    Fluid Venting Activity on the Costa Rica Margin: New Results from Authigenic Carbonates

    Carbonate precipitates on mounds and along tectonic scarps off the Costa Rica margin are manifestations of subduction-induced dewatering. The long-term dewatering history is recorded in mineralogical, petrological and isotope signals of carbonates recovered from these sites. The carbonates are strongly depleted in δ13C (−11 to −53‰ PDB) and enriched in δ18O (+4 to +8‰ PDB). Thermogenic methane and biogenic methane were identified as sources of the carbon. Chemoherm carbonates and seepage-associated carbonates formed in a focused flow regime have lighter δ13C values, while others formed in a more diffusive flow regime have slightly enriched C isotope values. Three fluid components were inferred based on the calculation of equilibrium δ18O: clay dehydration water, gas hydrate water and seawater. Calculated equilibrium δ18O values of carbonates from different down-core depths as well as from different precipitation stages show that the δ18O of the precipitating fluid is progressively depleted with time. Dolostones showing a methane-C source and a well constrained O-isotope signature are thought to have formed at depth in the sediment and subsequently became exhumed. Glauconitic sandstones cemented by methane-derived carbonate provide evidence that fluid and solid material have been expelled by the mud volcano

    A fix-and-optimize approach for the multi-level capacitated lot sizing problem

    This paper presents an optimization-based solution approach for the dynamic multi-level capacitated lot sizing problem (MLCLSP) with positive lead times. The key idea is to solve a series of mixed-integer programs in an iterative fix-and-optimize algorithm. Each of these programs is optimized over all real-valued variables, but only a small subset of binary setup variables. The remaining binary setup variables are tentatively fixed to values determined in previous iterations. The resulting algorithm is transparent, flexible, accurate and relatively fast. Its solution quality outperforms those of the approaches by Tempelmeier/Derstroff and by Stadtler

    Dynamic capacitated lot sizing with random demand and dynamic safety stocks

    We present a stochastic version of the single-level, multi-product dynamic lotsizing problem subject to a capacity constraint. A production schedule has to be determined for random demand so that expected costs are minimized and a constraint based on a new backlog-oriented -service-level measure is met. This leads to a non-linear model that is approximated by two different linear models. In the first approximation, a scenario approach based on random samples is used. In the second approximation model, the expected values of physical inventory and backlog as functions of the cumulated production are approximated by piecewise linear functions. Both models can be solved to determine efficient, robust and stable production schedules in the presence of uncertain and dynamic demand. They lead to dynamic safety stocks that are endogenously coordinated with the production quantities. A numerical analysis based on a set of (artificial) problem instances is used to evaluate the relative performance of the two different approximation approaches. We furthermore show under which conditions precise demand forecasts are particularly useful from a production-scheduling perspective

    A novel vacuum ultra violet lamp for metastable rare gas experiments

    We report on a new design of a vacuum ultra violet (VUV) lamp for direct optical excitation of high laying atomic states e.g. for excitation of metastable rare gas atoms. The lamp can be directly mounted to ultra high vacuum vessels (p <= 10^(-10) mbar). It is driven by a 2.45 GHz microwave source. For optimum operation it requires powers of approximately 20 W. The VUV light is transmitted through a magnesium fluoride window, which is known to have a decreasing transmittance for VUV photons with time. In our special setup, after a run-time of the VUV lamp of 550 h the detected signal continuously decreased to 25 % of its initial value. This corresponds to a lifetime increase of two orders of magnitude compared to previous setups or commercial lamps

    The Europeanisation of national political systems : Parliaments and executives

    This article reviews the by now extensive literature on the Europeanisation of the political systems of the EU-15, with an emphasis on parliaments and executives (i.e., governments and ministerial administrations). The Living Review highlights apparently contradictory effects of integration: de-parlamentarisation vs. re-parlamentarisation; bureaucratisation vs. politicisation; and centralisation vs. diffusion. These diverging assessments of the effects of integration do, in part, reflect diversity in the EU-15; in part, they are, however, also a result of differences in the specification of variables, research designs and theoretical approaches. Work that inquires into patterns of Europeanisation – across institutional domains, countries, regions and time – and which seeks to tackle the ‘methodological nationalism’ of the Europeanisation literature promises a clearer picture of the institutional consequences of European integration than we possess at present

