AIM: There are many trials concerning peripheral nerve damage causes and treatment options. Unfortunately, nerve damage is still a major problem regarding health, social and economic issues. On this study, we used vascular graft and human cord blood derived stem cells to find an alternative treatment solution to this problem. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used 21 female Wistar rats on our study. They were anesthetized with ketamine and we studied right hind limbs. On Group 1, we did a full layer cut on the right sciatic nerve. On Group 2, we did a full layer cut on the right sciatic nerve, and we covered synthetic vascular graft on cut area. On Group 3, we did a full layer cut on right sciatic nerve, and we covered the area with stem cell applied vascular graft. RESULTS: At the end of postoperative 8. weeks, we performed EMG on the rats. When we compared healthy and degenerated areas as a result of EMG, we found significant amplitude differences between the groups on healthy areas whereas there was no significant difference on degenerated areas between the groups. Then we re-opened the operated area again to reveal the sciatic nerve cut area, and we performed electron microscope evaluation. On the stem cell group, we observed that both the axon and the myelin sheet prevented degeneration. CONCLUSION: This study is a first on using synthetic vascular graft and cord blood derived CD34+ cells in peripheral nerve degeneration. On the tissues that were examined with electron microscope, we observed that CD34+ cells prevented both axonal and myelin sheath degeneration. Nerve tissue showed similar results to the control group, and the damage was minimal. © 2018 Ali Yilmaz, Abdullah Topcu, Cagdas Erdogan, Levent Sinan Bir, Barbaros Sahin, Gulcin Abban, Erdal Coskun, Ayca Ozkul

Investigation of the Effect of Harmonics Caused by Transformer-Induced Nonlinear Loads on Electrical Energy

In this study, distribution transformers in the Mu¸s Alparslan University campus are analyzed in order to minimize energy losses due to harmonics in the electrical network. Current and voltage harmonics, which are the power quality problems of these transformers, are analyzed. The power quality of different transformers in Mu¸s Alparslan University was measured with a Chauvin Arnoux CA:8331 energy analyzer. Three-phase nonlinear load models were created using current harmonic values in the Matlab/Simulink environment. A parallel active power filter is designed in the Matlab/Simulink environment to eliminate current harmonics. The performance of the parallel active power filter is analyzed for each transformer. As a result, the total harmonic distortion (THDI) ratio for the current decreased from 6.78% to 1.38% in fast Fourier transform analyses after the parallel active power filter was activated in the first transformer. Similarly, the THDI ratio decreased from 5.1% to 2.19% in the second transformer, from 4.5% to 1.39% in the third transformer, and from 5.63% to 1.36% in the fourth transformer.OPEN ACCESS Received: 20/02/2025 Accepted: 15/04/2025 Published: 30/05/202

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of high intensity interval training (HIIT) vs moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on VO2max and anaerobic power in trained young cyclists in short period. Methods: Eighteen cyclists (between 15 and 20 years, n= 7 women, n= 11 men) were included in this study (age:17.50 years, height: 173.22 cm, body mass: 63.38 kg and body-mass index: 20.95 kg/m2). The cyclists were randomly divided into two groups. The training group (GHIIT, n= 9) participated in high intensity interval training two times per week for 6 weeks, while the Control Group (GCON, n= 9) completed moderate intensity continuous training (MICT). The training’ HR was conducted at 80%-95% HRmax for the first four weeks. In the last two weeks, the training’ HR was increased to %100 HRmax. The height, body mass, body fat %, aerobic and anaerobic power were measured. The maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) was measured using a portable metabolic analyzer and, the traditional VO2max test followed a standard incremental design. Anaerobic capacity was evaluated by Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT) in 30sec. Results: There was no significant difference in body fat %, body mass, BMI, powerpeak, powermean, and powermin between GHIIT and GCON at the end of the training program (p>0.05). However, there was a significant difference in VO2max (p= 0.001) between GHIIT and GCON at the end of training (p<0.05). Conclusion: The high intensity interval training occurred a significant increase in VO2max. Anaerobic power improved but this result was not significant. Nevertheless, HIIT may use to improve in VO2max in young trained cyclists in short period. © JPES

Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation from Coupled Asymmetric Plasmonic Metal Nanostructures

We show that second harmonic generation can be enhanced by Fano resonant coupling of asymmetric plasmonic metal nanostructures. We develop a theoretical model examining the effects of electromagnetic interaction between two metal nanostructures on the second harmonic generation. We compare the second harmonic generation efficiency of a single plasmonic metal nanostructure with that of two coupled ones. We show that second harmonic generation from a single metal nanostructure can be enhanced about 30 times by attaching a second metal nanostructure with a 10 times higher quality factor than that of the first one. The origin of this enhancement is Fano resonant coupling of the two metal nanostructures. We support our findings on Fano enhancement of second harmonic generation by an experimental study of a coupled plasmonic system composed of a silver nanoparticle and a silver nanowire on glass surface in which the ratio of the quality factors are also estimated to be around 10 times

We wanted to discuss our experiences in the approach to borderline ovarian tumors, which constitute a group different from epithelial ovarian tumors with respect to their biological structure in line with retrospective information gathered from our cases. A total of 25 patients operated on for the indication of adnexal masses diagnosed as borderline ovarian tumors based on frozen section results were included in our study. Patient age, tumor diameter, tumor markers and surgeries performed were discussed in the light of the literature. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software. The patient mean age was 43.84±11.34 years. The mass was localized in the right (n=13), left (n=11) or both (n=1) adnexal regions. The mean tumor diameter was 12.9±5.84 cm. Histopathologic examination established the diagnosis of serous borderline (n=14 patients) and mucinous borderline (n=11) ovarian tumors. Although the results of our study are consistent with current literature data, a greater number of current studies should be performed on borderline ovarian tumors, which are defined as a class of tumors different from epithelial ovarian tumors.Želja nam je opisati naša iskustva u pristupu graničnim tumorima jajnika kao skupini tumora koji se razlikuju od epitelnih tumora jajnika prema biološkoj strukturi, sukladno retrospektivnim podacima prikupljenim iz naših slučajeva.

ΔΕΝ ΥΠΑΡΧΕΙ ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗTuberculosis is an infectious bacterial disease of Bovidae and the causative agent is Mycobacterium bovis. It is responsible for remarkable economic losses among cattle herds with widely dispersion. Prompt and consistent diagnosis of tuberculosis especially in countries where the disease is endemic as in Turkey is of great importance to detect and identify infectious cases for strengthening control measures. In the present study, it was aimed to detect true animal and herd prevalence (within-herd, and between-herd) of antibodies against M. bovis in cattle herds. A serologic survey for antibody detection against the M. bovis was conducted by using an ELISA kit. Thirty three cattle herds were randomly selected from different farms and totally 460 cattle over five years of age were sampled. The true animal, within-herd, and between-herd prevalences found were 5.9% (95% CI = 3.0 to 8.8), 11.1% (95 CI = 6.5 to 15.8) and 73.4% (95 CI = 51.2 to 95.6), respectively. Results will provide useful information about the status of M. bovis infection and will contribute to the disease control practices

Although the color Doppler ultrasonography diagnosis of intestinal malrotation with midgut volvulus, based on the typical "whirlpool" appearance of the mesenteric vascular structures is well-defined in the peer-reviewed literature, the combination of both the angiographic illustration of these findings and the contemporary state-of-the-art imaging techniques is lacking. We report the digital subtraction angiography and multidetector computed tomography angiography findings of a 37-year-old male with intestinal malrotation
