Authentic writing in the (foreign language) classroom – contradictory or doable?
Writing practice does not have to be useless and boring. It can even serve wider educational goals, sensitizing students to social and political problems. This paper shows how Amnesty International Urgent Action Letters can be used to make classroom writing practice focused and meaningful. At the same time, writing tasks designed around Urgent Actions can provide students with valuable examination practice. Such tasks can show students that writing tasks, as well as writing itself, can be useful in modern world
The dynamic model of writing and its implications for the FL classroom
The dynamic model of writing proposed by Matsuda (1997) is intended to visualize the complexity of interrelationships between the writer, text, and reader in second language writing instruction. Contrary to the static model, the dynamic model assumes an active role of the writer and acknowledges the writer‘s contribution not only to the text, but also to communication with the writer, and—as a consequence—accounts for intercultural interaction and negotiation of meaning. Because in the context of foreign language writing Matsuda‘s dynamic model is usually unrealistic, this paper proposes a model of foreign language writing which combines features of both the static and dynamic models to illustrate the unique complexity of foreign language writing

Portable automated radio-frequency scanner for non-destructive testing of carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer composites
A portable automated scanner for non-destructive testing of carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites has been developed. Measurement head has been equipped with an array of newly developed radio-frequency (RF) inductive sensors mounted on a flexible arm, which allows the measurement of curved CFRP samples. The scanner is also equipped with vacuum sucks providing mechanical stability. RF sensors operate in a frequency range spanning from 10 up to 300 MHz, where the largest sensitivity to defects buried below the front CFRP surface is expected. Unlike to ultrasonic testing, which will be used for reference, the proposed technique does not require additional couplants. Moreover, negligible cost and high repeatability of inductive sensors allows developing large scanning arrays, thus, substantially speeding up the measurements of large surfaces. The objective will be to present the results of an extensive measurement campaign undertaken for both planar and curved large CFRP samples, pointing out major achievements and potential challenges that still have to be addressed
Rule-Based Accounting: The Unintended Consequences of Warrant Liabilities
The surge of special-purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) provided an attainable way for startups to raise capital, however, it also exposed the unintended consequences of rule-based accounting in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Upon initial public offering (IPO), along with common shares, SPACs issue warrants that permit and encourage investors to acquire additional shares at a fixed, intendedly lower price, independent of market valuation. The warrant's book value is therefore not equal to market value of the share, which fails the equity test under ASC 815 pronouncement, thus forcing an entity to classify such warrants as liabilities. The warrants' fair value dramatically counters the SPAC's equity accounts, including revenue, leading to diminished earnings per share (EPS), and yielding reduced GAAP-compliant profit, which may mislead prosperous and existing shareholders as well as existing warrant holders who shun from investing upon detecting the grandiose liability. A case study of a SPAC-born entity, Butterfly, Inc., offers invaluable insight on how warrant liabilities corrupt operating income and discourage share acquisition. To circumvent improper diagnosis, retail investors may choose to compute additional ratios and set benchmarks such as pro forma operating income and EPS to determine a SPAC's investment merit
Exploring European Writing Cultures : Country Reports on Genres, Writing Practices and Languages Used in European Higher Education
At European universities, writing is a traditional way of learning, assessment, and independent study, but it is handled in an implicit, tradition-based way that has only recently been contrasted with and supported by a more explicit writing ped-agogy. Still, little systematic knowledge is available about the pedagogical ap-proaches to writing, writing practices, and genres across Europe and much of it is codified in the national languages without correlation to internationally accept-ed terminology and theories. This book explores the writing cultures of Europe, nation by nation, and reports the idiosyncrasies for each respective country. The reports are based on a 17-item topic list used by the authors to collect data be-fore synthesizing the results. Next to writing practices and genres, a high level of emphasis was placed on the structure of educational systems, the languages in use, and the kind of support provided for student writers.

Wenig auf systematische Weise erhobenes vergleichendes Wissen gibt es bislang über Schreibpraktiken, Genres und schreibdidaktische Ansätze in Europa und das, was an Wissen existiert ist oft in den nationalen Sprachen verfasst, die nicht mit internationalen Terminologien und Theorien der Schreibwissenschaft verbunden sind. Der vorliegende Band untersucht Schreibkulturen in Europa Land für Land und berichtet was jeweils hervorsticht. Die Berichte basieren auf einer 17-Item Themenliste, nach der die Autorenteams Daten über ihr jeweiliges Land sammelten, bevor sie es zu einem Bericht synthetisierten. Neben Schreibpraktiken und Genres werden dabei die Struktur des jeweiligen Bildungssystems, die verwendeten Sprachen und die besondere Schreibdidaktik hervorgehoben.

Identification of potential source and sink areas for butterflies on the Iberian Peninsula

The dynamic analysis of geographical distribution is relevant to identify the processes that underlie any changes of geographical ranges. This is an essential element of both biogeography and conservation biology. Fuzzy logic, in particular the fuzzy concept of favourability for species occurrence,
helps to perform a dynamic interpretation of the internal complexity of species ranges.
2. We modelled the distributions of the 222 Iberian butterflies using favourability functions and 92 environmental variables (spatial, climatic, topographic, geological and indicators of human activity). We obtained a significant environmental favourability model for each butterfly.
3. We identified the potential sources and sinks in the distribution area of each butterfly species using their respective favourability and presence–absence maps, considering as sources only those areas with high favourability where the butterfly is present, and sinks only those areas with low favourability where the butterfly is present too.
4. The source areas for the Iberian butterflies are concentrated in the north of the peninsula, mainly in the mountain ranges (Cantabrian Range, Pyrenees and Central Range). Sink areas are more dispersed all around the peninsula. We found a concentration of sink locations in eastern Iberia (Alicante and Murcia provinces) and in the southwestern area (Doñana National Park).
5. This may be helpful when implementing conservation measures, by providing a biogeographical dynamic interpretation of the roles of different parts of the distribution range of the species. Work-related rhinitis – Is it always an occupational disease?
Rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the upper respiratory tract, characterized by a high prevalence and a complex pathogenesis. Work-related rhinitis (WRR) can be divided into occupational rhinitis (OR) and work-exacerbated rhinitis (WER). It is not only considered as a disease entity but also in the context of medical certification as the allergic disease associated with occupational exposure. Epidemiology of work-related rhinitis has been found to vary depending on the occupation and specific exposure, on the other hand the prevalence data may be underestimated due to the lack of uniform diagnostic criteria. This paper reviews the issues comprising the pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of patients with work-related rhinitis. It also discusses the significance of the disease in occupational medicine, particularly in terms of preventive worker care, general principles of good practice in primary and secondary WRR prevention and the necessary directions of changes in medical certification in the cases of occupational rhinitis.
