on high T_c superconductors. Along the way
we elucidate some properties of p-wave superconductors in AdS_4 and discuss the
construction of SO(4) superconductors.Comment: 49 pages, 11 figure
Holographic metastability
We show how supersymmetric QCD in a slice of AdS can naturally acquire
metastable vacua. The formulation closely follows that of Intriligator, Seiberg
and Shih (ISS), with an "electric" sector on the UV brane and a "magnetic"
sector on the IR brane. However the 't Hooft anomaly matching that constrains
the Seiberg duality central to ISS is replaced by anomaly inflow and
cancellation, and the source of strong coupling is the CFT to which the theory
couples rather than the gauge groups. The theory contains an anomaly free
R-symmetry that, when broken by UV effects, leads to an O'Raifeartaigh model on
the IR brane. In contrast to ISS, the R-symmetry breaking in the UV can be
maximal, and yet the R-symmetry breaking in the IR theory remains under strict
control: there is no need for retrofitting of small parameters.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figure
Trial protocol OPPTIMUM : does progesterone prophylaxis for the prevention of preterm labour improve outcome?
Background
Preterm birth is a global problem, with a prevalence of 8 to 12% depending on location. Several large trials and systematic reviews have shown progestogens to be effective in preventing or delaying preterm birth in selected high risk women with a singleton pregnancy (including those with a short cervix or previous preterm birth). Although an improvement in short term neonatal outcomes has been shown in some trials these have not consistently been confirmed in meta-analyses. Additionally data on longer term outcomes is limited to a single trial where no difference in outcomes was demonstrated at four years of age of the child, despite those in the “progesterone” group having a lower incidence of preterm birth.
Methods/Design
The OPPTIMUM study is a double blind randomized placebo controlled trial to determine whether progesterone prophylaxis to prevent preterm birth has long term neonatal or infant benefit. Specifically it will study whether, in women with singleton pregnancy and at high risk of preterm labour, prophylactic vaginal natural progesterone, 200 mg daily from 22 – 34 weeks gestation, compared to placebo, improves obstetric outcome by lengthening pregnancy thus reducing the incidence of preterm delivery (before 34 weeks), improves neonatal outcome by reducing a composite of death and major morbidity, and leads to improved childhood cognitive and neurosensory outcomes at two years of age. Recruitment began in 2009 and is scheduled to close in Spring 2013. As of May 2012, over 800 women had been randomized in 60 sites.
Discussion
OPPTIMUM will provide further evidence on the effectiveness of vaginal progesterone for prevention of preterm birth and improvement of neonatal outcomes in selected groups of women with singleton pregnancy at high risk of preterm birth. Additionally it will determine whether any reduction in the incidence of preterm birth is accompanied by improved childhood outcome
Deforming the D1D5 CFT away from the orbifold point
The D1D5 brane bound state is believed to have an `orbifold point' in its
moduli space which is the analogue of the free Yang Mills theory for the D3
brane bound state. The supergravity geometry generated by D1 and D5 branes is
described by a different point in moduli space, and in moving towards this
point we have to deform the CFT by a marginal operator: the `twist' which links
together two copies of the CFT. In this paper we find the effect of this
deformation operator on the simplest physical state of the CFT -- the Ramond
vacuum. The twist deformation leads to a final state that is populated by pairs
of excitations like those in a squeezed state. We find the coefficients
characterizing the distribution of these particle pairs (for both bosons and
fermions) and thus write this final state in closed form.Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures, Late
Excitations in the deformed D1D5 CFT
We perform some simple computations for the first order deformation of the
D1D5 CFT off its orbifold point. It had been shown earlier that under this
deformation the vacuum state changes to a squeezed state (with the further
action of a supercharge). We now start with states containing one or two
initial quanta and write down the corresponding states obtained under the
action of deformation operator. The result is relevant to the evolution of an
initial excitation in the CFT dual to the near extremal D1D5 black hole: when a
left and a right moving excitation collide in the CFT, the deformation operator
spreads their energy over a larger number of quanta, thus evolving the state

