Parametric Study of Alternative EV1 Powertrains

    Get PDF
The General Motors (GM) EV1 is an electric vehicle originally powered by either a PbA or NiMh battery pack. This paper examines the possibility of alternative powertrain configurations. These alternatives include an ultracapacitor (UC) storage system, fuel cell system with UC storage, and a fuel cell system with a NiMh battery pack. The configurations were simulated using ADVISOR. Parametric tests were performed by varying the size of the energy storage systems. The study of these combinations is followed by an examination of the current art of the hybrid energy storage topologies used to combine battery and ultracapacitor storage. These topologies include passive parallel, active parallel, cascade parallel, and multi-input bidirectional converter

Determinants of field tax auditors' productivity: a case of inland revenue board of Malaysia Klang Valley tax auditors

The significant variation of productivity among field tax auditors of company taxpayers (FTACs) can be reduced by deploying the most productive officer to the field audit for the company; whereby indirectly the audit coverage can be enhanced. Accordingly, higher audit coverage is expected to enhance tax compliance. Presently, the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM) has not yet implemented a systematic method in deploying officers to the field tax audit unit throughout Malaysia. Hence, the result can also be used as a reference in designing future human development programmes in the IRBM. This research examines the determinants of the productivity of FTAC in the IRBM. Several variables were identified and broadly classified into human capital talents, demographic characteristics, religiosity, motivation, job satisfaction and happiness. Data were analyzed via the Multiple Regression analysis which were initially sourced from a survey. The total population for the study was 457 FTACs in Malaysia. A sample of 176 respondents was selected via purposive sampling techniques among FTACs who were serving in all IRBM’s branches within Klang Valley. The research findings revealed that job satisfaction positively affects FTAC’s productivity, while age is an important determinant as older FTACs tend to be less productive. FTACs with science and applied science backgrounds, and those who have served longer in IRBM tend to be less productive. However, field auditors who have more than six years of auditing experience in the current job assignment are more productive. The findings provide enlightenment on the vital determinants of the FTACs that can be used as the basis for conducting further research. Besides, more attention to the question of why some variables are not significant to the productivity of FTACs can be put forth

Integrated Blade Inspection System (IBIS) Upgrade Study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this design study was to identify ways to improve the Integrated Blade Inspection System. The Air Force requires inspection of jet engine compressor and turbine blades to locate defects and prevent engine failure. The current inspection process uses fluorescent penetrant as an aid to identify cracked blades. A systems engineering design process was applied to evaluate the current inspection techniques and to develop alternative methods to satisfy the Air Force requirements. Three different inspection systems were developed and compared to the current process: manual, semi-automated, and fully automated inspection. This study made several noteworthy contributions: development of classification software to validate the neural network approach for accurate blade classification, demonstration of potential advantages of charge-coupled device cameras for data gathering, quantification of the cost of incorrectly classifying jet engine blades, examination of the value of a statistical quality control plan for the inspection process, and identification of a method using multiple images to extract additional features from cracks. The study demonstrates that the fully automated system could dramatically outperform the manual inspection process by improving the consistency of the inspection process and raising the quality of the blades returned to service
