Response to Gracia Fay Ellwood's "Religious experience, religious worldviews, and near-death studies".
The Gnostic World of Anorexia Nervoso
The pastoral and theological literature has been notably quiet about the now-epidemic disorder of anorexia nervosa. In pursuit of a theological and pastoral understanding of this affliction, it is proposed here that beliefs and practices of anorexics share a common rejection of incarnated presence with advocates of the ancient Christological heresy of gnosticism. Examined are three parallel theological errors expressed in claims of specialness, all-or-nothing reasoning and asceticism. </jats:p

Abstract: Keith Augustine raises questions regarding Pam Reynolds's near-death experience (NDE) while undergoing cerebral aneurysm surgery using the hypothermic cardiac arrest ("standstill") procedure. I specifically address questions regarding anesthesia and brainstem auditory evoked response procedures; and the relation of Reynolds's NDE to "standstill" and life after death
Heresy and Pastoral Counseling
Relates four of the classical Christian heresies—ebionism, adoptionism, docetism, and gnosticism—to the practice of pastoral counseling. Each of these heresies distorted the attempts to relate the divine and human nature of Christ. Variations of these heresies can be seen similarly distorting the practice of pastoral counseling. Reacquaintance with these traditional theological problems can help avoid parallel problems in the modern practice of Christian ministry. </jats:p

Abstract: John Gibbs relates research findings on near-death experiences (NDEs) to John Shelby Spong's "continuity view of Jesus" and his "call for a new Christianity." Gibbs' argument falls short of demonstrating congruence of the scientific findings of NDE research with the theological claims of Spong, who posits that Jesus was not God, but just a person