    Solving a multi-level capacitated lot sizing problem with multi-period setup carry-over via a fix-and-optimize heuristic

    This paper presents a new algorithm for the dynamic Multi-Level Capacitated Lot Sizing Problem with Setup Carry-Overs (MLCLSP-L). The MLCLSP-L is a big-bucket model that allows the production of any number of products within a period, but it incorporates partial sequencing of the production orders in the sense that the first and the last product produced in a period are determined by the model. We solve a model which is applicable to general bill-of-material structures and which includes minimum lead times of one period and multi-period setup carry-overs. Our algorithm solves a series of mixed-integer linear programs in an iterative so-called Fix-and-Optimize approach. In each instance of these mixed-integer linear programs a large number of binary setup variables is fixed whereas only a small subset of these variables is optimized, together with the complete set of the inventory and lot size variables. A numerical study shows that the algorithm provides high-quality results and that the computational effort is moderate

    Equilibrium Low Temperature Heat Capacity of the Spin Density Wave compound (TMTTF)2 Br: effect of a Magnetic Field

    We have investigated the effect of the magnetic field (B) on the very low-temperature equilibrium heat capacity ceq of the quasi-1 D organic compound (TMTTF)2Br, characterized by a commensurate Spin Density Wave (SDW) ground state. Below 1K, ceq is dominated by a Schottky-like contribution, very sensitive to the experimental time scale, a property that we have previously measured in numerous DW compounds. Under applied field (in the range 0.2- 7 T), the equilibrium dynamics, and hence ceq extracted from the time constant, increases enormously. For B = 2-3 T, ceq varies like B2, in agreement with a magnetic Zeeman coupling. Another specific property, common to other Charge/Spin density wave (DW) compounds, is the occurrence of metastable branches in ceq, induced at very low temperature by the field exceeding a critical value. These effects are discussed within a generalization to SDWs in a magnetic field of the available Larkin-Ovchinnikov local model of strong pinning. A limitation of the model when compared to experiments is pointed out.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure

    Presence of two phylogenetically distinct groups in the deep sea mussel Acharax (Mollusca, Bivalvia, Solemyidae)

    The family Solemyidae represents ancestral protobranch bivalves with the shallow-water genus Solemya and the deep-sea genus Acharax. All known members of this family host symbiotic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in their gill filaments. Analysis of 18S rRNA gene sequences of Acharax specimens from methane-seeps off Makran (Pakistan), Java (Indonesia), the Aleutian Trench and off the Oregon, Costa Rica, and Peru margins revealed that Solemya spp. and Acharax spp. are well-separated genetically. This supports the current systematic distinction based on morphological criteria. We found 2 clearly distinct clusters within the genus Acharax, with specimens from the Makran, Oregon and Peru (MOP) margins in one (MOP–Acharax) cluster, and those from Java, the Aleutian Trench and Costa Rica (JAC) in the other (JAC–Acharax) cluster. The separation of MOP– and JAC–Acharax clusters from each other and from Solemya (S. reidi and S. velum) is well-supported by phylogenetic calculations employing maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony. Compared to genetic distances among other protobranch groups, distances between the MOP– and JAC–Acharax clusters would justify the affiliation of these clusters to separate species. This implies that species differentiation in Acharax based on shell morphology is likely to underestimate true species diversity within this taxon. Furthermore, our results support the hypothesis that genetic separation of Solemya and Acharax is congruent with the phylogeny of their bacterial endosymbionts

    Solidifying system of democracy in the Central and Eastern European new EU members

    The paper examines the requirements of an effective and legitimized democratic political system in the process of transition. The analysis and the conclusions are based on the Hungarian experience, which can carefully be applied to all Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. Special focus is given to the relationship of legal certainty and the efficiency of the democratic system, to the tension between legalism and managerialism and to the characteristics of civil society organizations. In the conclusion special features of the transitional countries are pointed out
