High-resolution UKIRT observations of circumnuclear star formation in M100
We present high-resolution, near-infrared imaging of the circumnuclear region
of the barred spiral galaxy M100 (=NGC 4321), accompanied by near-infrared
spectroscopy. We identify a total of 43 distinct regions in the K-band image,
and determine magnitudes and colours for 41 of them. By comparison with other
near-infrared maps we also derive colour excesses and K-band extinctions for
the knots. Combining the imaging and spectroscopic results, we conclude that
the knots are the result of bursts of star formation within the last 15-25 Myr.
We discuss the implications of these new results for our dynamical and

Linguistic analysis of the valence, arousal and dominance of auditory hallucinations and internal thoughts in schizophrenia: Implications for psychoeducation and CBT
70% of patients with schizophrenia suffer from auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) which are frequently described as distressing and disabling. The content of AVH, in relation to internal thought, has never been linguistically tested in a self-monitoring study. The aim of this preliminary study was to establish if there was a significant difference between AVH and inner thoughts on the key linguistic parameters of valence (pleasantness), dominance (control) and arousal (intensity of emotion produced). Six volunteers with a diagnosis of schizophrenia from voice hearing support groups produced real-time, detailed diaries of AVH and inner thoughts using randomised/fixed timers. Analysis of content was completed using an established linguistic database. AVH were significantly more unpleasant and controlling but not more emotionally arousing than inner thoughts. Psychoeducation around the experience of hallucination in schizophrenia should include information that the voices will be significantly more unpleasant and controlling than their own thoughts but not more emotionally arousing. CBT might therefore include the use of compassion focussed techniques to help with the unpleasantness of AVH and schema level techniques to improve coping with the dominance of AVH
Computer simulation of on-orbit manned maneuvering unit operations
Simulation of spacecraft on-orbit operations is discussed in reference to Martin Marietta's Space Operations Simulation laboratory's use of computer software models to drive a six-degree-of-freedom moving base carriage and two target gimbal systems. In particular, key simulation issues and related computer software models associated with providing real-time, man-in-the-loop simulations of the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) are addressed with special attention given to how effectively these models and motion systems simulate the MMU's actual on-orbit operations. The weightless effects of the space environment require the development of entirely new devices for locomotion. Since the access to space is very limited, it is necessary to design, build, and test these new devices within the physical constraints of earth using simulators. The simulation method that is discussed here is the technique of using computer software models to drive a Moving Base Carriage (MBC) that is capable of providing simultaneous six-degree-of-freedom motions. This method, utilized at Martin Marietta's Space Operations Simulation (SOS) laboratory, provides the ability to simulate the operation of manned spacecraft, provides the pilot with proper three-dimensional visual cues, and allows training of on-orbit operations. The purpose here is to discuss significant MMU simulation issues, the related models that were developed in response to these issues and how effectively these models simulate the MMU's actual on-orbiter operations
Radiological health risks to astronauts from space activities and medical procedures
Radiation protection standards for space activities differ substantially from those applied to terrestrial working situations. The levels of radiation and subsequent hazards to which space workers are exposed are quite unlike anything found on Earth. The new more highly refined system of risk management involves assessing the risk to each space worker from all sources of radiation (occupational and non-occupational) at the organ level. The risk coefficients were applied to previous space and medical exposures (diagnostic x ray and nuclear medicine procedures) in order to estimate the radiation-induced lifetime cancer incidence and mortality risk. At present, the risk from medical procedures when compared to space activities is 14 times higher for cancer incidence and 13 times higher for cancer mortality; however, this will change as the per capita dose during Space Station Freedom and interplanetary missions increases and more is known about the risks from exposure to high-LET radiation
Going Overboard? On Busy Directors and Firm Value
Abstract The literature disagrees on the link between so-called busy boards (where many independent directors hold multiple board seats) and firm performance. Some argue that busyness certifies a director’s ability and that such directors are value enhancing. Others argue that “over-boarded” directors are ineffective and detract from firm value. We find evidence that (1) the disparate results in prior work stem from differences in both sample composition and empirical design, (2) on balance the results suggest a negative association between board busyness and firm performance, and (3) the inclusion of firm fixed effects dramatically affects the conclusions drawn from, and the explanatory power of, multivariate analyses. We also explore alternative empirical definitions of what constitutes a busy director and find that commonly used proxies for busyness perform well relative to more complex alternatives. Reionization of Hydrogen and Helium by Early Stars and Quasars
We compute the reionization histories of hydrogen and helium due to the
ionizing radiation fields produced by stars and quasars. For the quasars we use
a model based on halo-merger rates that reproduces all known properties of the
quasar luminosity function at high redshifts. The less constrained properties
of the ionizing radiation produced by stars are modeled with two free
parameters: (i) a transition redshift, z_tran, above which the stellar
population is dominated by massive, zero-metallicity stars and below which it
is dominated by a Scalo mass function; (ii) the product of the escape fraction
of stellar ionizing photons from their host galaxies and the star-formation
efficiency, f_esc f_*. We constrain the allowed range of these free parameters
at high redshifts based on the lack of the HI Gunn-Peterson trough at z<6 and
the upper limit on the total intergalactic optical depth for electron
scattering, tau_es<0.18, from recent cosmic microwave background (CMB)
experiments. We find that quasars ionize helium by a redshift z~4, but cannot
reionize hydrogen by themselves before z~6. A major fraction of the allowed
combinations of f_esc f_* and z_tran lead to an early peak in the ionized
fraction due to metal-free stars at high redshifts. This sometimes results in
two reionization epochs, namely an early HII or HeIII overlap phase followed by
recombination and a second overlap phase. Even if early overlap is not
achieved, the peak in the visibility function for scattering of the CMB often
coincides with the early ionization phase rather than with the actual
reionization epoch. Consequently, tau_es does not correspond directly to the
reionization redshift. We generically find values of tau_es>7%, that should be
