Postpartum Regression of a Presumed Cavernous Meningioma.
Meningiomas are known to be more common in females than males. They are also known in rare cases to grow in size during pregnancy, which can complicate its management. We describe a 31-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with blurring of her vision and diplopia during the third trimester of her pregnancy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a small left cavernous sinus meningioma. The patient was treated conservatively until her uncomplicated delivery. A postpartum MRI scan showed complete regression of the suspected meningioma. Currently the patient is contemplating a further pregnancy
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by

A Comprehensive Investigation on Common Polymorphisms in the MDR1/ABCB1 Transporter Gene and Susceptibility to Colorectal Cancer
ATP Binding Cassette B1 (ABCB1) is a transporter with a broad substrate specificity involved in the elimination of several carcinogens from the gut. Several polymorphic variants within the ABCB1 gene have been reported as modulators of ABCB1-mediated transport. We investigated the impact of ABCB1 genetic variants on colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. A hybrid tagging/functional approach was performed to select 28 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were genotyped in 1,321 Czech subjects, 699 CRC cases and 622 controls. In addition, six potentially functional SNPs were genotyped in 3,662 German subjects, 1,809 cases and 1,853 controls from the DACHS study. We found that three functional SNPs (rs1202168, rs1045642 and rs868755) were associated with CRC risk in the German population. Carriers of the rs1202168_T and rs868755_T alleles had an increased risk for CRC (Ptrend = 0.016 and 0.029, respectively), while individuals bearing the rs1045642_C allele showed a decreased risk of CRC (Ptrend = 0.022). We sought to replicate the most significant results in an independent case-control study of 3,803 subjects, 2,169 cases and 1,634 controls carried out in the North of Germany. None of the SNPs tested were significantly associated with CRC risk in the replication study. In conclusion, in this study of about 8,800 individuals we show that ABCB1 gene polymorphisms play at best a minor role in the susceptibility to CRC

NOS3 regulates angiogenic potential of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived endothelial cells
Incorporation of blood capillaries in engineered tissues and their functional connection to host blood vessels is essential for success in engineering vascularized tissues, a process which involves spatial patterning of endothelial cells (ECs) to form functional and integrated vascular networks. Different types of ECs have been employed for vascular network formation and each source offers advantages and disadvantages. While ECs derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC-ECs) offer advantages over primary ECs in that they can be generated in large quantities for autologous applications, their suitability for disease modelling and cell replacement therapies is not well-explored. The present study compares the angiogenic capacity of iPSC-ECs and primary ECs (cardiac microvascular ECs and lymphatic microvascular ECs) using an in vitro tubulogenesis assay, revealing comparable performance in forming a pseudo-capillary network on Matrigel. Analysis of genes encoding angiogenic factors (VEGFA, VEGFC, VEGFD and ANG), endothelial cell markers (PECAM1, PCDH12 and NOS3) and proliferation markers (AURKB and MKI67) indicates a significant positive correlation between NOS3 mRNA expression levels and various tubulogenic parameters. Further experimentation using a CRISPR activation system demonstrates a positive impact of NOS3 on tubulogenic activity of ECs, suggesting that iPSC-ECs can be enhanced with endogenous NOS3 activation. Collectively, these findings highlight the potential of iPSC-ECs in generating vascularized tissues and advancing therapeutic vascularization