Maxwell-Chern-Simons Vortices and Holographic Superconductors
We investigate probe limit vortex solutions of a charged scalar field in
Einstein-Maxwell theory in 3+1 dimensions, for an asymptotically AdS
Schwarzschild black hole metric with the addition of an axionic coupling to the
Maxwell field. We show that the inclusion of such a term, together with a
suitable potential for the axion field, can induce an effective Chern-Simons
term on the 2+1 dimensional boundary. We obtain numerical solutions of the
equations of motion and find Maxwell-Chern-Simons like magnetic vortex
configurations, where the magnetic field profile varies with the size of the
effective Chern-Simons coupling. The axion field has a non-trivial profile
inside the AdS bulk but does not condense at spatial infinity.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, version accepted for publication in JHE
A slice of AdS_5 as the large N limit of Seiberg duality
A slice of AdS_5 is used to provide a 5D gravitational description of 4D
strongly-coupled Seiberg dual gauge theories. An (electric) SU(N) gauge theory
in the conformal window at large N is described by the 5D bulk, while its
weakly coupled (magnetic) dual is confined to the IR brane. This framework can
be used to construct an N = 1 MSSM on the IR brane, reminiscent of the original
Randall-Sundrum model. In addition, we use our framework to study
strongly-coupled scenarios of supersymmetry breaking mediated by gauge forces.
This leads to a unified scenario that connects the extra-ordinary gauge

Emission from the D1D5 CFT: Higher Twists
We study a certain class of nonextremal D1D5 geometries and their ergoregion
emission. Using a detailed CFT computation and the formalism developed in
arXiv:0906.2015 [hep-th], we compute the full spectrum and rate of emission
from the geometries and find exact agreement with the gravity answer.
Previously, only part of the spectrum had been reproduced using a CFT
description. We close with a discussion of the context and significance of the

Low pH immobilizes and kills human leukocytes and prevents transmission of cell-associated HIV in a mouse model
BACKGROUND: Both cell-associated and cell-free HIV virions are present in semen and cervical secretions of HIV-infected individuals. Thus, topical microbicides may need to inactivate both cell-associated and cell-free HIV to prevent sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS. To determine if the mild acidity of the healthy vagina and acid buffering microbicides would prevent transmission by HIV-infected leukocytes, we measured the effect of pH on leukocyte motility, viability and intracellular pH and tested the ability of an acidic buffering microbicide (BufferGel(®)) to prevent the transmission of cell-associated HIV in a HuPBL-SCID mouse model. METHODS: Human lymphocyte, monocyte, and macrophage motilities were measured as a function of time and pH using various acidifying agents. Lymphocyte and macrophage motilities were measured using video microscopy. Monocyte motility was measured using video microscopy and chemotactic chambers. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) viability and intracellular pH were determined as a function of time and pH using fluorescent dyes. HuPBL-SCID mice were pretreated with BufferGel, saline, or a control gel and challenged with HIV-1-infected human PBMCs. RESULTS: Progressive motility was completely abolished in all cell types between pH 5.5 and 6.0. Concomitantly, at and below pH 5.5, the intracellular pH of PBMCs dropped precipitously to match the extracellular medium and did not recover. After acidification with hydrochloric acid to pH 4.5 for 60 min, although completely immotile, 58% of PBMCs excluded ethidium homodimer-1 (dead-cell dye). In contrast, when acidified to this pH with BufferGel, a microbicide designed to maintain vaginal acidity in the presence of semen, only 4% excluded dye at 10 min and none excluded dye after 30 min. BufferGel significantly reduced transmission of HIV-1 in HuPBL-SCID mice (1 of 12 infected) compared to saline (12 of 12 infected) and a control gel (5 of 7 infected). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that physiologic or microbicide-induced acid immobilization and killing of infected white blood cells may be effective in preventing sexual transmission of cell-associated HIV
