Asymptotic solutions of forced nonlinear second order differential equations and their extensions

Using a modified version of Schauder's fixed point theorem, measures of non-compactness and classical techniques, we provide new general results on the asymptotic behavior and the non-oscillation of second order scalar nonlinear differential equations on a half-axis. In addition, we extend the methods and present new similar results for integral equations and Volterra-Stieltjes integral equations, a framework whose benefits include the unification of second order difference and differential equations. In so doing, we enlarge the class of nonlinearities and in some cases remove the distinction between superlinear, sublinear, and linear differential equations that is normally found in the literature. An update of papers, past and present, in the theory of Volterra-Stieltjes integral equations is also presented

Ethical conflicts in the authorship of scientific papers

    Get PDF
Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus; Scielo. The frequency of conflicts about authorship of publications has increased along with the increase in the number of people involved in scientific work. Some of the factors that strongly influence the generation of conflicts and malpractices in authorship definition of scientific publications are the pressure of academia, economic incentives from the pharmaceutical industry in the field of biomedicine and authors' wishes and expectations of recognition, among other factors. The article analyzes this problem, increasingly common in the field of medicine and related areas. Special attention is devoted to the prevailing laws in our country and international guidelines related to intellectual property and authorship of scientific publications, respectively. However, the ethical commitment, intellectual honesty and truthfulness of each of the authors about what is reported seems to be the decisive factor for the solution to these authorship conflicts.http://ref.scielo.org/jg2qv

A healthy lifestyle attenuates the effect of polypharmacy on total and cardiovascular mortality: a national prospective cohort study

This work examines whether the increased all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality associated with polypharmacy could be offset by a healthy lifestyle. We included a prospective cohort of 3,925 individuals representative of the Spanish population aged ≥60 years, who were recruited in 2000–2001 and followed up through 2014. Polypharmacy was defined as treatment with ≥5 medications. The following lifestyle behaviors were considered healthy: not smoking, eating a healthy diet, being physically active, moderate alcohol consumption, low sitting time, and adequate sleep duration. Individuals were classified into three lifestyle categories s: unfavorable (0–2), intermediate (3–4) favorable (5–6). Over a median 13.8-y follow-up, 1,822 all-cause and 675 CVD deaths occurred. Among individuals with polypharmacy, intermediate and favorable lifestyles were associated with an all-cause mortality reduction (95% confidence interval [CI]) of 47% (34–58%) and 54% (37–66%), respectively; 37% (9–56%) and 60% (33–76%) for CVD death, respectively. The theoretical adjusted hazard ratio (95%CI) associated with replacing 1 medication with 1 healthy lifestyle behavior was 0.73 (0.66–0.81) for all-cause death and 0.69 (0.59–0.82) for CVD death. The theoretical adjusted hazard ratio (95%CI) for all-cause and CVD mortality associated with simply reducing 1 medication was 0.88 (0.83–0.94) and 0.83 (0.76–0.91), respectively. Hence, adherence to a healthy lifestyle behavior can reduce mortality risk associated with polypharmacy in older adults. This work was supported by FIS grants 16/609 and 13/0288 (Instituto de Salud Carlos III, State Secretary of R + D + I and FEDER/FSE), MINECO R + D + I grant (DEP2013-47786-R), the FRAILOMIC Initiative (European Union FP7-HEALTH-2012-Proposal No. 305483-2), and the ATHLOS project (European project H2020- Project ID:635316

Generaciones, estilos y cambio emocional. El caso del Estallido Social chileno, 2019

This article seeks to analyse and understand the emotional dimension of the banners, graffiti and slogans deployed in Chile during the Social Outbreak of 2019. In order to do so, I base my study on the debates and categories of the history of emotions, particularly the concept of “emotional style” coined by Peter Stearns and Carol Stearns. The main argument of this work is that the Social Outburst exposed the existence of a different emotional style from the existing one, as a distinctive element between generations. It is possible to perceive this emotional style in at least five elements that form part of its elemental features, which played a crucial role in how politics was conducted during the event.

Ctl+Heal: a scoping review on therapeutic alliance and technology

    Get PDF
A strong therapeutic alliance between a healthcare provider and patient is built upon a strong bond, trust, and open communication, all essential for successful healthcare outcomes. Establishing a robust therapeutic alliance relies significantly on non-verbal behaviors, including tone, facial expression, and eye contact. Traditionally, expert feedback was essential for addressing undesirable non-verbal behaviors and cultivating desirable ones; however, technological advancements have introduced the concept of technology-assisted feedback. This would eliminate the immediate need for experts, thus allowing the clinician more time to focus on their clinical skills; however, these methods are scattered across various fields of medical education, technology and engineering, and social sciences. The purpose of this scoping review is to identify and summarize technology-assisted methods used to assess non-verbal behaviors of current and prospective healthcare providers in clinical, research, and educational settings that enhance the quality of the therapeutic alliance between provider and patient
