    Theoretical models of planetary system formation: mass vs semi-major axis

    Planet formation models have been developed during the last years in order to try to reproduce the observations of both the solar system, and the extrasolar planets. Some of these models have partially succeeded, focussing however on massive planets, and for the sake of simplicity excluding planets belonging to planetary systems. However, more and more planets are now found in planetary systems. This tendency, which is a result of both radial velocity, transit and direct imaging surveys, seems to be even more pronounced for low mass planets. These new observations require the improvement of planet formation models, including new physics, and considering the formation of systems. In a recent series of papers, we have presented some improvements in the physics of our models, focussing in particular on the internal structure of forming planets, and on the computation of the excitation state of planetesimals, and their resulting accretion rate. In this paper, we focus on the concurrent effect of the formation of more than one planet in the same protoplanetary disc, and show the effect, in terms of global architecture and composition of this multiplicity. We use a N-body calculation including collision detection to compute the orbital evolution of a planetary system. Moreover, we describe the effect of competition for accretion of gas and solids, as well as the effect of gravitational interactions between planets. We show that the masses and semi-major axis of planets are modified by both the effect of competition and gravitational interactions. We also present the effect of the assumed number of forming planets in the same system (a free parameter of the model), as well as the effect of the inclination and eccentricity damping.Comment: accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Macroscopic effects in attosecond pulse generation

    We examine how the generation and propagation of high-order harmonics in a partly ionized gas medium affect their strength and synchronization. The temporal properties of the resulting attosecond pulses generated in long gas targets can be significantly influenced by macroscopic effects, in particular by the intensity in the medium and the degree of ionization. Under some conditions, the use of gas targets longer than the absorption length can lead to the generation of self-compressed attosecond pulses. We show this effect experimentally, using long argon-filled gas cells as generating medium.Comment: 5 pages 4 figure

    Phase Measurement of Resonant Two-Photon Ionization in Helium

    We study resonant two-color two-photon ionization of Helium via the 1s3p 1P1 state. The first color is the 15th harmonic of a tunable titanium sapphire laser, while the second color is the fundamental laser radiation. Our method uses phase-locked high-order harmonics to determine the {\it phase} of the two-photon process by interferometry. The measurement of the two-photon ionization phase variation as a function of detuning from the resonance and intensity of the dressing field allows us to determine the intensity dependence of the transition energy.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, under consideratio

    Breeding range and abundance of White–winged Scoters (Melanitta fusca deglandi) have declined in northwestern North America. Hypotheses proposed to account for this trend are that survival and/or recruitment of females had declined. Thus, we used a reverse–time capture–recapture approach to directly estimate survival, seniority and capture probabilities for females of breeding age at Redberry Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada for 1975–1980 and 2000–2003. We also estimated population size of breeding females for 1975–1985 and 2000–2003 using capture–recapture data. Initially, this local population was in serious decline [95% CL ( ) = 0.89 ± 0.09], but has since stabilized and may be slowly increasing [95% CL ( ) = 1.07 ± 0.11]. This reversal in trajectory apparently resulted from increased recruitment rather than increased apparent survival. Importantly, recent recruitment of adult females appeared to be driven solely by immigration of adult females with no detectable in situ recruitment, suggesting a hypothesis that the local population is being rescued by females produced elsewhere.El rango reproductivo y la abundancia del negrón especulado (Melanitta fusca deglandi) han disminuido en la zona noroeste de América del Norte. La hipótesis propuesta para explicar esta tendencia es que se ha producido una disminución en la supervivencia y/o el reclutamiento de hembras. Por consiguiente, utilizamos un enfoque de captura–recaptura con el tiempo invertido para estimar directamente la supervivencia, la jerarquía y las probabilidades de captura de las hembras en edad reproductora del lago Redberry, Saskatchewan, Canadá, durante los periodos 1975–1980 y 2000– 2003. También estimamos el tamaño poblacional de las hembras reproductoras durante los periodos 1975–1985 y 2000–2003, mediante el empleo de datos de captura–recaptura. En un principio, esta población local experimentó una importante disminución [95% CL ( ) = 0,89 ± 0,09], pero posteriormente se estabilizó, y es posible que poco a poco vaya aumentando [95% CL ( ) = 1,07 ± 0,11]. Por lo visto, la inversión de esta trayectoria se produjo como consecuencia de un mayor reclutamiento, en lugar de una mayor supervivencia aparente. Es importante destacar que el reclutamiento reciente de hembras adultas parece haber obedecido exclusivamente a la migración de hembras adultas sin un reclutamiento detectable in situ, lo que sugiere la hipótesis de que la población local está siendo rescatada por hembras procedentes de otros lugares

Steady and pulsed blowing has been used to control the secondary flow and separation characteristics of a highly loaded controlled diffusion airfoil. Investigations were performed at the design incidence for blowing ratios from approximately 0.7 to 3.0 (jet-to-inlet velocity) and a Reynolds number of 840 000 (based on axial chord and inlet velocity). Detailed flow field data were collected using a five-hole pressure probe, pressure taps on the blade surfaces, and time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry. Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations were performed for a wide range of flow control parameters. The experimental and numerical results are used to understand the interaction between the jet and the passage flow. The benefit of the flow control on the cascade performance is weighted against the costs of the actuation by introducing an efficiency which takes the presence of the jets into account.DFG, SFB 557, Beeinflussung komplexer turbulenter Scherströmunge

    Athletic Cardiac Adaptation in Males Is a Consequence of Elevated Myocyte Mass.

