Antioxidants and Regulation of Antioxidant Enzymes by Cellular Redox Status

    Get PDF
It has been well known that free radicals have numerous detrimental effects in both in vitro and in vivo in biological systems because of their unavoidable and tremendous reactivity against biological macromolecules especially proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids. They are produced in the biological systems continuously by various mechanisms and eliminated by cellular antioxidant systems. If not eliminated sufficiently, or there is a disturbance in their neutralization, inevitable cellular damage may occur. Activities or the presence of antioxidant enzymes in the cells are under strong regulation with transcriptional, translational and post translational mechanisms as a consequence of changes in cellular redox potential. Redox sensitive metabolic enzymes or proteins; such as protein phosphatases, NF-?B and AP-1, are capable of sensing the oxidant signals by reversible oxidation of their regulatory units which cause them to transduce the signal and adjust the cellular antioxidant metabolism. Redox sensitive proteins execute their functions via kinases, phosphatases, and transcription factors influencing the steady state levels of antioxidant enzymes. Therefore, cells may sense, transduce, and translate the oxidant signals into appropriate cellular responses depending on the cellular redox state. This rewiev focused on the basic definitions for the free radicals and the tissue defense mechanism and the possible regulation mechanisms of antioxidant enzymes in the situations undergoing reversible changes in cellular redox status

The Impact of Employment Web Sites' Traffic on Unemployment: A Cross Country Comparison

Although employment web sites have recently become the main source for re- cruitment and selection process, the relation between those sites and unemploy- ment rates is seldom addressed. Deriving data from 32 countries and 427 web sites, this study explores the correlation between unemployment rates of European countries and the attractiveness of country specific employment web sites. It also compares the changes in unemployment rates and traffic on all the aforementioned web sites. The results showed that there is a strong correlation between web sites traffic and unemployment rates.Comment: 9 page

Analysis of hospital service areas in Istanbul

    Get PDF
After 1950's, the rapid expansion of Istanbul has created tremendous demand for new public facilities as well as the need for evaluation of existing facilities. Although the service areas of hospital is a very important information in order to use efficently scarce resources, there are very few studies on this subject in devoloping countries. This study investigates the spatial behavior of in patients in relation to three different types of hospitals ( teaching, general public and private) in order to provide background for the efficient planning of health facilities in Istanbul. According to the results, all three types of hospitals receive patients from different parts of the city as well as throughout the country. The service areas of these hospitals are investigated also according to their location within the different zones of the city. As the speciality of the hospitals increases, the density of the patients becomes more widely distributed than the local hospitals. According to the results, the areas which are not served by any hospital are determined. Further, research is suggested on more detailed analysis of spatial behavior of patients with respect to patients' characteristics.

Target duality in N=8 superconformal mechanics and the coupling of dual pairs

    Get PDF
We couple dual pairs of N=8 superconformal mechanics with conical targets of dimension d and 8-d. The superconformal coupling generates an oscillator-type potential on each of the two target factors, with a frequency depending on the respective dual coordinates. In the case of the inhomogeneous (3,8,5) model, which entails a monopole background, it is necessary to add an extra supermultiplet of constants for half of the supersymmetry. The N=4 analog, joining an inhomogeneous (1,4,3) with a (3,4,1) multiplet, is also analyzed in detail.Comment: 1+18 page

Information and Communication Technology Reputation for XU030 Quote Companies

By the increasing spread of information technology and Internet improvements, most of the large-scale companies are paying special attention to their reputation on many types of the information and communication technology. The increasing developments and penetration of new technologies into daily life, brings out paradigm shift on the perception of reputation and creates new concepts like esocieties, techno-culture and new media. Contemporary companies are trying to control their reputation over the new communities who are mostly interacting with social networks, web pages and electronic communication technologies. In this study, the reputation of top 30 Turkish companies, quoted to the Istanbul Stock Market, is studied, based on the information technology interfaces between company and society, such as social networks, blogs, wikis and web pages. The web reputation is gathered through 17 different parameters, collected from Google, Facebook, Twitter, Bing, Alexa, etc. The reputation index is calculated by z-index and fscoring formulations after the min-max normalization of each web reputation parameter.Comment: 5 pages 2 figure 1 table 21 refs. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1401.754
