A Relationship of Trust: Are State ?School Trust Lands? Being Prudently Managed for the Beneficiary?
Every state entering the Union in the United States since 1803 received land grants from the federal government for the support of their public schools. Inherent in this federal grant is the fiduciary duty to prudently and effectively manage trust assets for the beneficiary, their school systems. This paper addresses the question of whether managers of trust lands are meeting their fiduciary responsibilities of ??maximum economic benefit?? for their beneficiaries. Realized market value-based economic returns from grazing lease revenues and capital appreciation for all twenty-three counties in Wyoming are compared with returns that may have been generated from alternative investment policy alternatives. Market values and capital appreciation for school trust lands in Wyoming are estimated from hedonic models formulated from ranch sales data and grazing revenue data.
A millimeter-wave kinetic inductance detector camera for long-range imaging through optical obscurants
Millimeter-wave imaging provides a promising option for long-range target detection through optical obscurants such as fog, which often occur in marine environments. Given this motivation, we are currently developing a 150 GHz polarization-sensitive imager using a relatively new type of superconducting pair-breaking detector, the kinetic inductance detector (KID). This imager will be paired with a 1.5 m telescope to obtain an angular resolution of 0.09° over a 3.5° field of view using 3,840 KIDs. We have fully characterized a prototype KID array, which shows excellent performance with noise strongly limited by the irreducible fluctuations from the ambient temperature background. Full-scale KID arrays are now being fabricated and characterized for a planned demonstration in a maritime environment later this year
Forming Financial Vision: How Parents Prepare Young Adults for Financial Success
The current study used a multi-generational and qualitative approach to examine perceptions of what parents/grandparents taught their children/grandchildren about finances. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 98 participants consisting of 77 college students, 13 parents and eight grandparents. Team-based qualitative analyses of these interviews revealed three consistent themes: (1) the importance of setting financial goals, (2) planning and acting to meet financial goals, and (3) understanding the time value of money. About 70% of participants mentioned at least one of the three main themes in their interviews. In general, parents and grandparents held regret for not providing financial lessons earlier in life, while students demonstrated gratitude for helpful conversations and good examples from parents. Implications are discussed for practitioners, educators, and parents

Pediatric Facial Fractures: A Multi-Institutional Level 1 Trauma Center Analysis of Incidence, Interventions, and Outcomes
Study Design: Retrospective chart review. Objective: The management of pediatric facial fractures presents distinctive considerations compared to adults. This study aims to provide a unique perspective on the correlations between the mechanism of injury, types of facial fractures, and fracture interventions and management utilized in 2 North Carolina Level 1 Trauma Centers to determine the optimal management options for this patient population. Methods: An IRB-approved retrospective chart review was performed of pediatric facial trauma patients ages <18 years old between January 2020 and December 2022 at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Atrium Health Charlotte Medical Center. Data on patient demographics, mechanism of injury, facial fractures, interventions, and outcomes were collected. Results: Of 2977 pediatric facial trauma patients, 582 patients sustained at least 1 facial fracture at the time of injury. Adolescents were significantly less likely to be transferred from outside institutions and to be admitted for further care (p = 0.002). Adolescents experienced higher levels of residual symptoms following initial discharge (p = 0.001) and were less likely to have a symptom resolution within 1 year (p < 0.0001). Neonates and infants were significantly more likely to receive conservative interventions and to sustain calvarium and skull base fractures (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: This study identifies differences in pediatric age groups related to transfers, admittance, fracture type, management, and outcomes. Our data suggests adolescent patients may experience a higher incidence of residual symptoms with lower levels of symptom resolution within 1 year. Further investigation into these differences may elicit optimized methods of fracture management in pediatric age groups and allow for effective, individualized care with improved long-term outcomes
Relational and Sexual Costs of Materialism in Couple Relationships: An Actor–Partner Longitudinal Study
This study examined the relational and sexual costs of materialism in couple relationships. Path analyses utilizing an actor–partner interdependence model (APIM) based on social comparison theory longitudinally predicted relationships across three waves of data over two years. Respondents included 338 couples (married and cohabiting) who participated in three waves of the (Day et al. 2016) Project. Women’s goods materialism at Time 2 was also directly related to their own (positively) and their partner’s (negatively) sexual satisfaction at Time 3. Men’s image materialism at Time 2 was directly and negatively related to their own commitment at Time 2 and their goods materialism at Time 2 was directly and negatively related to their own Time 2 relationship satisfaction. We also identified negative indirect associations between men’s T2 image and goods materialism and men’s and women’s T3 relationship satisfaction. This study provided evidence of the concurrent and longitudinal associations of materialism and relationship and sexual satisfaction using dyadic data. Implications for family life educators and therapists are explored

The formal and informal support networks of HCBS clients and their well-being
Click on the URL link to access the abstract at the publisher's website.Home and Community Based Service (HCBS) clients are growing in number as states increasingly provide care in non-institutional settings. In some states, like the one in which the present study was conducted, HCBS clients can choose to hire family members, friends or unfamiliar agency workers as paid caregivers of interest was HCBS clients’ choice of paid caregivers and how their choices were related to the social networks in which they were embedded, their well-being and loneliness