    Cardiac remodeling occurs in response to regular athletic training, and the degree of remodeling is associated with fitness. Understanding the myocardial structural changes in athlete's heart is important to develop tools that differentiate athletic from cardiomyopathic change. We hypothesized that athletic left ventricular hypertrophy is a consequence of increased myocardial cellular rather than extracellular mass as measured by cardiovascular magnetic resonance.Forty-five males (30 athletes and 15 sedentary age-matched healthy controls) underwent comprehensive cardiovascular magnetic resonance studies, including native and postcontrast T1 mapping for extracellular volume calculation. In addition, the 30 athletes performed a maximal exercise test to assess aerobic capacity and anaerobic threshold. Participants were grouped by athleticism: untrained, low performance, and high performance (O2max 60 mL/kg per min, respectively). In athletes, indexed cellular mass was greater in high- than low-performance athletes 60.7±7.5 versus 48.6±6.3 g/m(2); P<0.001), whereas extracellular mass was constant (16.3±2.2 versus 15.3±2.2 g/m(2); P=0.20). Indexed left ventricular end-diastolic volume and mass correlated with O2max (r=0.45, P=0.01; r=0.55, P=0.002) and differed significantly by group (P=0.01; P<0.001, respectively). Extracellular volume had an inverse correlation with O2max (r=-0.53, P=0.003 and left ventricular mass index (r=-0.44, P=0.02).Increasing left ventricular mass in athlete's heart occurs because of an expansion of the cellular compartment while the extracellular volume becomes relatively smaller: a difference which becomes more marked as left ventricular mass increases. Athletic remodeling, both on a macroscopic and cellular level, is associated with the degree of an individual's fitness. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance ECV quantification may have a future role in differentiating athlete's heart from change secondary to cardiomyopathy

    A Common Variant Associated with Dyslexia Reduces Expression of the KIAA0319 Gene

    Numerous genetic association studies have implicated the KIAA0319 gene on human chromosome 6p22 in dyslexia susceptibility. The causative variant(s) remains unknown but may modulate gene expression, given that (1) a dyslexia-associated haplotype has been implicated in the reduced expression of KIAA0319, and (2) the strongest association has been found for the region spanning exon 1 of KIAA0319. Here, we test the hypothesis that variant(s) responsible for reduced KIAA0319 expression resides on the risk haplotype close to the gene's transcription start site. We identified seven single-nucleotide polymorphisms on the risk haplotype immediately upstream of KIAA0319 and determined that three of these are strongly associated with multiple reading-related traits. Using luciferase-expressing constructs containing the KIAA0319 upstream region, we characterized the minimal promoter and additional putative transcriptional regulator regions. This revealed that the minor allele of rs9461045, which shows the strongest association with dyslexia in our sample (max p-value = 0.0001), confers reduced luciferase expression in both neuronal and non-neuronal cell lines. Additionally, we found that the presence of this rs9461045 dyslexia-associated allele creates a nuclear protein-binding site, likely for the transcriptional silencer OCT-1. Knocking down OCT-1 expression in the neuronal cell line SHSY5Y using an siRNA restores KIAA0319 expression from the risk haplotype to nearly that seen from the non-risk haplotype. Our study thus pinpoints a common variant as altering the function of a dyslexia candidate gene and provides an illustrative example of the strategic approach needed to dissect the molecular basis of complex genetic traits

    La presente investigación tuvo como eje los vínculos entre educación y trabajo en la vitivinicultura mendocina desde 1990 . El objetivo general fue comprender los procesos de incorporación de jóvenes de ambos sexos al mundo del trabajo y su vínculo con las estrategias de formación y los esquemas de percepción en el mercado vitivinícola mendocino desde los 90. Se analizaron e identificaron los tipos de trayectorias educativas, laborales y transiciones existentes en los jóvenes. También los condicionantes de género que operan desde la perspectiva de las mujeres jóvenes.     Single crystal flow reactor for studying reactivities on metal oxide model catalysts at atmospheric pressure to bridge the pressure gap to the adsorption properties determined under UHV conditions

    A flow reactor for the investigation of heterogeneous catalytic reactions on single crystalline metal oxide model catalysts has been designed. It is located in a high pressure cell attached to an UHV analysis chamber where the model catalysts can be prepared and characterized by surface science techniques. It can also be run in a batch modus. After sample transfer the high pressure cell can be completely separated from the UHV chamber and it can be used for oxidation treatments and reaction studies at gas pressures up to 1 bar. A new heating system provides direct heating of the sample by laser light up to 1200 K. Product analysis is done by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, which allows detection in the ppb range. The single crystal flow reactor provides new insight into the atomic scale surface chemistry of metal oxides under real catalysis conditions and bridges the pressure gap for model systems prepared and characterized under UHV conditions. Results on the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene over epitaxial potassium-iron oxide films are presented and correlated to thermal desorption measurements on the same films under UHV conditions
